Restoring a 100 year old machine to make candy for the first time in a century!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
For the 30th anniversary of Lofty Pursuits, we are making some special candy for a loot box. This one required us to restore a 100 year old piece of equipment. One that was never used much, and that probably has not been used for a century. We thought this would be a special way to celebrate our anniversary.
Get on our e-mail list at www.pd.net to find out when the loot box will be available for purchase.

Not only a candy maker, but a machinist too! I love these videos. Just as satisfying as watching you make candy.
What is better than watching a candymaker, making candy? Watching a candymaker doing "machinist" stuff! And, doing a good job of it. Thanks, GReg! steve
I was watching the lovely restoration and saw the broken screw and was like "oh that's neat he can pull out a replacement" but my jaw DROPPED when I realized he was going to make it from SCRATCH, hats off to you and your amazing skill not only as a candy maker and store runner but as a mechanical genius! it always warms my heart to see vintage restorations, knowing that these old machines have so much history and love put into them and are still making people smile is incredible to see! stay safe out there, I hope the hurricane passes with no damages 😊

I think you'd enjoy restoration channels! My Mechanics is one that comes to mind as someone who makes parts from scratch (they even have "I make a new one" merch!)
This was fascinating. I didn’t know you went to these lengths to restore these old machines.

Greg congrats on 30 years! Also this video was mesmerizing. Great hands in the shop as well as making candy. It would be great if you had another channel just based on your repair and reclamation of old candy making machines. Im sure many would love to see it.
Machining, restoring, history and candy making. This is by far the best thing I've seen in my life. You are a jack of all trades. Keep up the great work!
I was shocked at this video. I knew you were good at making candy, Greg, but I had no idea you were such a deft hand at restoration and fabrication! To see you working a lathe and a mill like an old hand machinist brought a smile to my face. And using the old vinegar and flour trick to take the patina off the nuts and rollers as well. The cherry on top was you making blackcurrant candy. My number one favorite candy flavor.
Watching the transformation of the new machine was nothing short than magical! Thanks for sharing and allowing we the fans to order the triangular shaped candy and the anniversary boxes
Congratulations! About the candy roller: I strongly suspect that the machine was designed to work exactly the same way all of the other ones do, by sucking in a warm blob of candy then shaping and cooling it at the same time. I think that by shaping the candy, you might be being too helpful. And by the look of it, you're either going to have to roll very short sticks, or both shapes at the same time.
Every time I watch a video I can always tell how much you love and the dedication you have towards your job! Makes me appreciate the candies all the more seeing how much effort goes into making them. Congratulations on the 30th anniversary

@@LoftyPursuits good to hear 👍🏼
I remember when Lofty Pursuits opened in '93. It has been a staple in my life since I was a kid. I have purchased yo-yo's, disc golf discs, candy, ice cream, and now it is traditional to purchase a new tabletop game for my wife every Christmas. The weekend before Christmas each year I now go in and have one of the best breakfasts in town and buy the last Christmas gift of the year. Greg , thank you for 30 years of being something I can look forward to, and something my children can now enjoy!
there's seriously nothing i love more than watching people working passionately in their craft. it really gets the inspiration flowing! thanks for sharing
Congrats on 30 years 🎉🎉
Love the video man. Thread cutting fluid is your best friend and I think you probably could have ordered that if you'd wanted. None the less mad respect for making it.
Every time you release a new one of these videos I think it’s my new favorite. You manage to exceed the wildest imagination for a candy shop.
It has been a sweet week for old machinery: Keith Rucker at Vintage Machinery has been restoring a cane press (to extract the juice from sugar cane.) It is a one mule power unit. You have restored an antique candy extruder. Sweet!
I impressed that y'all restore everything yourself instead of outsourcing. I love people who are capable of different things instead of focusing on specializing on one specific thing. I'm a wildlife educator, but I'm also a maker among other unrelated hobbies. I love restoration videos of old equipment. My favorite channels being My Mechanics and Hand Tool Rescue.
I happened to come across this by accident. This is amazing. Being able to see different types of candy that hasn’t been made in along time is cool.
Happy Anniversary🎉🍭 Did you all make it through the hurricane okay?
There's almost nothing more fascinating than watching someone who's truly passionate about their work share that passion, whether in person, in a video, or otherwise. The sincerity and joy just shines right through. Thanks for sharing with us!
Writing your name on your glove is such a great idea. All you have to do is look down at your hand to know who you are. That's brilliant. Now I will always know. Great video, my friend. The candy looks great. I know, I know, gloves can get gross. It's nice if everyone has their own pair.
You are such an amazing renaissance man! I have been following many wood turners and resin turners on YT, but this is the first machinist video I have seen. I admire your workshop with all the wonderful tools in there to make tools.
Ooooh a restoration and candy making video all in one! Double satisfaction!
MORE MACHINING CONTENT PLEASE!~ I love your candy work, but honestly the appeal of the channel is seeing your passion and expertise shine. I enjoyed this JUST as much as I enjoy all your candy work. Also, on the side note machining and restoration content always does well on KZread. Especially when it's done by a person who has passion, and double goes for "minimal touches to keep original design". The sounds were actually really great, and the time lapse was perfect to see. If you're going to be in the shop anyways working on these, might as well make a video. You'll then be technically paid for the work you would do anyways, and we get amazing content from you that we'd love to support. Been subbed for years and will do for more!
Machining content is the last thing i expected to come out of lofty pursuits' channel 😂
I find it fascinating to watch these videos where you restore old machinery. It's truly amazing to see these antique machines come back to life. I can't wait to see the candy-making videos that will be possible once these machines are fully restored.
I never would have guessed that you are also a machinist! So cool!
You Sir are a renaissance man. Your daughter is right about unboxing but also restoring beautiful old things to reuse is a gift. You are very gifted. Cheers from the pacific northwest. Canada side.
this was interesting. hope to see more of those renovation videos in the future. Happy 30th anniversary to all the team at Lofty Pursuits
I hope you keep using this machine, it was made to be used, and it's good to see it working.
didn't expect this channel to be posting a machining and restoration video, but i DEFINITELY wasn't expecting to also learn that greg was an understudy to the world's most interesting man
Been watching for years, ever since I was a kid, I'm 22 now and finally placed an order for some candy with you guys the other day!!! Can't wait to receive it!!
How exciting - congratulations on thirty years!
I think one of the most fascinating parts of this video is seeing you struggle to get the triangle stick rollers to work. So often even the apprentices are skilled enough that the rollers look easy, blob goes in, drops come out. Seeing you learning is cool!

