RESTORING OUR SCHOOL DOORS - Start to Finish Transformation
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
It took me 5 months to strip and restore all the doors from the school we are turning into our house... keep watching to see how I did it!
When we first bought this school, I knew I wanted to save ALL these doors. Problem was, they were ROUGH … and covered in paint, old varnish, and dog scratches, and tons of nails. I used pretty much every tool and product I could find, there is no magic bullet or easy way to refinish old furniture and doors. But after finishing 23 of these enormous doors, I definitely have some tips for efficiency and repair.
Anyways, thank you to everyone for watching! If you have any questions, comment them below and I'll get back to you :)

Below are all of the items I used to finish this project. As a disclaimer, some of the links above may be affiliate links. Things you buy through some links may earn a small commission that will go straight into fixing up the schoolhouse!
•Smart Strip (For things with many layers of paint) amzn.to/466wSw8
•Citristrip, Kwikstrip, Klean Strip- anything from hardware store for varnish, not paint
•Wide razor scraper amzn.to/3szOsuH
•Corner and trim scraper amzn.to/46b8zwY
•Pressure washer amzn.to/3SBElQE
•Lead testing strips amzn.to/49Cw19y
•Festool sander with rectangle orbital, regular orbital, and Rotex attachments, but super pricey. (A mouse sander, + an orbital sander are also fine) amzn.to/3FWIzuD
•Sand o Flex, recommend this with a corded drill. amzn.to/47rz4PR
•Surf prep attachment for the Festool surfprepsanding.com/
•Plastic Wood wood filler amzn.to/3SHyuJM

•Titebond wood glue amzn.to/3QWbANq
•Irwin clamps amzn.to/3SI6Zji
•Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner amzn.to/468qZhW
•Minwax stain color of your choice (PS- your local Sherwin Williams store usually has better deals on these products vs online)
•Sher-Wood Moisture Resistant Lacquer in Medium Rubbed effect
•Apollo Sprayer and gun (We have the Apollo 800, which I’ve seen on Ebay for ~$500) amzn.to/3QWyDYu

"Yard by yard life is hard. Inch by inch it's a cinch." One door at a time and you crossed the finish line. You are amazing.

@@Schoolhousehomestead Yes you should! I put myself through college in my forties, while working and raising a family. I had that written on my notebook and just tried to get through each day.
Probably my favorite restoration project on youtube right now. Just fantastic watching it all happen.

Thank you so much!!
Just think of all the kids, teachers, parents, grandparents, custodians and so many others that have touched the doors that you just refinished. What a beautiful project! And yeah DAD!
I'm not from the Midwest, but I've dealt with a bunch of Midwesterners and you are surely among the very best of the ilk. You're good people!
Seeing these old doors in the original version brought back memories of my high school days!!! ❣️😍
Gorgeous!!!! There's nothing like real wood. To me, it is God's canvas.
God bless the dads who were present in their daughter's life. Who passed down information and visuals on how to do things. They didn't just leave it all up to mom because you're a girl.
It was a lot of work. I admire your grit (pun intended) and determination to see it through.
I love it that you stripped all those doors and stained them. They turned out beautiful.
You and your wife are amazing. Families are everything. You are blessed. Can't wait till you get everything done. Wi Love seeing it
Absolutely beautiful!! I have a deep appreciation for people like yourself that love history and want to restore it and preserve it!! What an amazing journey your family is on!!
The doors are wonderful! It's terrific how you took dented and battered wood doors, cleaned, stripped, sanded, stained, brought out the beautiful grain and honored the age and service of these doors.
Where's the "LOVE IT" button. Your awesome!!!
Beautiful job on the doors. I love old doors. We refinished the doors in our 100 year old farmhouse. I love the way they turned out with all the little imperfections still present. As a young girl attending school, the school house was similar to yours, in a small town I often wished it could be my house. How wonderful you are able to make your dream come true for you and your family.
What a dream!!!! The rendering at the end is breath taking!!!!
Great job. Love the doors looking natural.
Not only did the door turn out beautifully but it saved some money too.
The old doors are turning out amazing, and those old pieces of hardware are very cool!
Magnificent!! Proud of you for your willingness to restore a bit of history. I love that. ❤ I'm all in for this project.
Wow! What an enormous job but oh my those doors are gorgeous! You'll enjoy that hard work for the rest of your life! Beautiful
So happy to see you brought the doors back to the wood, beautiful ❤️ well done
Stacy those look great, glad you where able to aquire the needed extra doors. Lots of love going into those.
Wow the doors are practically glowing 😂🎉
I love that you're harvesting things from old schools. I had a joyous little moment last week where i was in one old school one day and another the next day.
Good on you, girl. Prep work, repairs, sanding, conditioning and access to your dad's tools out in the barn ended up a treat!❤🎉🎉🎉😊

