The Resident Evil franchise changes with each game. From room to room zombie puzzles, to third person Louisiana horror adventure. Each entry had something that made them unique, but Resident Evil 8 seems to mash so many elements together it becomes disconnected and the quality suffers. Upon a few playthroughs I can finally see what Resident Evil Village could have been, and let's explore that in my RE8 review.

The next generation of survival horror rises in the form of Resident Evil Village,
the eighth major entry in the Resident Evil series. With ultra-realistic graphics powered by the RE Engine, fight for survival as danger lurks around every corner. Set a few years after the horrifying events in the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 7 biohazard, the all-new storyline begins with Ethan Winters and his wife Mia living peacefully in a new location, free from their past nightmares. Just as they are building their new life together, tragedy befalls them once again. When BSAA captain Chris Redfield attacks their home, Ethan must once again head into the nightmare to get his kidnapped daughter back.

@@thomasgarcia8626 That depends on which game you're talking about. RE2 and 3? Yes, but those are way too linear as is. CV? Somewhat, but there is a higher degree than that. Zero? Well Zero sucks and I'd rather play any other RE game anyways so who cares. I'm talking about RE1 more-so though. You could get any of the 4 emblems in any order. I have desperately wanted that level of freedom in a game since, and the series never gets there. But RE8 is more frustrating since it's map design would be perfect for that level of freedom, since it has multiple areas orbiting a hub. Imagine if the game gave you the option to go through those areas in any order. I think it would benefit 8's pace greatly, especially since it could mean I don't have to end the game with the god awful Heisenberg Factory section (I never thought I'd hate a final big area as much as the final parts of Code Veronica, but here we are). RE8 falls into that Code Veronica category of having such expansive areas and so many optional areas that it frustrates me how linear the main structure is. Except RE8 goes even further since it has areas orbiting a hub area, instead of CV which kinda just has dumb narrow bridges connecting one area to the next.

Jirard isn't specifically talking about Ethan being infected. RE7 indirectly tells you you're infected by detailing what symptoms infected people go through, specifically through seeing halucinations, subtly letting you know for sure, if you for some reason weren't sure before. By "retcon", I'm quite sure he's only talking about Ethan having outright died at the begining of RE7, which there really aren't any clues or subtle voice lines in RE7 to hint at that fact. The Revelation in RE8 that Ethan died at the beginning of RE7 may line up perfectly without knocking any other pieces out of place, but it's absolutely a retcon. When things like that are planned, there's always at least one tiny hidden subtle clue, designed to not make any sense or even seem relevant, that can then be looked back on after seeing the sequels revelation and have that "OHHH SHIIIT" moment of realisation that it was always there. It's not a big deal. I really don't care, but it's definitely a retcon. Just one that really doesn't matter. The entire RE series talks about the difference of when a virus infects someone whos DNA isn't ideal for it, they mutate uncontolably and become monsters, but when the DNA is a perfect match, the person simply becomes a type of super hero, like Wesker. I enjoyed RE8 btw, finished it three times. I enjoyed the ending. I just didn't find anything to be a revelation. It really just seemed like a dumb, upfront way to loudly spell out what had been more subtly explained in the previous entry. Ethan supposedly having died, literally changes nothing. It's just meant to be a shock value moment. His death is as impactful as someone who was legally dead for 3 seconds on an operating table. When you don't even realise you had ever died, have all of your faculties and motor function, are still able to reproduce and no other regular person in the world suspects anything strange about you ... are you really dead? I think the writers realised that the revelation of "Ethan is infected" would be met with a "No shit" response, so came up with ... "But he also died!!!" in order to try and make you not realise that literally no new meaningful information had been given to the player. This is an opinion from someone who enjoyed the game, lmao.

Go look up dialogue changes depending on the order you play the bosses in any Souls game. They've perfected the open world interconnectivity thing while also making the dialogue make sense no matter what path you take. It is absolutely possible to have 2 alternate scripts that play out depending on different triggers. For example, if you ring the Gargoyle Bell 1st, the Crestfallen Warrior will tell you to go ring Quelaag's Bell, & vice versa.

I, personally, played re8 on release day and completed it a few weeks back so I understand some of the things you’re saying. But you focus on the games separate elements so much that it took up the first 18 minutes of the video. I’m not hating but when you choose to focus on one thing that you consider to be a problem then every thing surrounding that thing turns into a part of the problem. You talked about how Moreaus part had more adrenalin during the chase but it can be seen as what you said about re2’s speed rund “a different kind of fear comes up, are you sure you’re going fast enough”. Long story short, every problem has different aspects but when you solidify it as a problem you won’t see the possible good angle that it could entail.

