Restored 2001 VHS: This Was Magic Kingdom Disney World A Month After 9/11

Restored 2001 VHS: This Was Magic Kingdom Disney World A Month After 9/11
Stepping into the Magic Kingdom just a month after the tragic events of 9/11 was an experience shrouded in a palpable mix of emotions. As families gathered and children laughed, there lingered an undeniable weight in the air-a collective awareness that the world had changed, and the wounds of that September morning were still raw.
As visitors strolled down Main Street, U.S.A., the usual jubilant atmosphere seemed tempered by a sombre undercurrent. American flags waved proudly, but their presence carried a solemn significance, serving as a reminder of the unity and resilience that emerged in the wake of tragedy.
The iconic Cinderella Castle, usually a beacon of enchantment and joy, now stood as a symbol of strength amidst adversity. Its towering spires seemed to reach for the sky with a quiet determination, echoing the resolve of a nation grappling with loss and uncertainty.
Even the familiar melodies that filled the park held a different resonance. The cheerful tunes of Disney classics provided a momentary escape from reality, yet beneath the surface, there was an awareness that the world outside this magical realm was forever changed.
In line for attractions like Space Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean, conversations inevitably turned to the events of 9/11. Strangers bonded over shared experiences and stories of loved ones affected by the tragedy. The lines between fantasy and reality blurred as the park became a sanctuary for healing and reflection.
Yet, amidst the lingering sorrow, there were glimpses of hope and resilience. Families hugged a little tighter, strangers offered words of kindness, and the spirit of unity that emerged in the aftermath of 9/11 was alive and well within the park's walls.
Leaving the Magic Kingdom that day, visitors carried with them not only memories of laughter and joy but also a profound sense of solidarity. In a world still reeling from tragedy, the magic of Disney offered a glimmer of light-a reminder that even in the darkest of times, hope and togetherness endure.

I miss this era of Disney. When you could just go thru the parks and explore and not have to manage every damn minute through an app on a smart phone.

The reliance on your phone has ruined disney. They need to let you get your fast passes and line skips without using a phone. I get they want to track guests, but just use those rfid tags and not require a phone.

Which is why I prefer the Universal Experience now. Although, I’m sure they’ll screw it up when Epic Universe opens. It’s not great when the theme park I’d most like to visit now are back to 1 990s wdw.

I always say, when people say you need to be on your phone throughout the entire day, just needs to learn to finesse the app much better. Sure, it would be better without a phone, but the app take literally 10 minutes max out of your day if you work it right.

That was exactly my impression, too. And my last WDW visit is almost 9 years ago now. I used to visit often when i was younger (experienced early 90s Epcot and "MGM" & Animal Kingdom from since when they opened) .. i'm a Disney Parks addict. But that last trip really put me off WDW in particular. I've actually learned to appreciate the non-Disney european theme parks, cause when i go to a park i want to chill and not be forced to organize every minute of my day..

The nostalgia I miss is the absence of the phone. People walking and acting like normal people. Now we are extensions of our phones, awkward, and annoying.

I was there on September 12th, 2001. There were more cast members than guests that day. It was like walking through a ghost town. Main Street was almost completely deserted. And obviously the impact of 9/11 was still very much unfolding, which made it feel strange and wrong to get on a ride at all. We had debated on going, but we had spent a lot of money already on the planned vacation so we ultimately went through with it. It truly was surreal.

We went to Disney world for the first time in October 2001. The pilot came out to speak to the passengers and security was crazy from uk to USA. Many service people wearing their NY uniforms. They were allowed in free of charge. So many people shaking them by the hand. Very moving

This is the inflection point for WDW. 9/11 and the tourist slump resulted in an almost endless wave of massive cutbacks in the park. Cuts that were never undone. It just got worse from here, took a while before it became really apparent though. To see this level of Disney quality you’ve to go to Tokyo now.

Seeing this back it's crazy how much more of a "dark ride" dark rides were back in the day. I've always thought that Pirates lighting has also heavily changed (beside Johnny Depp being added) and I can see in this video it has. It's hard to remember if you're right, or wrong in these situations when you're young seeing things for the first time. The biggest change in lightning in Pirates is the scene with the sword that goes through the skeleton. That part is so brightly lit right now you can see everything in that scene. I always felt the intense lightning was out of place and now I know why.

We booked a trip for the end of September that year. After 9/11 we debated cancelling the trip because we felt guilty considering the circumstances, and we were unsure of the flying situation because all flights were grounded indefinately at the time. Ultimately we decided to go because the terrorists WANTED us to cower in fear and Americans needed to send them a collective middle finger to show them they’ll never win. Even though they resumed flights in the days before our trip we decided to drive down to Florida instead of flying. When we got there the place was a ghost town and the mood was incredibly somber. While the lines were conveniently shorter than what we had experienced in past trips, that was a Disney visit we would rather erase from our memory.

I love Walt Disney World so much. I first went in 2011 when I was 19 years old. I was expecting somthing like Hershey Park my local theme park in Pa. And Holly Micky mouse it literally blew my mind. The scale of the resort itself All the places to stay all the different parks… at the time down town Disney. It just all blew my expectations. The rides were like nothing I expected. I been back 4 times since 2011 and havnt been able to afford to go recently. Man what a place. Being a 92 baby. I grew up with the Disney movie Renaissance so I always was a Disney fan. But WDW turned me into a Disney superfan😅

Very interesting as we were there from the UK around 3 weeks after 9/11. It was a bit surreal and both Disney and Universal were very quiet.
