    some parts of fanbases really need to learn that media does not have to really good to be enjoyable and that media enjoyment has subjective factors. there's no issue liking something flawed or something that someone else does not like.

    Man, I love The Room, and that movie sucks. People tend to attach themselves too much to media, so they think "i like it = good", so when you say that something its of not so great quality, to them its the same as invalidating their feelings, and they think that you are attacking them, which is pretty unfortunate.

    I will never understand people who say, "well if you hate it so much, why are you making a video or reviewing it in the first place?" I hate that question so much and the people who ask it that immediately assume that I'm going out of my way to find this bad material are acting in bad faith. I bet you they'll be the same ones to say, "well you can't criticize this piece of media because you haven't seen it," but when you show them proof that you have seen it and can provide evidence of the its flaws, they pull this crap, and you can never win with these kinds of people. I personally review and comment on "bad pieces of media" because I want to improve my taste in media and for studios, companies and other media formats to improve as well. If we don't critique stuff like Life is Strange, then we'll just get fed the same garbage material over and over again until we stagnate into uncreative territory where game developers, tv execs and movie producers stop caring about originality or breaking boundaries in media and get complacent, that to me is a society I refuse to participate in. I love your form of editing Dumbsville, you've quickly become one of my favorite youtuber reviewers and keep up the good work!

    Bad media is the most fun to analyze. It's like doing an autopsy of an incredibly deformed corpse. I find it amusing to speculate just what the fuck were the filmmakers/writers/developers thinking, and how it could be improved the next time. And if you make your analysis public, there's always a chance someone will learn something from it and avoid doing a stupid in the future.

    @@simoneidson21 that’s not the point. If you noticed, I was referring to how Chloe’s personality impacted Max’s writing, not how it impacted Chloe’s own. Chloe’s horrible personality makes Max’s writing worse because we’re not given a good reason why Max is so attached to Chloe no matter what the latter does. Chloe being such a horrible person makes the relationship between them very hard to like, believe, or get invested in. Max is made a weaker character through this connection when her writing was already mediocre at best. Abusive relationships exist, but people have reasons for staying in them, even if they’re not good ones. Max’s “guilt” over “abandoning” Chloe is not enough to make her staying with Chloe believable. Moreover, that whole thing and how it’s written like we’re supposed to feel like Max is a bad person for moving even when it wasn’t her decision to make fails to make the audience feel like Max is or was a flawed or selfish person. The game isn’t just gaslighting Max into staying with her, it’s gaslighting the AUDIENCE into liking or sympathizing with these characters.

    @@simoneidson21 I like the LISA series, the second game has you play as a bad character. The thing is though that I can believe them as people or for almost all characters really, in the case of someone like Rando [spoilers] being so timid or Buzzo being so fucking mean I can get their motives. I can get Chloes, to a degree considering she's got a shit dad. What I can't get is why the stories written as if this relationship is _healthy_ instead of what it is [which would give way to some major angst instead of this wishy-washy 'oooh but max is actually bad for not doing anything'].

    "Chloe cares about Max", "Chloe and Rachel are a cute couple" I've never seen such tone-deaf comments in my life, and I can bet that these are the same types of people who will say, "yeah well it's not healthy, but we need all the queer representation we can get in media." Let's be honest here for a moment, if Chloe or Rachel was a man and it was a straight relationship being portrayed instead of a lesbian one, these same types would foam at the mouth and cry about how the game is awful for glamorizing abusive relationships and emotionally manipulative friends, which is ironic considering they give this stuff a pass because gay, I guess. Not to mention, these games are geared at a teenage audience and frankly, I find it disturbing that some people are influenced by these games and think the relationships in it are cute and subliminal, when we all know they'd be singing a different tune if the genders were swapped etc., which is very hypocritical if you ask me. I'm not saying that these queer relationships need to be all sunshine and rainbows, quite the opposite in fact, had LIS shown this kind of relationship for what it was, and not glorified it, but had Max distance herself from Chloe's toxicity and maybe befriended Kate instead, while also solving the murder mystery, I would have honestly liked that a lot more, it would have taught a better lesson as a result and not exploited Kate's suicide plot for shock value. As a bisexual man, I'm all for showing toxic gay relationships in media because there are bad people who just happen to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community, I just don't like when people gaslight me and tell me I'm delusional for calling an obvious toxic friendship/abusive relationship for what it is and then turn around and say this is the best thing since sliced bread.