I hate the Resident Evil franchise, and even I was feeling this. I kept thinking, "Someday a few years down the road, someone is going to make a video about how RE8 was a masterpiece because oh how every gameplay segment feels so different, yet contributes to one larger whole." I mean, I'm playing Ori and the Will of the Wisps right now, and the exact same thing could be said of it. It presents you all 4 wisp subquests at the same time, making you think you can go anywhere, but in reality you are forced into doing them in order. I'm surprised, I really disagree with all of this! I'm very much done with open worlds, so the metroidvania argument doesn't resonate with me. I thought this was an incredible, carefully crafted experience with its tonal shifts handled perfectly, going from classic RE (Castle) to the most horrifying part of the game, and then eventually creating horror through darkness and challenge, rather than spookiness (final factory). This was really a love letter to everything Resident Evil is, and, like you said, you just want to return to your previous areas, and that's why I found it so rewarding to replay this game over and over again. As for Ethan, I do think you're wrong, it would've been so jarring to see him be ultra serious against these almost comedic stereotype villains, he fits perfectly in the world, and that immersed me in it, I was along for the ride all the way. I honestly don't think you're meant to feel his plight as a father. He's not even hunting his daughter, he's hunting down test tubes that people are telling him are his daughter, the game is very 'gamey' in its presentation, it's self aware, and I think that equally makes the finale, where the ending of the book is revealed, all the more powerful, as it suddenly pulls you into the reality of all you've seen. My favourite of all the RE's yet, I don't think there's a weak moment to be found.

It's like RE4 in the sense that they keep moving you to fresh locations, but don't tell me there isn't backtracking because you need to backtrack through the village to get all the treasures, and in some points just to advance the game. But making a review centered about what a game should be based on personal opinion is what I'm disappointed with in this video. Holy moly I don’t know if I’ve ever disagreed with a Completionist video more. It feels like you just couldn’t get over the game not being a “Metroidvania” (which it could be argued Resident Evil has always been pretty Metroid-like in its set-up of how the world opens up). The world is also a lot more open than you give it credit for. There are a lot of optional areas that you don't need to go to but are able to when the world opens up more, including some semi-boss fights. I also found the replayability up there with RE4 in terms of being fun to just immediately jump back in upon beating it. Doing the bosses in any order like Mega Man also just really wouldn't work out. Castle Dimitrescu is the perfect opener for the game and things have to end with Heinsenberg's factory given his planned betrayal against Mother Miranda and wanting Ethan to wipe out the other Lords to make it easier for him. So feasibly the only boss order you COULD swap around would be Donna and Moreau which, at that point, why bother?

Most of the game, I didn’t feel much emotion for Ethan I’ll admit but that last scene after defeating the final boss got me pretty emotional and genuinely made me feel for Ethan, and in the end I really like how his story ended and I’m looking forward to what comes next, personally, I’m more hoping to see from Rose in the next RE instead of Chris but I’m a new fan from RE7 so I probably just sound like a new youth to the older fans of the series... which I am

He did, indeed, choose to present his feelings with the negative, contradictory vibe. The biggest issue for myself and many others is that in his own words, Jirard admits to going into this game believing it was something it wasn’t. So he doesn’t comment on what it is and what’s really in the game and his feelings on *that*, he constantly just laments how cool it coulda been if it was what he thought. Despite the game never stating it was anything remotely close to his assumptions. Even in other game reviews for things he hates, Jirard still describes those games accurately. This? Was not that.

Usually Jirard's right on when it comes to my feelings on the game he plays and the completion process for it. But listening to him go on and on about what Village could've been instead of what it is got real tiring real quick. Most of the game's strengths come from the influence it took from the rest of the series, and each part being its own unique thing makes it infinitely more replayable, to me at least. Going from carefully trying to survive a horde of enemies to a focused escape room section to a batshit insane boss fight are so varied and unique that I never got bored, even on my 4th playthrough to mop up achievements. You're absolutely entitled to your opinions, of course, but it sounds like you went into it with certain expectations, and then were let down when it turned out to be another Resident Evil game. Which, to be honest, it never advertised itself like it would be anything more than a sequel to VII. It's the equivalent of someone picking up Skyward Sword HD right now and being upset it's not as open or free as Breath of the Wild: It's not, but that's not where the strengths of the game lie. And to focus on that throughout the whole review is...just bizarre. Still, happy to see you had fun with Mercenaries! I'm hoping we get more stages when the DLC hits.

