I respect the effort... but... the technique used has totally destroyed the overall character of a japanese chisel.

Well, I think that those steel enclosing rings should be restored before applying to the handle. The rust on inner sides is still there. I think about nickel plating in case you prefer "shiny" look or cold blueing in case you prefer antique look.

@@kingoftrading75 Before you assembled the parts I was wondering if cold blueing would be of any use in preserving the metal or, in this case, if it was even desired. At any rate, as someone who has no knowledge of the right and wrong ways to restore a broken chisel, I think you did a good lob.

Japanese chisels have a hollow ground back. When you took an angle grinder to that chisel, you screwed it up royally! Much better if you use a bench grinder to clean up the bevel and a set of stones to polish the rest of blade. Nice video, and great work on the handle, but I would give you a D Minus for work on the steel. Better luck next time. Jon

What wood was used for the handle? Persimmon would be ideal, if you can find some.

It looks like you did the best you can, with what you had. 135,000 views of how not to do the chisel justice. More of a tech person I think.

What is the purpose of hearing the end of the chisel that inserts into the handle before reinserting it? I’m not questioning what you did, just trying to learn.

the ring end needs to be filed smooth and fitting onto the handles smooth tapered end, no corner or shoulders on ring or handle, the ring needs to compress the wood hence it and the handle need to be smooth, otherwise its a catarophic design flaw. the overall handle should be mostly straight in yhe middle with no added detail grooves or flat/oval spots. but the rest you did ok-ish on. research is key tho...

The old handle split because the hoop wasn’t set so it could work it’s way down the handle, and mushroomed instead. You haven’t fixed it and given enough hearty whacks with a metal hammer, it will split again.
