Restoration and Repair of an old Marine German compass . The most Beautiful compass STAND.

I found this old German compass at a flea market. There were no identification marks on it, only one inscription in German: "VEB Geräte- und Reglerwerke Teltow" I could not determine the year of its release, if you know, write me about it in the comments.
The compass was outwardly in fairly good condition, although rather dirty, with various stains. Several brass screws were missing, the compass fluid was missing, and the compass itself was misaligned. I don't really like the Bakelite look of such an interesting thing, so I decided to repaint it. Pre-cleaned the entire surface with fine sandpaper, and then degreased. Painted in three layers with drying.
I also made a stand for the compass, with the possibility of free swing.
The most difficult stage of the repair, for me, is filling the compass with liquid. The outlet is very small, and the displaced air greatly interfered with pouring liquid into the case. I poured an alcohol solution into the compass so that it would not freeze. It took quite a while, especially to get rid of all the tiny bubbles.
But I still really enjoyed working with this interesting thing, and I also liked my compass stand, now it sits very nicely on the shelf with the rest of my finished projects

NIce work ! Today is used a fluid called isopar - L, much like a mineral oil, with a low flash point!

little tip for old compasses here is the most effective solution to avoid damaging the writing and to have perfect lasting cushioning 50% glycol + 50% distilled water

looks like the casing was Bakelite, that usually comes up brilliantly with boot polish of all things.

Using emery paper and wire brush ids a bit rough ,should just buff it ,with cloth wheel

красивый компас получился в итоге, браво мастеру. весь ролик подмывало написать что старые морские компасы были заполнены спиртом, но не понадобилось т.к. Макс и сам заполнил его. реставратору желаю успехов, попутного ветра и семь футов под килем

That's a precision instrument. Would be useful on a ship, but fun to play with at home too.
Actually I don't like it... you've destroyed beautifull patina and hid brass uner paint :(

Спасибо. Начинал с того инструмента который был, старые отвертки, ключи..., Это уже позже, когда набралось несколько видосов, стало ясно что есть смысл построить отдельное помещение. Так и построил себе мастерскую,( небольшая, 4*3м), и уже туда подкупаю новые инструменты, токарник, пескоструйную камеру, компрессор...и т.д

Не знал ГДР делал ещё и компасы...

Why would you use a wire brush?
Using metal for stand you will need a method compass deviation

The inscribed letters 'VEB' (Volkseigener Betrieb) indicate that it was made in the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (East Germany), so is post-WWll.

Explanations of the re-assembly would have been good. Generally just a pretty basic clean-up & paint job, too much time spent on the compass stand. Disappointing end to the video.
Please send it to another KZread restorer, not wanting to be overly negative but you butchered that resto. 🤦🏼♂️