You keep talking about wanting more free exploration like a metroidvania, but to what end? Puzzles and items with no sense of progression because they all need to be balanced around getting picked up in any order? And unless every single cutscene gets remade 3 times, they would all have to get worse in order to be more flexible to be understood in any order? You lose too much for this freedom for freedom's sake, hurting the story in the process

I disagree. there are many ways around this like always having a scripted event after beating the first boss no matter what. for example, Ethan beats *blank* and on his way back to a central point he encounters a miniboss or a new character. or just imagine a police station or baker estate that's 2× the side instead of having to go to the lab or salt mines. you can very easily write a compelling story around these. obviously the game probably wouldn't be completely free exploration just like a metroid game isn't, but they could very easily make certain parts of an RE game be instead of going to let's say take care of Jack Baker, then Marguerite, followed by Lucas; to that in any order and you can have scripted encounters with things in between

This game does have very different themes, moods and gameplay elements but they didn't felt disjointed to me. I actually appreciated how different each area was to each other. I never knew what to expect which made me enjoy the game even more. It isn't a perfect game that's for sure, but even if you were wanting it to go on a different path, more like a metroidvania, I don't think it's bad that it stayed more faithful to a well established RE game. I agree that it would have been nice to go back to previous areas and being able to choose the order in which you tackle the bosses sounds like fun, it would have included a lot of replay value, but overall I was pretty happy with what we got. I won't disagree with you that there is a lot of potential for a lot more, but that's the beauty of it. As far as Chris Redfield, I saw his segment of the game as more of a break/relief for the player and a way to let off some steam from playing presumably conservative and careful (depending on difficulty) throughout the game. The only thing I wish they would've done was let the player complete the bosses in their own order, but aside from that I thought this game was great and I had a blast.

In my own personal opinion, to me i think its one of the best written resident evil games. It was beautiful, sad, fulfilling, and enjoyable ,and the way it creates its own world and connects to the world and lore of RE was awesome. I did have 2 major problems with the writing though, that still bugs me. SPOILERS! for the ending 1, Ethan denying Karl Hisenberg's offer to save Rose, Karl even though he may look like he was trying to kill Ethan at the start of the game, was the one who gave him a fighting chance. which allowed him to get as far as he did, Karl tries to reason with Ethan constantly and gives him like 4 separate chances and even when Hisenberg mutated and left he just told Ethan to stay out of the way. They both had the same objective, Karl working with Ethan and Maybe Chris could have avoided getting Ethan killed. So that felt not only off putting but like a dumb story choice. And even after hearing Hisenberg's backstory and motivation for killing Miranda, Ethan just calls him a freak which makes him feels different to the character he was in RE7 and the compassion he had to the Bakers and their backstory. And the worst part about all of this is that, the game's logic is "Ethan doesn't want roses powers to be used to stop Miranda, because he doesn't know the harm it can do to her." But by the end of the game, Rose's powers is used to stop Miranda and nothing happened to her, even after being ripped into 4 parts. Its all feels like it is unneeded, combined with the fact that Ethan already had Karl's flask... so he didn't even need to fight him. And 2... Chris Redfield and his Bad boy, police chief logic of don't get to close to me or this or you might get hurt. So many chances he could have just explained to Ethan what was going on giving him more insight and allowing Ethan to be more ready, for what happens next. Like during Moreau's level, Chris can see how far Ethan is in this, and he still choses to keep him in the dark, like a horse with blinders on. And what makes this worst is that not only does Chris's actions get Ethan killed... But the game itself calls out Chris's actions through his squad, who tells him that he should have told Ethan the truth. So its like which is it? It felt like the game was trying to have its cake and eat it too with Chris's logic and reasoning. It felt like cheap writing, and when the game basically turned into COD with Chris Redfield I almost put it down. The ending with Ethan and the twist of him being mold, salvaged these choices, and brought the story back up. But ultimately it just felt like 2 choices of writing that weren't needed, and overplayed its hand.

