we had one of those in the parking lot at work, i'm pretty sure it was a dummy camera meant to freak out the people eating in their cars, to help them get back to work on time

No reputable CCTV installer uses these box camera housings anymore because they're long obsolete. About the last time they were used in numbers is 15 or so years ago before the transition to IP cameras. The only reason they still exist today is because new cameras are retrofitted inside, or some trunk slammer was getting rid of old stock. I remove them if I'm servicing a camera system and put an outdoor rated camera in its place. These box camera housings create more problems than they solve, the worst being moisture and wasp collection that inevitably ends up blocking the camera lens. If they're high up, you gotta get stupid long ladders or a bucket truck to service them, it's not fun. It is always hilarious to see how idiot fly by night installers use them though. I've seen them mounted sideways and upside down, which completely defeats what little weather resistance they have. Thankfully they're usually so poorly sealed that water leaks out when it does get inside, and it will. If there is a working camera inside, it's probably decades old and has a very poor picture. The types of analog cameras in these housings are usually 480i or worse, and about the only thing you can make out on them are blobs of color, or in the case of B&W cameras, blobs of shades of gray.

@@vista9434 Those hammer head looking things, like the M1114/M1124, also the M1124E? I hate those things. The firmware sucks and they're always a pain to adjust. I have a few dead ones in the back of my service van.

@@GGigabiteM Those are the ones (+their P and Q series brothers). I've deployed some Axis Cameras (M10 series and M30 series) and those have been fine but running any motion detection on the cameras would reduce the frame rate by a ton so I shifted it to XProtect instead.
