Researching Psychedelics and DMT with Rick Strassman

Rick Strassman, MD, is an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico. He is author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule -- A Doctor's Revolutionary Research Into the Biology of Near-Death and Mystical Experiences, Inner Paths to Outer Space: Journeys to Alien Worlds Through Psychedelics and Other Spiritual Technologies, and DMT and the Soul of Prophecy: a New Science of Spiritual Revelation in the Hebrew Bible. He has also authored a novel titled Joseph Levy Escapes Death.
Here he describes the process of setting up a program to research the psychedelic drug, DMT, at the University of New Mexico. It took two years to obtain the required permissions, as there had been a twenty year hiatus in psychedelic research on human subjects. He describes the many precautions required for such research. He also discusses, in great detail, the stages of a DMT experience. Half of his research participants described communication with intelligent, autonomous entities while in an ostensible out-of-body state.
New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is a past vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology; and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that Association for his contributions to the field of human consciousness exploration.

    What if it's not a parallel universe one experiences with psychedelics-- what if it's simply a heightened experience of this universe, aka- this reality? This is important because mainstream physics likes to throw around parallel universes almost like a religious narrative requiring faith. If however we arrived at the realization that our one actual reality was so much more profound than we ever imagined.... THAT would be transformative and revolutionary!

    El Soil Remember Epictetus, what disturbs our minds are not events, but what we think about them. During incubation for healing, you would go to a dark cave or temple and wait for dreams to lead one to healing. Sometimes just having a dream was inspiring enough to heal. Placebo effect most likely. The dreams were believed to come from the gods which I have come to see as our emotions. We must venture into the depths with focus. A lost art on the comeback. I feel psycadelics can also simulate the cave more vividly. A great tool for self mastery and reflection. Know Thyself. I don’t make anything spiritual out of it. This is the way it is. We have a shared unconscious and a species memory accessible.

I've had psychedelic experiences without substance, including one with morphing objects Terrence describes those elves singing into existence. In my experience those objects represent events in time from a hyper dimensional reality. I'd created a line of these morphing objects that then brought about a series of events in my life over 6 months. It was wild cause I didn't believe it would all actually happen until after it happened. Needless to say i'm too chicken shit for DMT. haha

    DMT is a super placebo, this is a good one. I like it. Excellent interview. Edit: I disagree with Rick on the legality of it, it should be legal, how dare any government or corporation dictate what I should ingest in my own body. It's very bad karma to deny others their own free will, this debt will be re-payed. As for the Huxley's quote on "E-lites", I never knew this and I am very disappointed honestly.

  • @dragoraan7247

    @dragoraan7247

    @Myth Tree Right, well they are barley being responsible for sick and crazy people as it is, so it's hard to believe that one. Especially in the good ole US of A, where all the "E-lites" love to work and play:) One of my favorite Bill Hicks quotes, recently heard it: “The world is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. The ride goes up and down, around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly colored, and it's very loud, and it's fun for a while. Many people have been on the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, "Hey, is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, "Hey, don't worry; don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride." And we … kill those people. You see, Billy over here nailed it on the head, they have a lot invested in their "rides", to me, this is it right here my friend. Can't have anyone noticing, DMT sure does help doesn't it? It's just a ride man, no need to nuke each other into oblivion for it, let's explore the galaxy together united as a whole family, lets protect the earth and make sure her abundance is shared properly and fairly. That's just to scary for some of us, isn't it? BOO ha ha ha

  • @dragoraan7247

    @Myth Tree Well I disagree, it's not to turn you into a socialist, more to accept the oness of reality, that we all share this planet together. It's unfortunate that you insist on a label imported from your culture. As for your casualties, would we have them if this was legal and we had treatment options developed for these individuals? Like we do with alcohol and other legal drugs? I think it would have. Agree to disagree, and it's to bad that someone who has taken entheogens is against their legalization. How disappointing TBH.

  • @dragoraan7247

    @dragoraan7247

    @Myth Tree Like I said, I disagree, and I find your comment here pretty surprising, to bring up ancients and brahmin murderers, and say that the drugs are the reason for their barbarity is clearly misguided. As for your anecdote on a "chaotic guy", well are we going to blame the chemicals he's ingesting or his surrounding environment he's attempting to numb himself from? All I wan't is to be free to explore my consciousness on my own terms without a government or corporation telling me what is and isn't acceptable. Maybe I'm being impatient with the blindness of our cultures and what we seem to focus on, doubt it though. Cheers.

    *@Casiana Feliz* yes you can get man-made DMT in a Vape pen. I’ve never tried it myself, though from my studies it produces the same result. It’s all about the dose. Chemists can make any molecule, some are harder than others. DMT is actually really really simple compared to a lot of drugs. You can’t make it at home, but a professional industrial chemist could make this stuff by the gallon.