  • @whitehalo1277
    @whitehalo12772 жыл бұрын

With any review there will always be subjectivity in place. No avoiding that. The issue with this review is that it focused too much on what you wanted the game to be versus what it is. The main aspect that I do agree with you and that is objective is the following: "Resident Evil Village implemented multiple gameplay mechanics and tones." After this statement would come the whole review portion which would then be supported by the rest of the review. For example, "Resident Evil Village implemented multiple gameplay mechanics and tones some of which were executed perfectly while others fell short." For me personally, the Fish Lord, forgot his name, and the Chris portion, were the sections of the game where the game fell short. Each Lord centered around a major theme in horror: 1. Lady D was the return to form scary mansion with back tracking, ie Resident Evil 1 2. The Doll House focused more on puzzles and pure horror, ie no fighting back. The PT similarities are huge in this section, and for good reason. 3. The Factory focused more on action and the standard enemies becoming more advanced and weaponized, ie follows the same tone as the end of Resident Evil 4 and 5. The Fish lord section however just feels like the in-between section, it was just there. Not a bad section but severally lacking when compared to the others. The Chris section was the return to full on action, ie Resident Evil 6. And well, I don't think I need to explain why that part was just meh. Now for the Story, the Story was better than most of the Resident Evil stories as it had continuity. Ethan, trying to move pass the events from Resident Evil 7 that took place 3 years ago finds himself locked in a ritual involving his daughter Rose, a cultist village and their leader, Miranda, and a familiar face, Chris Redfield returns after some questionable acts. Basic setup and we have our cast of characters. Now where the story falls short is the Chris portion. Chris involvement in the story serves to create the mystery element behind the game as his actions, taken at first glance, would leave most people to question them. The reveal behind why he did what he did was weak at best and seemed more as a means of marketing the game than anything else. With all of this said, Resident Evil Village review: - Weak 3rd Act - Dragged out Mystery Element + Interesting characters + Interesting setpieces + Solid Resident Evil gameplay you'd expect. For a score, ill put it at a High 8.

"Chris could've been cut from the game entirely, and the game would've been the better for it." Nice hot take but that ain't it chief. Chris being in it makes sense because he and Ethan had a past, where Chris came to the rescue of not just Ethan but Mia. That's why it's such a shock in the beginning of the game when **Spoilers Ahead** Chris kills "'Mia". The shooting section where you play as him imo was fun as hell too, being able to just mow down enemies I'd been struggling with in the beginning was cathartic. Plus, Heisenberg's quote about "boulder-punching" was great. Just my two cents about that.

Probably the biggest issue is that your desire for the game to be a metroidvania was repeated and restated so much throughout the run time. I think you could have expressed that desire without it being hammered in over and over, and it would have come off much better. It ends up sounding like it ruined the whole game for you, rather than just something you hope could some day happen, and also lessens the impact of many of your later and better points, such as the tonal shifts/throwaway redfield/frontloaded horror.

Well, someone was in a bad mood when they played this... 🤣🤣🤣, you can have complaints about a game, when it is about what the game actually IS no what you want it to be, resident evil has always been pretty much B series movie turned into a game, which is what village is, and that's awesome, the differences between the lords are great, since they all have different personalities they have a different way to "torture" and play with ethan (my favourite being lady d and the doll house). Also, saying that ethan doesn't feel like a real person i feel is a wrong take on the character, yes, he doesn't much (near to nothing at all xd) but he still made us feel something with his story (or maybe it was just me but that's okay). Finally, ending the video by saying "what it could've been" is honestly a HORRIBLE way of ending a critique, and repeating it over and over throughout the video makes it even worse 🤦🏻‍♂️ Tbh i'm dissapointed with this video P. S. : if i had any mistakes while writing is bc i'm not a native english speaker so... Sorry about that xd

I’m trying to get S rank but that shit sucks.

I suppose I'm in the minority. I have liked the direction resident evil has gone since re7. Both that re2 remake have masterfully brought survival horror for the modern audience. Re3 remake could have done that as well, but despite its huge potential the execution was flawed and underwhelming. But thankfully re village put things back on the right track and I love how much variety and depth this game has. So yeah I've been pleased for the most part.

I’ve disagreed with you on some videos but, man, this one was so painful to watch because of how often it feels like you’re contradicting your own negative stances. Your opinions are your own and I’m sorry you didn’t feel what many people felt playing this game. But saying that Ethan’s reveal was a “retcon” is less about the game’s writing and more, maybe, a lack of your own memory of what happened in seven. I still love you but, really, major ooof.

I actually really liked Ethan's characterization in this game. Resi 7 was the game were Ethan was all "Holy fuck the hell is that!" to literally killing a house. In Resi 8 Ethan is just bloody tired of this shit. From getting his hand bit off, chopped off, ripped in half, and even getting his heart ripped out he's just having the worst day. Honestly if I was Ethan I'd be telling the crazy psychopathic Dr. Frankenstein rip-off to go fuck himself too. Think about he'd just got done staring down a fetus monster, killing a giant troll, killing a giant fish monster(again), and killing a literal dragon monster. Sure Heisenberg is a discount Magneto but at point Ethan is all out of fucks to give, probably thinking something along the lines of "Sure a giant fucking Nick Cage robot with a chainsaw, that might aswell happen too."
