Dramatic Golden Age Comic Book Clean and Press Revealed!

Today we demonstrate how to correct a comic book spine roll and reveal the final clean and press results for our Golden Age Comic Book Crack, Clean, Press, and Resubmit video series.
Our candidate comic book is a copy of All American Comics #83, from 1947, graded by CGC as 5.0 with White Pages. There are only 12 universal copies in the CGC Census, and I purchased this comic book for only $189 plus shipping and taxes.
This video series will cover all aspects of Comic Book CCPR: Crack, Clean, Press, and Resubmit. We will cover how to evaluate a comic book CCPR candidate, crack open a slabbed comic book, clean and press the comic, and send if off to get re-graded to maximize value. This process is the same whether you are dealing with a PGX, CBCS, or CGC slab.

    Dr Paul. Really enjoyed this series. I think 6.5 is to be expected. Wonderful job on those pencil marks on the yellow. I think i will follow the affiliate link to that mars eraser and add it to my toolkit. Not only are you training walkthroughs top notch. But i appreciate the exposure to new items for the toolkit. I had no idea what a difference that ring light would make over a tradional incandescent one i have been using for 20 years. You keep making them i will keep watching them and recommending them. Thank you

    Fantastic job Dr. Paul!! You really hit a home run with this one. I’m hoping the CGC is humble and I’m going for a moonshot at a 7.0 for this copy after the C&P and ironing out the spine.

    Up North thank you for the kind words! I am really happy with it. I think 7.0 is not crazy (I’ve seen comics with worse flaws get there) but unlikely. But perfect for a moonshot!

    6.5 is optimistic, but it's a low dollar investment in a beautiful comic, so I would put it at a 6.0. Golden age comics are judged very differently from a lot of other stuff.

    I don't have experience with golden age yellows, but you must have used a deft touch to be able to erase the writing and streaks under the word "COMICS" without lifting the yellow! I was just looking at some CGC 5.5 and 6.0 golden age comics and this looks better, so I'd guess 6.5. Are you tempted to wet clean those stains in the central word balloon?

  • @DrPaulKosnik

    @DrPaulKosnik

    5 ай бұрын

    Thanks JCP! You can watch the entire process in episode two. I did discuss my rationale for not touching those stains in the word balloon in episode two as well. With only 12 Universal copies in the CGC census, I don’t want to risk a conserved or worse a restored label. I don’t think those stains are going to hold the technical grade back with the edge and corner wear, small rip, and a few small color-breaking creases anyway. It was suggested that a conservative blue LED treatment might hit the stains without bleaching anything else and I do have some time before my submission to CGC is ready to be shipped off so I may give it a short while under the BLED, we’ll see.
