    The copper in pressure treated wood will in fact leach into the carpet and cause issues with your aluminum boat. I got rid of the carpet and installed slick nylon slides over my boards. Carpet just holds water and causes the wood to rot quicker.

    Great job! Here is a secret tip you will like! The next time you do this get a sand blaster from Northern Tool or Harbor Freight and it will take the rust and oxidation off in 1/10 the time of a wire brush. I just did the same job you did. It took part of a day to get it all off. And it was easy

The entire trailer is rusted and I've been contemplating on whether to buy a better trailer or rebuild mine like you did in your video. I'm using your video to inspire me and point me to the right direction. Only difference will be that i plan on buying a new axle assembly ($150). But other than that, I'll be going your direction on this build. Thanks.

    Good job! Before you paint rusted steel, consider slathering it with Ospho, because rust has a nasty way of bubbling back up. Ospho converts ferric OXIDE to ferric PHOSPHATE. Works good on all those little pits you can't see, even though you did all that work with your grinder beforehand..

I bought a jon boat and trailer cheap because it was in sorry shape. I did exactly what you did on that trailer and just finished up today. Now onto the boat! . Great video! About 4 years ago a got a GREAT deal on an '89 Bayliner with a 140HP Mercruiser + trailer. Put about 60 hours into tearing the entire boat apart and was just about to sand down the shell when my wife left me and the project stopped. Now, 2 years later, I'm looking to restore the trailer and sell it for a profit. The boat shell, transom, top, etc I can't see salvaging or even sell because who would want it. Any pointers on the trailer or if I should even try to sell the torn apart boat?

  • @SMG_62

    Sorry to hear about your situation man. If you don't have your heart in a project it's best to sometimes just sell it and move on. If nobody will buy it, try and give it away to someone who's looking to work hard and restore it. Your curse could be a blessing to someone who wants a new project! On the plus side think of all the memories you'll be gifting to a young person and their buddies.

    I picked up a old jon boat and I am starting from scratch with everything. I will be doing the trailer first just like you showed us. You did good. However, I just might strip down the whole works and bring it in to get sand blasted instead of manually doing it. I can't stand as long as you kids can. This trailer looks like it should take me about 2 weeks to do. While I am getting the sand blasting done I'll work on the bunk boards and rewiring the trailer. Great question. Unfortunately this frame is boxed in so I only did what I could and when I had an opening I sprayed as much Rustoleum Stops Rust paint in as I could. In a perfect world this could have been avoided by doing some sort of acid wash but that would be way out of my budget.

  • @SMG_62

    There’s a few ways you can do it. The easiest way is to go to a hardware store and fine an easy out socket. They make it a similar size as the nut with teeth. You smack it on with a hammer and remove it with a ratchet. You can also cut them off with a grinder or you can drill the center of the bolt out with a drill. Good luck man.

    Looks great man! I have a quick question, so my trailer has little 4.80x8 4 lug tires. So I was wondering if I could put 4.80x12 4 lug tires on, would it work? I am completely redoing my trailer and I've never done anything like it before. The reason for the tire change is because the larger tires will of course hold more weight, which makes me comfortable. Thanks in advance! edit: I've literally watched this video like 3 times.. Your work is phenomenal, I love seeing old things be brought back to life.

  • @SMG_62

    @SMG_62

    I would actually recommend it if you think that weight is going to be a problem. Typically the axle is what you want to look at as far as capacities are concerned. I think most trailers either come with an axle rated at either 1500lbs or 2500lbs. So if you are overloading your trailer make sure your axle can handle the weight too. Here's a good link I found on the subject of tire sizes and trailers. www.etrailer.com/question-76104.html

    Might be a foolish question but did you use lag bolts to attach your bunks to the trailer? I used carage bolts years ago and I have noticed the carpet has warn off the top of the bolts and the top of the carage bolts are now scratching the bottom of my boat. I just wasn't sure if the constant wait of loading and unloading the boat would cause the lag bolts to come loose. Thanks for the vid tho. Your videos have saved me some headaches, especially your trolling motor video!

  • @SMG_62

    @SMG_62

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey Steven, thanks for watching the videos I'm glad they have been able to help you out. Unfortunately my thought at the time was to use carriage bolts instead of lag bolts. Yes, over time the carpet will wear off and your boat could get scratched. Sometimes it's hard to find a lag bolt that is big enough to hold and not too long, that's why I used the carriage bolts. In the future I will ONLY be using lag bolts because they are SOOOO much easier to use, and safer.

    Rather than using a wire wheel and spending 2 weeks it would be a lot smarter to take it to a professional sandblasting service. You'll get it back in less than a week and save yourself a lot of grief. I had mine sandblasted and it cost less than $200. Considering the time you spent, $200 is cheap. I also used black bed liner to paint my trailer. Super tough and looks good. It costs $10/can, which is twice the price of paint, but it lasts a LOT longer. Also, rather than use pressure treated wood, use cedar. Cedar is excellent in wet conditions and won't hurt aluminum.

    Let me clear this up. It took me two weeks to get it done. I probably have about 10hrs into cleaning up the frame. Overall it would have been easier and cheaper to even buy a sandblaster and sandblast it myself, but with the time, money, and space available at the time, I used what worked for me. Thanks for the comment. Glad my video could help!

    I know this has been a while, but do you remember the total cost for this project?

    I don't remember the exact total but I would guess I've got about $1500 into this not including the 9.9 outboard I purchased.

    Professional Sand blaster $200.00 or less then paint shop for a day $300.00 for powder coat. Heckbeith that two weeks to sand it down.

    If I had the space and money at the time to use a sand blaster I would have. Sometimes you just have to use the tools available brother!

    Great video but you might want to see a eye DR about your long squeezing of your eyes . Its not a normal blink .Something is going on with that I have never seen anyone do that before .

    I still won't use pressure treat on my jon.....the price of 2 2x4s and a role of carpet is cheap enough I rather replace bucks every 10 years instead of eat holes in my boat