    Here’s how I would have written the og game’s thing with Max and Chloe Prick: the two were childhood friends and when they meet up again, Max is so blinded by the fact that she’s getting to spend time with her childhood friend again that she doesn’t see how toxic Chloe has become. The game can paint Chloe in a positive light for a little while, but slowly the light starts fading. Over the course of the game Max realizes this and confronts Chloe about this, to which the two have their “animated characters get mad at each other and split up act 3 drama” moment. Keep the alternate reality weirdness for Max to truly realize how different Chloe has become and then, have Chloe try to start changing and make her actually APOLOGIZE for being so toxic and abusing her powers. Have some excuse be that, in a similar way to Max and Chloe’s relationship, Chloe picked up Rachel Amber Heard’s toxicity without realizing it was harmful, instead thinking it made her “cooler” or something idk. Quirky maybe parallel yada yada. Give the players the choice whether to forgive her or not. Then, this will make the final choice of the game more impactful: Save the town full of both people who hate you and people who love you, your friends and family, at the cost of your childhood friend, or save your childhood friend who, despite having been so toxic to you (Max), has tried to redeem herself and, even through it all, was still your best friend? Idk. Forget the killing dog part too. Like Sonic said, that’s no good. Also, ADHD gang. I got it too and your editing style has honestly inspired my own editing. :)

    I think it is fair to say Chloe might have wanted to believe she cared about Max, since no one wants to make themselves out to be the villain. Especially someone like Chloe who doesn’t seem to genuinely self reflect very much. And maybe she did care, but you can still be awful to someone while caring about them. Happens all the time, most psychological situations like this aren’t intentional. I don’t think Chloe was some scheming devil made of pure evil I think she was just a selfish messed up person who hurt a lot of people because she didn’t want to assess her own flaws and take a second to question her and that girl who I forgot her name but was in before the storms actions. Also why don’t people watch videos all the way through anymore it could solve so many misunderstandings

  • @brendanhutchins
    @brendanhutchins Жыл бұрын

    Maybe the reason I liked the games a lot at the time was largely because of Chloe’s step father. I chose to sacrifice her because she was super annoying and I didn’t want David to die after his character arc and redemption. Honestly, if the game ended with Chloe just dying to photography dude and you had to chose whether to tell the truth to david or not would have made a very compelling and thought provoking ending (in other words cut the cringe last episode). It also would have shown that even though Max was able to reverse time and change things, some things are just destined to happen, but how you respond to those things is the real choice. Unfortunately the Life is Strange series has the subtlety and grace of an elephant running through a fine china shop so they would have never done that, but just imagine…

    This video is pretty telling just how sensitive others can be on the internet. Some people can't get over the fact that not everyone is going to like the same thing they do. It's not a slight against them. You can still enjoy something even if other people don't like it. Heck you can acknowledge that the thing you like has flaws BUT you still like it despite that. That sentiment is made clear in your videos, and yet people seem to miss that.

That is my subjective feeling. Objectively, its a bad movie. But people cant comprehend how things they like are maybe bad. Lots of modern popular music is bad. Its popular but that doesnt mean its good. You liking something doesnt mean its good. Its 2 different things.

    This is like watching Steven Universe reviews. The video is great and insightful, but the fans in the comments are trying to tear it apart because it disassembles the work down into its flaws. Like the whole point of a review is to dissect a piece of media, regardless if it's good or bad. Dumbsville put in the time to talk and edit a lengthy video together over it and always gives genuine insight, even when masked behind ridiculous memes. Half of these comments couldn't even explain why they thought he was wrong and the other half failed to see the irony in, "if you dislike it so much, why did you review it?" If you hated his video so much, why did you comment on it? Hmm, it's almost as if they could have found that answer themselves.
