To be a drummer for life, whether professional or otherwise, seems to take on a spiritual dimension for me. It really is a journey, a calling, a vocation. One that takes tremendous resolve, as you will meet many obstacles & challenges, both internal & external. Along the way you'll have to develop a diverse skill set that encompasses every area of life, people skills, listening skills, honest self evaluation, money & time management, conflict resolution, not to mention all the skills needed just to play our instrument. If we have a mindset of the eternal student, then we can embrace life in all its fullness, both the pleasant and the unpleasant, and be prepared for any circumstance that we encounter. For me, resolve is one big piece of the puzzle, perhaps the foundational piece.

Vinnie, what amazes me most is how good of a speaker you are. We all know what an unbelievable drummer you are, but how do you became such a great speaker?

Wonderful insights ...reaching beyond the limited sense of who you are, how you identify self, what you believe about who you are and your purpose, ultimately Empowers you to meet and overcome challenging situations musical or otherwise...the realization that you always have the power to change, raise your sense of self, no matter what is happening around you (or as you may perceive 'to you') the inner 'knowing' of self validation, that gives an inner peace and psychological freedom.

Thank you Vinnie, for sharing your experience. I just would like to mention an anecdote (sorry for my bad English). I was watching an old video, from a television program, with Herbie Hancock and wonder who were the supporting musicians in the background. So, I recognised Abe Laboriel, because of his dancing, and couldn't name the drummer on the background, until, I saw his right hand playing the cymbal, and instantaniously, recognised your playing and later images confirmed it. There are other anecdotes, but it would be too long to write here! ps Yes, I do love your album and really appreciate all the work you did with Frank (Zappa). Thank you for taking the time to share. I was a musician for most of my life (50+years) and recently, had a seizure and can't play no more (no memory, no strength in my left hand, etc, etc), but I never had any kind of plan B, so I'm kind of lingering in limbo, wondering what I can do with the experience that I gathered. TY!

Jeez Vinny, you got me scratching my head on this one! Definitely the battle I have fought my whole life rather than jump in. I stayed in construction. I’m 65 now finally found Solid time with a definitive pocket, Also relaxation and technique coming together and balance little too little too late! So now I’m fighting whether to buy an interface Because of this incredible desire to record now?

I know I’ll never be on your level, but I can play as good of pocket as anybody , I won’t be blown out 160 tempo in nine, but I got some friends that can play some pretty solid rock and some others that would like to do some recordings so maybe that’s an option,,what do you think, too old? See…. Still vacillating.🥶
