Congrats! Starting med school this fall and was wondering if you had any advice for a first year med student that wants to do PM&R.

Congrats on Med school! I would say if your program has a PM&R department, reach out and see if you can meet them and at least start to shadow. Then when it comes time to do a rotation they will already know you. If your school doesn’t have a department (like mine) see if any older students found opportunities nearby. PM&R is a very small field so making those connections is super important and you can start right away!

So my school doesn’t have a PM&R department, but there’s another school about an hour away from me that I would 100% want to attend for residency because it’s close to home. Do you think it’d be a good idea to email one of the residents (a few of them graduated from the med school I’ll be attending)? Maybe during third year of med school I’d be able to do an away rotation over there as well to maximize my chances of matching into that specific program and also get a LOR from someone there?

MajorEuowii Sounds like an awesome plan! Definitely reach out to a resident, let them know that not only are you interested in PM&R, but that you like their program specifically. Stay in touch with them and Try to shadow, but even if you can’t, when 3rd year comes around they will remember how interested you were!

It’s an intern year program. The Mayo residency I got is 3 years but physical medicine and rehab requires 4 total years of training so I had to pair it with an intern year!