LOVE the chalkboard doors. Thank you for sharing this amazing project with us.
Stripping is no fun, for sure!! You did a great job!! Your line...they look as good as they're going to for old doors is true. They will never not be beat up and damaged from the years of school and other use they've experienced, but holy cow, they sure look amazing despite that. Even better, you saved them and brought them back to life as best you could, which will forever be a zillion times better then any door you'd find today to take their place. This is going to be such an incredible house!!

I have no words😮 STUNNING! incredible work! 😅 so satisfying to watch.
Oh so wonderful to see a young family seeing the beauty and potential in such a building of my youngsters years! And appreciate the quick, efficient, but informant (got some tips; have ‘tested sone if Dumond stripping products but learned more + here) The doors are “beauties!”
Wow!!! So beautiful. You did a fantastic job on those old doors.
Wow, what an accomplishment. You should be proud!
The doors look great. 👍
What warmth those beautiful doors will bring to that huge building 🤗
I've refinished many of the doors in my 1925 bungalow-- learned how on my own, & you can see how I got better at it from door to door! I loved watching this, thank you so much for posting. I bet they'll look beautiful with all the old paint colors and in a home furnished for the 2020's. Maybe you've already answered this question but how do the townspeople feel about you turning the old school into a house? I guess no one who'd care is left to protest - the schoolchildren and the cows, pigs, etc., all in a better place!

Well the person we bought it from, her mom was a student! But the school closed in 1936 so no one is left who went there. There hasn't been any controversy to my knowledge, mostly we hear that folks are excited it wasn't torn down! Also our neighbors are my former 4H leaders so that's fun too. :)
These finished doors are absolutely beautiful!
Congratulations. Thanks for the new video. Greetings from Budapest, Hungary. Thank you for restoring the old school.

I love it! So excited for you. I lived in Shelby County and am amazed the school was still standing. It was in really bad shape when I moved away 10 yrs ago. I knew when I came across your channel that it was the school on SR44. Franklin is a great town and loved going antiquing there. I live in TX now but I am still homesick for Indiana! No place like home.
Awesome Looking work yal are doing!!! So satisfying to see new life breathed into the ole things that are still around!!!! Thank you for All of yals hard work!!!!

I wondered about the lead. Amazing!!
Do you only have to worry about the most recent paint layers for lead, or all of them? And your dad is a genius with that idea!
Love this thank you!

My husband and I remodeled my 110 year old house in Logansport, Indiana so we could put it on the market. So, I can definitely sympathize with the amount of work your school house is! It was a much smaller project than yours, but similar work...so, kudos to you for all your labor on those doors! They look amazing!
Beautiful doors!!
Love love the doors!!❤
WOW! What more can I say. This is just going to be so stunning! I can hardly wait to see the end result when you get to move in!!!

WOW!!! This was exactly what I was looking for! I am about to start a very similar project and your video is the best out there on the subject and Ive watched most if not all of them! I do have some repairs to make in my solid wood doors. I've been concerned about those repairs standing out. You used just standard filler and then used the "crayon" to blend. Nice! I was considering abatron and that can be tinted but its so expensive.
Keep inspiring
