Very good video as always. I have just one question. How did you know, that you have to replace the "VIPER22A" IC? The diode and the button is obvious but this one not so for me. Thank you for advance.
@GGigabiteM
4 жыл бұрын
The Viper22A chip is a fixed frequency switching chip. www.st.com/resource/en/datasheet/viper22a-e.pdf As seen from the diagram, it basically acts as a 60 kHz switching mosfet with a feedback input from the transformer for current regulation. While the chip is powered off, the SOURCE and DRAIN pins should not have continuity in either direction. In this case, they do so the chip is bad. But you really don't have to go this far in diagnosis to know its bad because it had a scorch mark under the legs. The bad diode is also not a normal diode, it's either a fast recovery diode or a schottky diode. These diodes are required because of the high switching frequency, using a normal diode will not work and result in circuit failure.
@ecsediimre8739

@@GGigabiteM Ok, thank you for the answer. But what is the error sign that shows the chip need to be replaced. Sorry, I am not so familiar with chips, but I am curious.

@@ecsediimre8739 If the main fuse did its job properly, then there will be no signs, just a non-working thing. In this case, you will need to use a multimeter to check components that are possible to check with it (continuity, shorts and resistances) to be sure they're in spec. Capacitors require a specialized tester (LCR meter or a capacitance tester) and advanced function tests of other components require more expensive equipment. You can diagnose and repair most SMPS issues with just a multimeter and LCR meter, but you need to know what you're doing. If the fuse didn't do its job (not blow at all or blow late) then expect to see varying levels of carnage. ICs blowing their packages apart is common, which can be so violent that it will put craters or holes into the PCB they're mounted to. Charring and fire is also common. A mild failure condition would be a crater in the IC package, or a hole somewhere on the chip with soot blown out, usually near or at a leg. Legs can also be blown off or vaporized entirely if there's enough current shorted through it.

Cleaning the DVD laser eye with a q-tip soaked in alcohol would ensure a bit better read reliability of the player. Also a clean of the spindle contact surface could have done with a touch up... Left and Right volume pots could have been lubricated with WD-40 or similar lubricant... Why didn't you try using the player with a DVD? You must have known that it wouldn't read... Overall a very average restoration... 6/10
