My story was I did moonlighting for 1 year before I went into residency. Reasons: 1. I wanted a break from everything. I wanted to refocus my drive. I wanted to make time for myself, my family and friends. I travelled, found new hobbies that I never knew I liked. I am a huge supporter of taking breaks. Sabbaticals. Maraming benefits yun. It boosts productivity and recharges the mind. It is even encouraged in other industries, especially among the creatives. 2. Even though I knew I was going into Pediatrics, I knew I wasn't ready to go on long shifts. I was expecting the worst - not getting enough sleep/not sleeping at all, not eating on time, no bathroom breaks, not going home on time. True enough, my expectations got surpassed when I entered into training. Kaya I was surprised to hear some of our juniors threatening to quit because di na raw sila masaya sa department. I mean, no one really enters this place expecting to have fun right? We're here to learn. And learning requires willingness to make decisions and mistakes. 3. Di ko alam kung anong hospital ang gusto kong applyan. Was weighing all of my options. A lot of people were discouraging me from moonlighting, fearing that I will lose my drive to train. But I proved them wrong because I had a plan. Tayo lang naman ang makakapagsabi kung kelan tayo handa. Kasi we all know what happens pag napipilitan lang tayo and hindi natin gusto ang ginagawa natin. We will not survive. Basta in all decision making, always choose to grow. Growth requires patience, hard work, effort. My mom always used to say always pick the road less travelled/the harder road. So goodluck sa pipiliin niyong path in the future. I know you will make it as long as you put your mind and heart into it!

Hi po! I'm a grade 12 student for this school year and I'll be a first year college next year. I want to pursue Pediatrics but I don't know what pre-med course is the most suitable. I'm really bad at Mathematics and computations but I'm doing okay in other subjects and I excel particularly in English and Science (except physics and chemistry because it deals with formulas) and I can't help but to worry na baka hindi ko kayanin yung Math related stuff in college if ever. I am also not underestimating my mathematical ability, but only stating the obvious. I hope po na may maipayo po kayo sa akin because I need guidance. Thank you po!

Elai Byun I'm glad to know that you are interested in the field of Pediatrics. However, what you should know at this stage in your life is that there is no single premed course that prepares you for Pediatrics specifically. There are, however, courses that will prepare you well for Medical school as a whole. Generally speaking, you can be sure that all premed courses will include some form of advanced Mathematics and Sciences because it is a requirement before you are eligible to apply for Med school and even as soon as you apply for a National Medical Admission Test or an NMAT. It is the test to take to assess your readiness for medical school and is considered as the national med school entrance exam. Let's go back to your question regarding the premed to take that will best prepare you for medical school. I cannot help but to be biased because I am a UST MedTech graduate and a registered Medical Technologist aside from my medical license. So I think taking a premed that will also give you a professional license that exposes you to hospital will be good. These are BS MedTech, Pharmacy, Biochemistry/Chemistry, Nursing, Physical and Occupational Therapy, Sports Science. I personally chose BS MedTech from the recommendation of the UST OSA rep during our career orientation in highschool and I had no regrets. Basically, almost all of my 2nd year medicine lab subjects, I already took as a MedTech undergrad. It really helped me a lot during that time. Ultimately, all of these courses have their pros and cons. It's just that I can't speak for most of then. Anyway, goodluck in your journey and remember to take things one day at a time but it won't be bad to have a future plan for yourself. Just be flexible and not beat yourself up if ever you experience things that deviate from your plan. Pray and dedicate your intentions to God and He will help you succeed.

Never dreamt of becoming a doctor. In fact, I wanted to be a lawyer ever since I was a child. But here i am, chose to take a premed program for college as my preparation for med school. And ate aura, with all honesty, my dream of becoming a doctor blossomed when i started watching your vlogs. And even if i spent two years in shs under the ABM strand which highly focuses on businesses, I took the risk of applying for a science course this college to finally pursue medicine. Thanks for the inspiration doc! :)

I have friends who went moonlighting after passing the PLE even though they already knew what specialty they wanted to take just because they wanted to recharge, recuperate, and reward themselves.. Now they are Fellow / Consultants who still are at the top of their game. ^_^
