Restoration - Restoring a Double Bit Michigan Axe

I know some people are gonna wonder why is used the belt grinder
to shape the handle and not hand tools like spoke shaves and draw knives. The answer is that I did that last time I made an axe handle so I thought I'd switch it up a bit.
The second reason is that this piece of ash had a couple of knots in it which causes the grain to wave and bend making it hard to not get tear out when using hand tools.
Thanks for watching!

Nice to see you select the natural grain of the wood by splitting the log instead of ripping. Makes for a strong shaft. Thanks for sharing. Happy new year Cheers

Thank you very much!
Finally good to see someone restoring an axe properly. No high shine polish. Good selection of timber and beautiful handle shaping. Good sharpen. One of best videos on KZread.
Now thats how to hang an axe! Nice, tidy handle too. Nice work. Thanks for not burning the handle and sanding off.
I love how you alternate frequencies from low to high and high to low gradually it’s very cool. It’s like a piano going to all the different cords one by one quickly.
The cat at the end really brought the video full circle

Thanks mate. I did think about it but it's a tool first not an art piece.
A beautiful axe and an adorable cat
Finally, someone restoring an axe and knows what they're doing. Thank you

Meh.... I sometimes sand out the pits to make it look nice and buff to a brushed shine before hot bluing . Smoothing the surface helps the blade release from the wood better and bluing is durable protection. Doesn't hurt that the axe looks nice as well. I just finished an almost identical double-bit axe to the one in the video. Nicely smoothed and blued head, looks great and cuts even better. And the bluing (magnetite) takes oil very well. @@supermoon1430

TheGhung Fu I let my axes get a patina and oil them
I swung one every summer at a state park in W. NY cleaning up trails and bucking firewood. We were taught to sharpen one side super sharp and the other side more dull. One side for felling and the other for grubbing roots etc. Made sense at the time.
You show more skill than most of the 'dudes' twice your age! Great job! THANK YOU FOR NOT BEING PRETENTIOUS WITH THE MIRRORED AXE HEAD!
I love the axe restorations

Me too
I thank you for this great axe restoration. Just like the your camp hatchet restoration this one is just as good if not better, considering the immense effort you put into making the handle. I appreciate your selection of a proper timber and wood grain.
Greetings from Michigan.... Nice restore... When I was a youngster I swung one just like that .. I put a ton of hours on mine... Happy Blessed and prosperous New Year....Martin

I love restorations because they use both wood and a little bit of medal working. Good job!
This video is another reason to celebrate this day. Nice work
I like that I can enjoy your videos without sound :) sometimes very helpful in certain situations
Genius work. The content and the editing. What a great cat, too.
Amazing work! Nice to see you’ve acquired a new belt sander and handsaw
I love how the time was taken to make the handle out of a rough cut piece of lumber. Nice job.
I love all the flash fast forwards. Do a shave horse build, a standing shave horse. Cool vid dude.
Great job nice to see things brought back to life and great workmanship you should be proud .
Looks better than on Instagram amazing work man!
An axe from my home state! #michigan for the win!
I like this fairly old-fashioned restoration. For the most part you used old tools.
Thanks God you have not polished that axe. Nice handle, nice sensible restoration

I like his strategy. Using a hatchet to make an axe handle
Yes! Make the handle first then the axe head. Makes way more sense that way. Great work
Always a pleasure watch your vids. Have a great time with yours and a happy New Year.
I haven't watched the video yet but so happy to see any of your stuffs today. Just wanna say happy new year to you and take good care of yourself 🤗🤗🤗
Good to see an old art still living
That’s a very fine axe well done 👍
Finally! Someone who can hang an axe head properly and leaves the patina on the axe!
Happy New year from Chile! Hope 2019 is great for you and your channel!
I really like how you kind of told the cat to mind the axe XD Great video by the way, as always!
wonderful job on the handle
looks great, amazing work
Very nice job❤
That turned out beautiful btw..
Yep, I’m sure of it... that’s a big ass belt sander. Well done young man! I like a natural handle myself. Thanks goodness you didn’t do that stupid burning it with a torch thing.
I love how at the end you were trying to chop that log harder with your power.
What sets your videos apart is the audio of the rapid acceleration/deceleration of playback speed. Very original and not very common on the boob tube. Nice work.

Great vid, I love that cat!
One of the best restoration videos yet; thanks. It look like you saved up special wood for the handle. Was that ash wood? Thanks again for great channel.
Love the handcrafted touch! How long did you season the wood before making use of it ?
Well done 👍
Happy new year mate. Love your videos from Australia. I was wondering what types of wood you have access to and how you source it? Cheers.
Like how you did this the proper way, by making the handle first, then restoring the axe head, an making it an actual AXE HEAD and not a goddamned MIRROR LIKE OTHER PEOPLE! PEOPLE THESE DAYS THINK THAT MAKING SOMETHING SHINY MEANS “RESTORING IT” AND IT MAKES ME FURIOUS I’m sorry I had to get that out of my system...
Молодец, с Новым годом!
6:58 when my parents aren’t home
perfect. also, nice asmr.
I don’t know if it’s just me but when he is trying to get the axe head off at the start it reminds me of when I was little trying to take my tooth out aha😂
What kind of wood did you use for the handle?
You should burn the wood before you put the linseed oil on it. It makes it stronger and looks good
Nice handle. Love to see you restore it for use not show.
It will keel.
Is there something that can be sprayed onto the head to remove rust without damaging the existing handle?
Cat was the perfect touch at the end
o cara usa um Machado pra fazer o cabo de outro kkkk muito bom.
10:04 chicken jaja
That cat is like: "YES! Fresh crackles on teh log!"
Awesome job on the handle 👍🏻 but still should put a metal wedge in it.
very cool
good video
I can't find much info on the correct way to sharpen the two blades. Am I correct in assuming one should be made sharp, while the other more blunt? I know the intention is they serve different cutting curposes. If anyone could give me recommended sharpening angles for each of the blades, that'd be useful.

If your useing it to split made it somewhat sharp but not that sharp because it'll get stuck inside the log if its sharp however if your useing to to cut thing spike shave and stuff like that then yes make it sharp so yes i would make one side sharp other dull that's how mine is oh and if your restoring one leave it in a bucket of water overnight it'll have the wood and wedge swell together although I dont know if that's the correct way my father told me that when I was 12 restoring a craftsman 1970s usa made double bit axe
I just noticed he is using his restored camp hatchet
Great wrok
What kind of pants are those? I would like to have a pair myself.
good,you are awaesome ~new sub ❤❤❤
Молодца дружище! Well done buddy! ps кот хорош - the сат is good
Very helpful thank you. All, please do not use a ball peen hammer on your axe eye. Use 1/4' chisels, small drill bits, and a punch.
I have one of these and I live in Michigan.
What was wrong with the old handle?
Nice...😉
What make is the axe?

Hvor finder du de forskellige økser du restaurere? Restaurere også selv økser men kan ikke finde så mange. Også virklig fedt arbejde du gør. Er også ca. lige så gammel som dig og laver det samme.

Nope. Atleast where I am.
Yesterday i bought a restored double bit michigan axe for 90 bucks it is a 6o year old axe.
That's so new that you can get a brand new one at the hardware shop or a new handle costs hardly anything

Every blade
Ur restoration was perfect a million times better then 98 % of the vids of seen on youtube....just to me one favor and stop using the pole of ur single bits as a hammer to bang wedges....its okay to use them to hammer in wooden tent pegs or slam plastic felling wedges...but not hammer on metal...it can and evently will mushroom ur poll, spread ur eye, or crack the poll and eye
