Resin Casting Tutorial: Metal Cold Casting Real Bronze Powder and Resin

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this resin metal cold casting demo, we demonstrate using Smooth Cast 325 casting resin along with metal powder to create a metallic finish. Cold casting is a term used to describe the process of mixing metal powder with a translucent casting resin and applying the mixture into a mold. The finished casting give the appearance of solid metal. The metal cold-casting process is faster and much less expensive compared with foundry casting of molten metal. Different metal powders such as Bronze, Brass, Nickel Silver and Copper can be used depending on the desired effect.

    Is it possible to cast a positive with this method for a sculpture that has been cut up and needs to be reassembled? My first assumption would be "NO" but I thought I'd ask anyways. I guess the real question is, if so how would one reassemble several pieces, seal the seams and buff the metal?

    Smooth-Cast 325 tends to be a better gel coat material, but the same process could be followed with other resins. Note that Smooth-Cast 300 never gets quite as black as Smooth-Cast 325, so this might affect the finished appearance.

    In this video there is no mention of a parting agent being used, is a mold release not needed? Also I was wondering how well the onyx adheres to itself as in an already cured piece? was thinking of casting one color then casting the rest with another.

  • @smoothon

    @smoothon

    7 жыл бұрын

    Great Question. A mold release is not needed when pouring a urethane resin into a silicone rubber mold. When creating a multi-layered casting, as seen in this video, you will want to make sure that you pour your Smooth-Cast® ONYX against the Smooth-Cast® 325 filled with metal powders as soon as possible to achieve a better adhesion.

    i'm making a fairly small figure from my mold and ended up just making a 1:1:1 mix of smooth Cast 326 and brass powder for the entire cast, skipping the brush on stage entirely. however when i put it in the pressure chamber, it seems that all the brass powder gets pulled down toward the bottom of the mold (the top of my cast) so that it doesn't have an even distribution of brass in the resin. Is there anyway to prevent this without the brush on stage? also not using the pressure chamber causes bubbles, but i get a more even distribution of the brass. any ideas?

  • @smoothon

    What if you are casting one both sides? Like minting a coin this way, how is that done? Also, when you add the metal powder, does the final product get the weight like the metal, and does it easily break?

  • @smoothon

    @smoothon

    10 жыл бұрын

    If you want to cast more than a one sides piece, you could 'slush' the gel coat of resin with metal powder around the inside of the mold before backing the gel coat up with unfilled resin. This urethane resin is quite strong, and will get heavier when the metal powder is added.

    It's much easier to brush the inside of the mould with a thin dusting of bronze powder before backfilling with your resin mix. Also you can sprinkle bronze powder on the resin just as it starts to set so the back will also have a bronze finish. Then all you have to do is burnish with 0000 steel wool.
