    With the current draw you showed and using 120 vac, I'm guessing it is about 1/4HP. Now that you have it all figured out, time to sand and repaint it to look great again... Thumbs Up!

    Hi Gary. It is marked as a 1/5 HP motor actually! Being designed for lower voltage and I am using 120V it causes low power factor. Thanks for the comment and encouragement! I will eventually get it painted up and update this video series.

    Wow, that old capacitor was the worst I have ever seen! Did a great job of fitting the replacement parts back in to it's old enclosure.

    Man, I wasted a perfectly good cap. Should have hooked it up to a low voltage supply and tried it again in the morning! :)

    Most potential relay I have run across require mounting with a arrow pointing up. Is that the case with yours?

    Thanks for the comment, Tom. This relay didn't mention any operating position in its documentation. The potential relay design balances a magnet against springs, and I am not sure how much effect gravity has on it. That would be a good test to do some day. When it comes to current-relay start devices they absolutely have to be mounted correctly! Those use a series coil to lift an armature against gravity and won't work if not upright.

    Yep, as MadMadMapper said, it's from a 1930's belt-drive Crosley refrigerator compressor.

    even with your skills, i would've put money on that motor never running again. and consequently lost that money. never judge a book by its cover, eh? even if that cover is made out of rust, dust, and crud.
