I just absolutely love you so much, I've never listened to anyone that's been able to explain everything so perfectly, like the words are coming directly from Jesus. I hope you don't let the negative comments get to you, because these videos have helped me so much with understanding things I didn't before. I can only imagine the impact they've had on so many other people. Love you Fr Mike!! 💞

@Franco Cavalli i agree with you, not about the typical beta male thing tho XD. I've been kickboxing for 4 years and been training MMA for a year now and nothing gives me purpose like MMA does. I think what fr mike is saying here can be hurtful to many chrisrian MMA fighters who have a future in the sport and to rule out competing for others entertainment seems quite closed minded. To compete in the UFC would mean testing your skills against some of the best in the world and that is why many find this appealing. Additionally the best way to learn how to fight is to compete- ill go further and say if you don't compete you will not know how to fight. This is because things you learn while sparing, you will not know if you can do those things under pressure and competing can help emulate this. In my opinion fr mike is looking at mma with a surface level viewpoint and does not fully understand the world that I, and many others, love.

Full disclosure: I'm a Gracie Jiu Jitsu instructor, Police Officer of 17 years, UFC fan and have studied Just use of force. First off you video made me think, which is always good. A Catholic should never fear the truth. Second, your primary assertion is spot on: is my entertainment For the Greater Glory of God. Third, 'violence' is abhorrent. We should never condone violence, do violence or use violence as entertainment. Where we might have a fruitful discussion is in the definition of violence. I believe there has been a lack of study from theologians on the topic. The following is my humble opinion but I think it's backed. There is an infinite difference between violence and force. Force is physical contact to overcome another's ability to resist that contact. Violence is force that robs an innocent person of peace. Peacemaking would then be force that stops violence or that restores peace. Because of your videos I think there might be a third term which is force in ruled competitions. But that would take much more thought to flesh out. I have witnessed many good churchmen conflate violence and peacemaking. There is an eternal difference between the two. Let me be very bold: as a police officer, father and husband it is my "grave duty" to protect others. CCC 2267 (ish). That includes up to the taking of a life if necessary to preserve life. That is a Holy act if intent is correct. This comes together in the specific topic of the MMA. You touched on some of this. Yes, many people watch the UFC because they believe they're watching violence and want to be entertained by violence. That is sinful. Some participate in MMA style training / matches to do violence. That is sinful. Some watch UFC, as you stated, for education. That's different. Some watch UFC to see two highly trained humans compete to see who wins. That is also different. Why? Because just because two humans are using force against each other doesn't mean it's violence. There's also the question of free will / permission. Now, if it really was gladiator style where one or both participants are forced, then objectively it is violence. But where both parties willingly participate and they abide by a set of rules meant to keep each other safe, it's not so objective. Let me add another angle. The Gracies, who started the UFC, specifically started it to prove that a skillful practitioner of Gracie Jiu Jitsu can overcome brute force with skill. When you listen to the Gracies' explanation of why they started the UFC, you don't hear propagation of violence as one of the reasons. Helio Gracie (founder of Gracie Jiu Jitsu) was a Catholic - I don't presume his standing at his death - and his style of self-defense are inundated with Catholic ideas: "I learn Jiu Jitsu so I don't have to use it." e.g. Bottom line: with the above definitions I don't think we can sweepingly condemn or condone MMA, as Catholics. I think it's a prudential judgement where one must examine themselves, their motives and the fruit watching MMS has on their lives. There is much more I could say, nuances I could give but I think this is too long anyway.... I hope I was able to express my thoughts well enough to follow. God bless you!

MMA is violent, man it's the referees who stop this criminals from murdering each other when they cannot defend themselves on the floor. Punching someone on the floor should be punishable in every religion and country. Obviously MMA is based off on violence, specially UFC. Just watch at the type of people who is in jail and compare them to UFC fighters. Same.