I really want to try ketamine therapy or Micro-Dosing buy have no income other than the SSI i was awarded 2 years ago because due to PTSD that keeps me from leaving my apartment. I'm in Lubbock TX is there any sort of research studies or micro-dose Dr's out here? Im all but jumping off the freeway at this point and no matter how many Merkabah Meditation or spirit science videos I watch, my ability to generate an inner feeling of joy/enthusiasm remains obsolete. I have No circadian rythem and often stay awake past 48 hrs in hopes of inducing a Manic episode. Seriously. Extreme ways. Have my years of psyche meds destroyed my biological equipment? I cant use external things to fix internal issues...but what if I blew out my own light-body? Can that happen? Should I ask the party house down the street for a rave drug hook-up or acid or something? I already stand by metal poles in lightning storms. Hi. Don't know take any psychedelics, ever, without knowing what you are taking.. buy a test kit. There are some rather deadly chems out there that are being used as replacements for safer psychs such as real LSD. That and antidepressants used together is never ever good. I'm sure you know. My question is, wat are you looking for ? What is the thing you want the most?

    If I was in your situation I would taper off slowly with the Kratom without going into too much withdrawal. If the withdrawal is too uncomfortable go slower or get some good quality cbd oil to help relax. Also mix up the Kratom types. Stay away from reds, do white one week and green the next. Since you are under a dr for antidepressants talk about going off them slowly or getting milder forms for now. Whatever you do stay away from acid for now which could put you over the edge. I've heard micro dosing on mushrooms have helped with moods plus micro dosing gives you an idea of how your body reacts to it without having a full blown bad experience. Juicing on raw fruits and vegetables help detox and produce healing effects. Research everything throughly before you try anything on your own. You are still young enough your body can heal. Be patient with yourself.

    Science, the materialistic kind, tries to tell us that consciousness is a chemical process but that's plain wrong. It is both spiritual first and secondly the effect of that first impulse, on the physical body/brain activity. If concsiousness is a product of the brain itself, what causes the activity of the brain during sleep when we are unconcsious of our surrounding ? Shouldn't our brains be on standby/asleep ?

    I hope you have Dr. Strassman back on the show again shortly. My only criticism of this episode is that you spent way too much time talking about basic protocol and physiological stuff, all of which already exists in the experiment details. I doubt that most people interested in these experiments are too drawn to whether or not someone registered the blood pressure cuff at 2 or 5 minutes. They are drawn to questions such as whether DMT taps into some aptitude of mind or some potential space of mind that is not accessible in ordinary consciousness, and whether a collective empirics for such spaces could in any sense be established. They are interested in whether "DMT beings" are real or imaginary, or at least in a depthful exploration of that question. So, a bit of a missed opportunity I think. But with a second interview, all of that can be repaired.

    At 41:00: anal rape by crocodiles would be terrifying for anyone. I don't blame that research subject one little bitty bit on that one. No, I don't see how that could be interpreted to be a pleasant experience at all. Hope they weren't traumatized long term. Seems that is a risk with substances of this nature. Dr. Strassman's DMT book is on the short list I have of favorites in the last twenty years. Thanks for posting!

    INFAMOUSSPADE37m So, I decided to try DMT for the first time, after studying about people's experiences. The limited, but promising research done about psychedelics also intrigues me as well. So a friend helped me with my first time. I took a 60 mg hit and absolutely nothing happened. My friend did one and said he didn't blast off, but saw some cool visuals. At this point we were debating the product its self and I decided to try one more time. This time I heard ringing and I though to myself "hear we go" and i laid back. I sat there for a moment and realized that I had complete control of my body. I opened my eyes and I could see around the room like nothing was going on. I shut my eyes and I could now see what looked to be binary, but running diagonally, instead of like the matrix. At this point I saw a vague face emerge from them that looked sort of like the drama masque or a jester. At this point I laughed and felt pretty good, but it started to fade. I opened my eyes again and i could still see around the room. When I shut them the binary was still there and I heard or telepathically heard whatever, "no good, come back", but it was very gleeful. I tried to push through or to see more and heard laughing, but not in a bad way. More like when you fail at something and your friends encourage you to try again I guess. Anyway, did I have weak dmt? Surely the dosage was adequate. Has anyone experienced this before or something similar before?

    @Sameul Brooks like nature around us consists of a balance of opposites nl. day/night etc... so does the human experience a b of o in that he sacrifices his braincells up in exchange for awareness ; something in us must die to expierence life in the full sense of the word. And that is the pain we feel in the head if we really have to concentrate hard for a long period. The point is really that awareness is a spiritual not a chemical process.

    no, he's saying there's sth in psychedelics, may it be god, or being released from your physical mind so u can pay attention to the realm of spirits. (if it exists) and he has his reasons, bc studying the people who have been through dmt, and specially ajahuaska many have their lives changed and this can not be put away. this needs to be addressed as a new way for man to find peace and all. I personally don't believe in a higher world in terms of spirits and god, but if the journey u get by using these drugs is harmless and can even change your life, it's worth at least knowing more about it. In great scale ot could save lives and bring order to society.
