Anterior Knee Pain After ACL Reconstruction

#310: Anterior knee pain is one of the more common complications following ACL reconstruction surgery, especially if using a patellar tendon graft.
There are many reasons why this may occur, but by keeping this in mind from the beginning, we hope to minimize this from occuring.
Here's what we do.

I tore both ACLs, and the surgeon manipulated me into a pettla graft for my first tear on my right knee. That graft is two years old and used titanium screws. That knee hurts when walking. Unbearable when jumping and very uncomfortable running. All the pain is in the pettla itself. I went to a different surgeon to see what can be done because I lost trust in that first surgeon and his hole company. The new surgeon repaired the other with a quad graft and was way less painful. That graft is 6 months old and feels 3 times better. I am very depressed because my right knee caused me to retire from the sport I loved which was football. The new surgeon said this pain is permanent, and nothing can be done without causing more problems. I am trying to get back into powerlifting. Squats are uncomfortable but doable. But I have to move because I have a slow metabolism and I will get severely fat if I don't move and sometimes I refuse to eat on days I can't move to well. Not sure what to do anymore.

Don’t worry bro, I’ve ruptured the same acl twice. I’ve played around 7 matches in 4 years, I’ve had the hamstring and now the patella. I know it looks bleak right now. But let’s be grateful of our lives. Things will get better I promise, I believe in you🙏🏾

@Ramboosta123 I was told I can never compete in a contact sport or run ever again unless I want a knee replacement at 35 years old. There is nothing to be grateful for what I loved was taken from me. At this point in my life I am learning to enjoy the pain because that's all I feel in my knees anymore. It is constant reminder of how much of a fool I was.

@@bronsonleach3573 I believe in you bro. Ronaldo was told he’d never walk again after the worst knee injury ever seen, Ric Flair was told he’d never wrestle again after a plane crash, Steven Hawking was told he wouldn’t live past 19. There’s hope yet. I’ve torn my ACL twice in the same knee. I’m back to playing football now at semi professional level, albeit a little more cautiously. There’s always hope. A doctor is there to prevent future work for themselves, however they aren’t the ones doing the work with you. So just don’t give up hope🙏🙌❤️

@@Ramboosta123 This is actually coming from a surgeon that had my best interests for once. He operated on me fully awake in the first time of his career which is 20 years. I can't have general anesthesia. He did a very good job on my left and that knee feels normal. However my right was done by a different surgeon before him who was not as skilled. That surgeon took to much of my pettla tendon and it didn't heal right. Running with a comprised pettla tendon is stupidly painful and it is not repairable.

Yesterday marks 6 months post op. Surgery was in May, injury was in March. Prior to injury I was planning to run a marathon this year, was training and regularly running 10 miles a week. Now post surgery feeling better, ran a 10k two weeks ago. And was back to running at the 3 month mark but I am getting consistent pain in extension. I have been following through with my stretches given to me by my PT, and have been recently including strength training to strengthen the hamstring and quads again as I had a hamstring tendon autograph. Noticing some swelling and I think I should find a new sport for a little while. Something like swimming that is a lot kinder on the joints. I am only 19 and seeing the statistics am worried if I continue at this rate I will develop osteoarthritis at 30. 😐 I am now realizing my knee will never be the same

I'm 1.5 yrs and still have pain going down stairs. It's a process and different for everyone, I was running by 2mo, and have been doing about 3-4 days of exercise a week since (whether it's PT, home fitness, running, etc). Now im back to playing light soccer. It's slower for me but i can still see progress, still need slightly better hamstring strength imo (ham autograft), but don't get discouraged just keep working all parts of the leg and you'll see improvements!

I had my surgery on 13th March, 24. I'm able to walk now, but my patella gets stuck when I'm walking. I'm not able to bend by knee while walking. However, if I'm sitting or lying on bed, I have no problem in bending my knee. Did anyone ever experience this? Any tips or advice? Thanks

I am 5 weeks out. I am struggling so much. The pain is crazy. I have pain in the back of my knee and the top of my calf. 4 weeks out the top of my calf bruised. It bothers me. I'm told it's normal. I can straighten my leg and I can lift it. But it's still buckels. They tell me if I can do all this stuff it shouldn't. Errrr! Pt is so painful . After my knee just screams. I am so frustrated with this. 15 years ago I tore my other one. I remember it hurting but not like this. I did have some pain for awhile. I don't remember exactly how long but at some point my knee was as normal as it ever was.