There weren't a lot of these made, and it's a vclad and sons machine. Two clear signs that this machine might not work well :-) I knew this coming in that there might be a problem
Every machine shop class in the country should watch this. What a restoration!
I am so glad that this is yet another machine that won't end up in the trash pile. What a unique candy! I would love the loot box! Can't wait to get it! This video is super cool. Always nice when you can restore the machines yourself. Need to put a small AC unit or something in that warehouse though! We don't want you getting heat stroke!!! My hubby from the trailer shop says hello! :) Congrats on 30 years!
Fascinating video, and congratulations on the anniversary, hears to 30 years more of lofty pursuits
I never thought about the work that goes into restoring all the old equipment! Only makes sense that as good as you are at making candy, you oughta be better at making the stuff that makes the candy
I love this channel and just watching candy making really satiates the feeling of being a part of something being made I love being hands on I’ve taken machine shop courses and recently learned to MIG weld Seeing the machining for the restoration of this new-to-you apparatus was amazing!
I love seeing you bring these old devices back to life. I hope you can find more machines like this!
Congrats for 30 years! Thank for sharing your joy with us!
I love that you respect and use these old machines. Pretty much everything I own is vintage.
I am thoroughly impressed that you did all the machining work on this, awesome work!
I love restoration videos! Glad to see you upload this one!

That is amazing Greg, its so wonderful seeing you restore the machine then the candy. ❤
To lofty pursuits congratulations on your 30th anniversary and thank you for the great video of the restoration of this beautiful antique candy machine and thank you for the delicious type of candy that you showed how to make you keep up the good work keep on doing your job I know your website I will actually order some sugar-free candy if you have it, take care from one of your viewers
Gregg your machine work is impressive!
I enjoy your podcast, partly because you talk about your workshop and what you make. It’s great to see a video of both candy making and the restoration of a new machine. I hope you do more of these.
Greg! This was great. I love watching makers make things, which is why I’m already here, but I would love to see you do more repairs and restorations like this! If you have any in the future and have time to film them please send them our way! And maybe with a voice over of what you’re doing? It’s fascinating!
I have never seen your hands so dirty and I am so incredibly impressed by your machinist skills. You've acquired such an awesome set of linked skills it's amazing! The new parts look fantastic and the cleaned parts are gorgeous! Way to go!
I love seeing people revive ancient machines. This almost reminds me of those folks reviving an Apollo Guidance Computer here on youtube somewhere.

WHAT! this dude just totally changed my opinion of him. I thought the candy making roleplay and costume stuff is a bit weird but the skills to machine parts. Respect.
I have been watching a lot of videos where they are literally using baking soda in a gravity flow sand blaster. The results are impressive and requires so much less effort and time to remove paint and rust scale. It could prove useful in the future for your resto projects and as it is baking soda, it is food friendly and just mildly abrasive perhaps less do that the wire brush and definitely the file. Loved the resto video and watching the candy making.

If he started Lofty Pursuits at 25, that's plenty old enough to have taken a few community college machine shop courses- assuming he didn't do those back in high school, since he's old enough to have attended *before* schools stopped offering shop class.

When restoring old honey processing equipment to make it food safe I usually use citric acid as my main agent for removing rust/tarnish followed by epoxies and food safe paint to give me a food safe shell. Citric acid can often remove the zinc from galvanized metal before I move on to the epoxy and paint layers.
I just found this, looks so good. I was disappointed your loot boxes are sold out but not surprising. Great video, love when older machines get love and that this one is a candy machine, even better. 🙂

Wow. Just wow. I’m on the Treasure Coast, a few hours away from you. If I’m ever up there, I want to make it a point to stop by. This was an incredible video, both for the restoration and he production of old-time candy. Thank you sir!

Congratulations on 30 years!🎉
This was so cool watching the restoration!
It was cool to see the staff finding strategies to make the machine work a little better. The people who first used it probably did the same thing, but their knowledge is lost to antiquity. Really cool to see it be recreated. 👍😊
You guys and gals are amazing!
