Restoration rusty old air compressor | Restore vintage air compressor
Our next project is to restore an old air compressor. The air compressor we bought at the second hand shop. It still works quite well, but its parts have been rusted a lot. We are not specialists in machinery restoration , so there are not enough tools for the job. But with all our strength we try to improve in the best way. I am happy to receive your feedback, advice, suggestions to improve yourself. I am very sorry that there are unwanted mistakes in the video .
Thank you for watching the video and for us to suggest

very nice job. but four things concern me, one the water that came out of the tank, in order for me to use that tank I would preform a hydraulic test in order to validate the structural integrity of the tank. Two I would be cautious of using the old pressure switch, it might work for a bit but would fail down the road, I would end up replacing it with a new one. Three I would never paint the air pipes with the fins coming off the compressor, due that what helps cols the hot air coming off the compressor. And Four I would replace the quick connect couplers with newer ones so I can us them with any newer air hose and tools.

they have not been opened and checked: engine, valves, ball bearings and fittings. most importantly, no air leaks have been checked from the tank and at the beginning of the video the water is rust-colored, it is not a good sign, probably the inside is worse than the outside. advice on painting: do not paint the cylinder dissipation slats otherwise the heat will not be disposed and there will be a risk of breakage due to overheating.

You "adults" need to grow the hell up and stop sending so much hate and start commenting nice things. I guarentee that most of you who comment hate can't do anything in this video or any of the other restoration videos on this channel. I seriously hope that you people learn that nobody cares about all the hate and that you just need to treat others as you would treat yourself. Excellent work. Keep it up. I have a similar compressor, I bought it and found it was seized, took the heads off and found it had water in one cylinder, I let Evaporust sit in the cylinder overnight and that freed it up enough to take the cylinder off. I found the top ring seized in the groove and I broke it trying to un seize it.. The cylinder has deep pitting and seeing as I couldn't find any place that has parts, I cleaned up the cylinder and took the broken ring off, put it back together and it now runs and runs well. In saying that though, I need parts. Where did you buy the rings from and do they sell other parts for the compressor?, ie cylinders.

The condition of the compressor raises too many questions... Why the receiver is so rusty relative to other components. The piston supercharger is possible in oil, and the electric motor is also in oil? But like there is no. The cover on the electric motor is generally as new. Why do fittings and pressure gauges then look in good condition? The receiver in General how could there be rust? I have the feeling that with him first, especially chemistry washed off the paint, and then direct pour acid or salt solution on it straight rust STAINS. Note that when he removed the electric motor and the piston supercharger, the pads on which they are installed in the MOUNTING PLACES also have an even layer of rust. How is that possible? Was he in the water all the time? If it was in such an aggressive environment that it was covered in rust, why did nothing happen to the sticker on the side of the receiver? Around the sticker you can even see a flat strip, as if it was sealed with something. The paint on the piston supercharger is all in lumps, as after applying the paint remover. All threaded connections are unscrewed easily and naturally, and this is in this state.... By itself, the compressor may not be very new, but not exactly vintage. Don't take people for fools. I found an old air compressor similar to this one with a belt drive on it. I powered it up slowly with a variac and was really surprised to find it had compresson and ran lol. Its gotta be from the 40s lol. I couldnt find any markers on it to tell me the make or model. Ive restore and build tube amps and radios in my spare time and love a good restoration project but im trying to decide if this compressor i found is worth the effort. Still undecided.

Definitely subscribed here. Could I suggest that you check all the bearings... Particularly given the amt of muck on the pistons, it is likely that the bearings have suffered. If they are open frame, then clean and repack. If they are sealed, chuck them and fit new ones.. Looking forward to more restorations. AND. definitely find some way of being certain that the tank is sound.... otherwise you risk... BOOM. Cheers

You should have tested the tank in pressure with watter and an hydraulic pump before even starting. At 12-15 bars. Pumps to do the test can be found for around 35-40€. And once you have it you can test your tank every year to make sure it doesn't explode your house (and you) search videos of compressor tank explosion you'll see the results. I would have sandblasted, it's cleaner than what you did, it can be sandblasted for around 20-30€ i think. But it seems like you've applyed some phosphoric acid so it may be good enough.

@H Biker not typical of electric motors of old. Plastic wasn't thought of as being useful on something that can get warm. Old motors are more likely to have a thin metal box (staring circuits, etc.) or a thin, shaped metal casing for smaller items (capacitor, etc.). Some electric motor companies opted for cast metal boxes but those are largely for big motors for specifically dirty industries where a thing metal box might allow intrusion.
