Restoring a Vintage Mackie CR-1604 Mixer (Part 1 of 3)

Музыка

In this three part series I teardown, fix, and service an early 90s Mackie CR-1604. Learn more about these mixers, early 90s electronics, and service. These mixers are common and can often be purchased very inexpensively but were well designed and had great specs for the era. I paid $75 for the mixer featured in this video plus $50 more for second one that I used for parts.
Mixer videos have been the most viewed episodes on this channel. I thought it would be fun to get away from the screen a few days and work on some vintage hardware. Don't worry, I will have more software tutorials on the channel again soon.

I managed to score one of these mixers off of facebook marketplace for 60 bucks, and by some miracle not a single pot or fader was scratchy, and nothing was broken except the solo to main button. Apparently it was the front of house mixer at a church for many years, so these days i joke that my 909s are being saturated by the holy spirit haha. Its nice to see you bringing a classic mixer back to life, these are such a nice mixer for the money and they fit into a modern workflow really well as a routing matrix for analog gear and fx.

Nice, my son found one on the side of the road back in 2014 fully functional… it is in storage right now but would love to give it a nice clean. Made a lot of great music with it.

Was gonna follow this for tearing down the one I got to clean it out, but then I found out about electrical cleaner. Since nothing is actually broken on mine, I don't have to open it (kinda disappointing but no chance to break it then), can just use the cleaner right through the cracks, worked like magic. Cool video though, I like to see people who cover much more niche subjects like this.

Great video! So happy to see people rehabilitating old gear. I just managed to grab one of these before it was thrown away. I've turned it on and it shows full lights with a blinking solo level light. Nothing but a buzz is coming out of the audio outputs. Any idea where to start on trouble shooting? I'm assuming it's something to do with the power supply.

great videos thanks. i've got a great working unit with all the options but the OL and Level lights just stopped working while i'm testing. wondering if i flipped a switch i can't find now or if the PS crapped out for the LEDs....

Hello, can the 110v power be changed to 220v Europe on the mains via a switch or change the fuse? Or is the only option a step-up converter? Thank you

picked one of these up and noticed the left main channel LED meter doesn't pick up a signal unless the input channel solo button is pushed..the sound seems to only be slightly quieter on the left but for some reason the LED meter doesn't show it, left and right main faders are placed in the same spot, and it happens on every line input balanced channel i've tried. any ideas?

hi ! i want to restore mine. Before i tear it down i want to spare some parts i obviously need . Do you know the exact part no / info to check all the specification values of the faders and knobs ? do you recommend opening it an d check it myself to be more sure ? it’s just spare parts take some time to arrive with import and stuff , so maybe it wouldn’t be wise to tear it apart if it is messy to put it back together . faders look far away from the starting point . thanks ! i love the thing , it was expensive so i got one to give back life to. cheers !

May be a stupid question, but is it possible to mod these with longer ribbon cables and have the pod in a rack and only the "fader box" on the desk? Less cables going up and down and smaller footprint on the desk :)

I suppose the might work to some extent, however the design is based on those connections being very short. Thanks for watching.
