Restoring Knee Extension Range of Motion After ACL Surgery

#311: Restoring full knee extension after ACL reconstruction surgery is one of the most important goals in the early phase of rehabilitation.
In this podcast episode, we talk about why people sometimes lose extension range of motion, and some of our tips on what to do when this occurs.

It's been 3 months since ACL and meniscus surgery. pain and soreness are still there when walking. I also have a big trauma that is a little difficult to get rid of.

Week five and I’m only two or three degrees left. I just get worried to get the last degrees for hypertension.

I’m 4 wks post op. Still really struggling with pain and guarding. I know logically that bending and extending won’t cause any further damage but the pain is stopping me in my tracks. It’s so discouraging

After my ACL reconstruction on my right knee, it is does not hyperextend anymore. However I do have full quad activation. But imbalanced with right and left. Its not constantly on my mind and I just stagger my squat stance and it works out.

I’m week 10 still a few degrees to go to a full extension. Often need a few minutes push in PT session to get 0 degree. Is it too late to get full extension or hypertension? (If I try harder)

I’m 3 weeks out of surgery (left knee). My right will hyper extend all the way to -10. I can only get my left to -4 or -5 ish. And when I’m standing only -1 or -2. Is it too late to get the full -10 degrees of hyper extension back?

heyy nice video i am 4 months post btb graft aclr and lateral and medial meniscus repair surgery. i have full range of motion and great quad and hamstring strength. however my hyperextension in surgical knee is pretty painful at the anterior part of the knee. it is posiible but painful. when i am at the rehab place i warm up a bit and hyperextend my knee initially with some pain but then it gets better and i can do all exercises painfree. but when i get back home or sit with the knee flexed for a long time it again becomes painful to hyperextend. hence i am walking with slight hinge in the knee. what would your suggestions be to reduce this pain

Have the same case, but was a hamstring allograft ACLR, Medial Meniscus Transplantation, and Anterolateral Ligament Reconstruction to support the ACL reconstruction. I have the same thing I am 8 weeks post-op and currently have 125 degrees flexion 0 degrees extension, I am able to walk when the knee is warmed up, but when sitting for more than 30 minutes I have to stretch the knee and use 1 crutch to support my weight until the knee gets warmed up to be able to walk without pain again. I believe that is something normal and it is going to decrease once we get more strength in the quads and hamstrings.

@@hiramvasquezjr9469 yeah bro. now my pain is almost gone. just bear the pain and achieve full extension as frequently as possible and strengthen quads and rest of the muscles. it may take 6 months to a year but it will eventually go. all the best for u

Im 4 months post op on hamstring graft acl replacement and i havent gotten back full flexion. It took me 9 weeks to get to 90 degrees flexionand then i was gaining about an inch a week for the past 2 months. I had about 6 to 8 inches of flexion left to gain last monday. Someone pushed on my leg relatively hard while i was prone and flexed. I felt a bad sharp pain and now i have lost flexion. My leg feels more unstable and gives out on me randomly when im walking now. It hurts at full extention now and clicks and pops alot. Its been almost a week now and the swelling has gone down but still hurts and feels loose. Most of the pain is in the rear of my knee. Do you think the graft could have been damaged or stretched? Or do i have nothing to worry about?
