Restoration of an Old Railway Lantern. Beavers that Gnaw Iron.

I was surprised that after so many years all the original parts were preserved in this lantern!
I found this flashlight at an internet flea market. The seller asked for 20 bucks for the lantern, bought without bargaining and with great pleasure.
I'll tell you a secret, at the flea market there were lanterns in almost new condition and at a lower price. It seems to me that the sellers of old things are aware that there is a certain group of people who want rusty things, and therefore, from two identical lots, the one with more rust will be more expensive!!!!
Recovery process:
The first thing I did was fill it all up with WD-40. Some nuts had to be heated with a soldering iron, but this did not help either - here the Dremel cutting wheel came into play.
Having completely disassembled the lantern, I sandblasted it. As it turned out later, a fairly large part of the body consisted of rust, and when the metal was cleaned of rust, the body became like a sieve, and the upper edge seemed to have been gnawed by mice or beavers))).
I have long wanted to try a special plasticine for metal, the so-called "cold welding". The instructions say that they can close up holes in metal, as well as make lost or missing parts.
I tensed up quite a lot remembering the developmental plasticine modeling classes that I attended in kindergarten. After spending a couple of hours on the theoretical part, then I fashioned the corroded upper part of the case, and filled up the through holes.
After a couple of hours, the plasticine hardened and was quite well processed.
Smaller irregularities I puttied and then all grouted and painted.
I want to write a few words about batteries. I was surprised by their vitality! They are over 30 years old, and I only had to fill them with electrolyte and recharge a little, as they came to life again, AMAZING QUALITY.

Thank you! I hoped to the last that these batteries would turn out to be working. Otherwise, I would have to install modern analogues (by the way, I already ordered them in the online store)))
On those switches it should come with two nuts, one to put on the outside and one to put on the inside. Then you can put the switch so you don’t have any exposed threads sticking out like that. You can also get rubber covers for the outside so it’s more water resistant.

Nice job. You made it both look good AND work. Been a long time since I worked with NiCad cells like those. I used to use such NiCad cells when flying RC airplanes for the glow plug start up. Amazing amount of current from them. Thumbs Up

О, я точно такой же делал, и год выпуска такой же и состояние было почти такое же, но мой все таки не прогнил до дыр. Цветовое решение спорное, но все равно молодец

Я долго фантазировал на тему цветовых вариантов))) и вот что получилось)) Мне нравится)!!!
Забыли показать, как меняются линзы и заряд аккума после восстановления! Очень удачное сочетание цветов, и очень недурный результат. Жду нового ролика!

you did a really great job! i am also surprised for the batteries... they just work!(i bet they hold less than 1h whit thouse light bulps) yet, go find 30 years li-ions that works at all :)

Although I liked the restoration, I feel you could've done a bit more work on the switches. For example, make a special bracket, so that the nut isn't needed on the outside. Maybe also make a switch cover in the shape of the old one, that can slip over the metal switch lever on the outside.

Я переделал такой фонарь под аккумулятор от мопеда, и светодиод вместо лампочки, а два еще лежат все руки не доходят, все три в металоломе нашел.

Взял такой-же аккумулятор, от такого же фонаря и попробовал, таким способом оживить не хрена не рабочий способ,что то я сомневаюсь, что и у тебя не получилось😊

Они совершенно безопасны, если не выбить стекло и не употребить внутрь толченую светомассу. Там альфа-излучение, которое листом бумаги задерживается. Но таки да, я тоже пугаю одного знакомого таким тумблером, мой дозиметр пищит в панике от тумблера, а знакомый- от дозиметра.

Эм... А можно поинтересоваться, где Вы тут углядели переключатели с радиевой светомассой постоянного свечения? Как бы они попали на железнодорожный фонарь и для чего? Более того - правый (который на малую лампочку) переключатель, похоже, вообще люминофора не имел с самого начала.
Next time there is such bad rust, use the old parts as patterns, make new parts.

Почитал описание 🤣 Я в детстве (7-8 лет мне было) родительский бабинник магнитофон Daina разобрал 🤦🏻♂️ , а вот собрать как и у тебя не получилось 🤣🤣🤣 В общем тоже был стресс с родителями 😁 Кстати , а почему описание канала на немецком ? Страна - Россия а описание на немецком ... Или это автоматически , в зависимости от того где абонент (то есть я) проживает , Ютуб делает ?
