Restoration Discovered in Golden Age Comic Book!

Flash Comics No. 20 Conservation Episode 1: Evaluation and Developing the Conservation Plan.
In this video series we evaluate this golden age comic book--Flash Comics #20, from August 1941--for conservation and submission to CGC. In today’s video i’ll perform an assessment of the current condition of this comic book and develop a game plan for maximizing both the preservation and the equity of this beautiful collectible golden age comic book. Unfortunately this comic has some hidden restoration!
The materials and methods I use are archival and are reversible. If done properly, they do not result in a purple restored label from CGC.

I've been at it for a long time Steve! At any rate it's all relative-sometimes i see the collections of the real whales and feel humbled. Thank you for the kind words. We'll whip this one back into shape.

Glad you enjoy it David. These are my favorite videos to create but actually have fewer views than my conservation videos and take me longer to put together. 🤷‍♂️

Fantastic! I love how you drop little hints about your findings and explain your thought process while inspecting. Always great to see a pro work at their craft.

Great looking book, love the variety of stories in these early 68 pagers. I also liked the cross-company advertising of all their different titles at the time.

This is such a beautiful book, Dr Paul. It does look well taken care of (and you wonder what happened to stamp collecting?! I used to have some and passed them on to my brother who still collects them). I think this book doesn’t need much to get the glue removed and get it back in its best shape for CGC. Look forward to the series.

Thanks Peter. We'll get her presenting as best we can. Regarding stamp collecting, i suppose it's still going strong in certain circles...at any rate the record sale for a stamp, at $9.5M, is nearly double that of the record paid for a comic book at $5.3M. So stamp collecting can't be completely dead, but it does seem like it's not as popular as it once was.

The 11th wrap top left also seems to have a chunk out of the top edge. I agree that it looks like a cutting rip. Hard to tell at just what stage it happened as the first part of the book has the rip, but then you begin to see the alignment cut guide mark at the top edge of the wraps. A very cool FLASH book.

Michael, you are exactly correct. On the 11th wrap the cut is so rough it looks like the paper was torn away rather than cleanly cut. I really do dig these pre-war golden age books though. 👍🏽

Awesome catch on the resto Dr. Paul. Curious to know if you noticed the glued piece at any point between when you first purchased it up until now when you began to assess it. Thanks for sharing as usual! 👍

Thanks Ryan! I did notice it a few years back. That’s when I put it on my long-term project pile. Happy to finally be getting to it now. It should go nicely with my other comics going to CGC in the Vintage tier submission soon.