I agree but mostly disagree Your idea of using force as an office is surprising A) There is using force . B)There is using extreme force. C)There is using violence. MMA is adheres in using Extreme force as a result its VIOLENT. MMA is an agreement between 2 individuals to use extreme force against each other. Should that then make it acceptable? What next? Should we return to the Roman like gladiatorial arena and sign agreement to fight each other using weapons because there is an agreement? When do we draw the line? It's a known fact that certain members of the public loves violence resulting in the popularity of the UFC / MMA. These are mostly untrain or undisciplined minds who know not of the real meaning of the martial arts. Our next generation our young ones and undisciplined minds must not become accustomed to this 'acceptable violence' open to everyone via the media. The Gracie expose themselves as masters of Jiu Jitsu (ground fighting mainly via challenging all comers. REAL masters do NOT DO THIS. REAL masters do not make challenges. REAL masters have nothing to prove. If you are very good at your craft what do you have to prove? There is nothing dignified or honourable by making challenges in martial arts. MMA emergence occurred as a result of the Gracies challenge by the first UFC 1 bout. As a martial artist myself and an instructor of 40 years reports from students and colleagues come in of MMA like streetfights choke hold etc being use. Street robbery have change where the attacker now uses a "Naked Choke" to put the victim to sleep as hitting may cause him jail time. In Brazil BJJ is NOT SEEN AS A MARTIAL ART, because the art is predominantly based on excelling oneself in combat it has provided the wrong mentality to many that they can emerge the victor in street fights etc. You quite rightly stated by learning it you do not have to fight. As a law enforcement officer there is discipline in your training. The idea of martial arts is discipline respect integrity, self esteem. Showing off your art in the arena or on the mat in bouts whether professional or in challenges was never the idea. Sadly the Gracies miss that important RULE. MMA /Cage fighting It is damaging and negative in too many ways to mention. As a police officer protecting the public its frightening you would accept 2 parties who willingly participate and abide by a set of rules (Where extreme force is used ) as acceptable.

One thing I would say is that "violence" is when one or more people are being violated. These mma combatants are willing to get in the ring and compete with each other and are not being violated. They are simply competing against one another. In other sports people are hurt much worse all the time such as football or hockey, etc. If we were to go down this road where people are being hurt while competing, I believe we would have to stop watching all sports.

Great follow up video. This is what most people on youtube aren't doing. This video added onto the discussion and presented some different things to consider. I didn't agree with the first video but there's no way that someone can look at the question you present in this one and not take away something that can improve their life. "Does the entertainment I choose help or harm my commitment to be like Jesus?" is a great question. The examples of Family Guy and Game of Thrones are all great. The questions we ask ourselves are what keep us on the strait and narrow. Thanks for adding one more to the list. Keep it up!

I admire that you listened and responded to us Father in a loving way. I love your videos so when I watched that first one on MMA, I have to admit it hurt because I didn't feel like you knew enough about it. For the longest time, I'd never consider watching UFC because of the reasons you mentioned. Then I came across old videos of the former Welterweight champion, Georges St. Pierre and it's inspired me to get into it and has brought a lot of meaning, discipline and identity to my life and my Catholic faith. I agree some of the fighters aren't people to emulate but Georges is a real man. He says the first lesson in MMA is humility. He makes the sign of the cross and prays for his opponent before he enters the cage, never trash talks but bows down to his opponent (usually right after they've lost to him) out of respect and love for them. He was bullied when he was a kid and is a strong advocate against it. So it's "fighters" like that who inspire me to grow as a man and "fight" for what's right. Also, thank you for what you said about those of us who watch for educational purposes. That's why I watch GSP's videos. He's not perfect but I think he provides a good example on how a champion and a gentleman should act in MMA. God bless you.

Randy Grim you should research the good too not just the bad. Christ's Church is perfect not the people in it . i mean one of the first 12 Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus but the other 10 gave their lives for Jesus. Saint John the eleventh was exiled and died alone after being given the book of Revelation. If you look through history and, to this day their are countless Good Holy Priests who Sacrafice their entire being with endless sacrafices for the salvation of souls; yet in return they are slapped in the face. Still they continue to love sacrafice and yes even die for Christ Jesus -while winning souls for God's Glory, trying to save as many souls as they can and, without counting the cost to themselves. It is a great sadness that the bad is all you choose to look for. may you find God's Peace🕊

Father Mike, the only reason people need to disagree, is because of self justification. We always want to try and defend things that are questionable, and generally, as you know, it's very difficult for us as humans to have to accept that perhaps something we are partaking in, is actually stripping our human dignity. We can train ourselves for greatness without bringing harm on to others purposely. You are a voice of total truth, and your points are very straightforward and clear. There are many people who become consumed by this world, I was one of them, we've all been guilty of it. But the only way for true transformation, is not only hearing truth, but opening our hearts to recognizing that we need to be changed by it. Thank you for these videos, I really appreciate them.

This is a quote from my favorite boxer. Olexander Usyk, Hes the unified heavyweight champ and an eastern rite catholic from ukraine. "A knockout is a tough matter for an athlete. I really do not want to take health away from anyone. I am really happy when we both get out of the ring on our own feet," he said.Of course I want to win, but I don't want to hurt anyone."

Thank you Fr Mike as always. There is a really lovely poem that your video reminded me of. I think you and others will like it. God bless you Fr Mike. If Jesus came to your house to spend a day or two - If He came unexpectedly, I wonder what you'd do. Oh, I know you'd give your nicest room to such an honored Guest, And all the food you'd serve to Him would be the very best, And you would keep assuring Him you're glad to have him there - That serving Him in your own home is joy beyond compare. But when you saw Him coming, would you meet Him at the door With arms outstretched in welcome to your heavenly Visitor? Or would you have to change your clothes before you let Him in? Or hide some magazines and put the Bible where they'd been? Would you turn off the radio and hope He hadn't heard? And wish you hadn't uttered that last, loud, hasty word? Would you hide your worldly music and put some hymn books out? Could you let Jesus walk right in, or would you rush about? And I wonder - if the Savior spent a day or two with you, Would you go right on doing the things you always do? Would you go right on saying the things you always say? Would life for you continue as it does from day to day? Would your family conversation keep up it's usual pace? And would you find it hard each meal to say a table grace? Would you sing the songs you always sing, and read the books you read, And let Him know the things on which your mind and spirit feed? Would you take Jesus with you everywhere you'd planned to go? Or would you, maybe, change your plans for just a day or so? Would you be glad to have Him meet your very closest friends? Or would you hope they'd stay away until His visit ends? Would you be glad to have Him stay forever on and on? Or would you sigh with great relief when He at last was gone? It might be interesting to know the things that you would do If Jesus Christ in person came to spend some time with you. Lois Blanchard Eades

A good, measured and reflective response. Great to see it sparked some conversation. I'm a lifelong martial artist, and while I don't compete professionally, I see MMA as the pinnacle of martial arts skill. The entertainent factor comes in third behind the physical skills displayed and the courage and mental fortitude it takes to fight professionally. For me it's an admiration of human will and skill at the highest tempo; martial arts sits unquestionably atop all other sports or physical activity.

Awesomelipe I personally find it hilarious because it is often so over the top, that I can't take it seriously. I would go so far as to say that most of the guys saying it don't even take it seriously. If it is truly sincere ill will, harassment and insult, then it of course has no place in martial arts and is an unfortunate side feature of MMA.

Thank you Fr Mike! I'm glad you did a follow up with the extra video, though I only watched both at the same time. This part of the spirit of Christ, and guided by him is precious and sacred for our relationship with Jesus. I know you focused on the entertainment side of things I did wonder where the core of the sport arose from and the influence of this too as a Christian? As we can choose to be more authentic as a child of God through MMA seems more of other spiritualities - is it and if so what elements?? As know some good practising and faithful Catholics who are involved (not on the performance side of things). Christ abundant blessings to you and the ministry He calls you too daily!!

I think it's a great point that we need to consider what we're allowing into our lives and I fully take that on board. It's part of the reason I've left behind a teenage love of horror movies. The misery of them and the dwelling on suffering is not something I feel comfortable with in my 30s. I think an argument can be made that watching media that challenges us is healthy, but, as with your MMA argument, it's helpful to draw a line and to question what it is we're getting out of these kinds of media. I've just found your videos, but I'm enjoying them, thank you.

You make great points and give us a lot to think about with these videos. So thank you for your ministry. I can't help but to wish though that you had avoided going after specific media, like MMA, Game of Thrones, etc. In the context of ministry, cursing specific incarnations of darkness rather than simply shedding the light triggers my old legalistic and joyless Protestant days and blocks me from the wisdom, truth and beauty you point to on the other side of such conversations. I know this is my baggage I'm bringing. to the topic, but I can't imagine that I'm the only one who has it. You are blessed with such a gift for shining the light, and it has made me and others want to follow. In doing so, we will shed the darkness in our lives naturally. But when a ministry such as yours stops to dwell on this or that aspect of media as impure, it complicates my attention from focusing on the pure to grappling with deciding what is impure, which are most often things that would have fallen aside from my path anyhow as I grew closer to God. To give a practical example, making the point about the unacceptability of human suffering as entertainment would have been a powerful video if you provided us with just the jumping off point to examine our own motives and consider MMA and other things that might apply to this truth. Closing up such a profound point with "watching this specific thing is ungodly" though, closes minds and hearts that could have been reached otherwise. I hope I'm making sense. In any case, I still appreciate your ministry, and you may take or leave my thoughts on the matter as you see fit.

Thank you for this video Fr. Mike! I know very little about the Law of Exposure and the concept that the morals of the entertainment we consume directly impact our morals. To me, this is an alarming concept, because I certainly surround myself with entertainment promoting morals in contradiction with Catholic morals, despite being a practicing Catholic striving for holiness. To some extent, I don't yet believe the connection between consuming and becoming is so absolute, but to be brutally honest, I also just really enjoy my secular entertainment, and have a hard time imagining living without it. It would be incredibly hard for me to give those things up, especially the things I use daily, such as pop music, for the likes of unwinding, study and motivation. I'm not saying it is impossible for me to give up secular entertainment, but I know myself well enough to admit I would not be able to give it up overnight. Could you please talk to us more about this? This is such a broad concept, and I would like to know more about how you recommend applying it practically speaking. Am I misunderstanding you, or are you really suggesting we should eliminate all entertainment containing even a single non-Catholic value? Do you think whether a piece of secular entertainment is harmful to the soul may depend on the consumer? Isn't there something to be said for coming to understand other perspectives, cultivating compassion, and generally exercising out intellects from watching, say, a movie such as "Me Before You"? Are we not able to enter into fictional fantasy worlds and ponder things while differentiating from the real world and what we chose to believe as Catholics? As far as I am aware, for years I have been listening to pop songs with lyrics I disagree with for the sake of the music, without the words changing my mind on the issues in question. Are you saying such a practice is really likely to change our views, even when we steadfastly acknowledge the lyrics' flaws beforehand? I could go on with examples, but I hope you understand what I'm getting at, and I hope to hear more from you about this. I pray that I may have the grace and resolve to make any entertainment changes God may desire. God Bless Father!

I agree, for example, I have faith but also have a deep love for horror movies and horror fiction ever since I was a kid. Stephen King completely changed my world, but he also writes with such love and compassion for humanity in many of his novels. I also love anything Gothic, have dabbled in things like tarot and oujia boards and the paranormal...but to me those are all just light entertainment and I don't feel it really contradicts my Christian worldview or corrupts it even. It does take mindfulness though to separate the light from the dark. I am pretty sure Fr. Mike would not approve of horror movies or tarot but some Stephen King novels I read literally felt like reading the Bible to me, he has such an eye for the human experience. I think it's all about moderation and mindfulness really.
