Researcher Explains Why Cats May Like Their Owners as Much as Dogs | WIRED

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Cats are famously temperamental and are generally considered to be less loyal and social than dogs. But recent research suggests that cats actually have similar levels of attachment to their human caregivers as dogs and infants. WIRED's Arielle Pardes spoke with Kristyn Vitale from Oregon State University's Human-Animal Interaction Lab to find out more.

And that’s the sad truth. Why not go ahead and compare a dog’s behaviour to a rabbit while they’re at it? Or maybe a horse? Or a fish? If people just learnt how to understand each animal’s own unique language, they can discover so much! I’m glad you agree.

Or else they are generalizing a bad experience. I mean, some cats are definitely mean and spoiled, and others apply their territorial aggression to humans they don't know. In both cases a person who has not bonded with a normal cat might get the wrong idea about cats in general.

It’s nice that they addressed that cats will have different personalities. My older cat is not a cuddly cat. Her owner was going to give her away because she wasn’t cuddly enough. I took her because you can’t just do that to an animal. It’s like trying to give away your own child because they didn’t turn out as smart or as generally happy as you would like. Each cat displays their affection in different ways as long as you take time to learn and give them their own space

My grandma complains that my cat doesn't show her affection, doesn't come when called or let her rub her belly. She's so acustomed to dog behavior that cat behavior is so alien to her. When Im sitting at my desk, my cat will walk uo and rub herself against my leg and let me scratch her behind the ears. She's not a cuddler either but we're learning to understand each other. Now a days she lows me to kiss her forhead, even if for a couple of seconds, and im sure to be gentle and soft since she gets easily anxious. She also purrs when i pet her while she eats. So yeah, cats give affection in different ways. Doesn't mean it's not love.

I got so tired of my dads obsession, he loves the dog more than his own human family. Ive seen dog women on facebook adoption pages, harrass and bully women whos dogs showed aggression to their small children and were trying to get rid of the dog for the children's safety. Im single and the amount of dudes who own dogs write "I love my dog" "looking for mother figure for my dog" "dont bother if you dont like dogs" okay... to the left then. I cannot bother. Dog moms are probably even worse. I watch "I hate dogs" youtube channel frequently to remind myself of the troubles with dogs and dog ownership.

Dead man's answers People need to realize that you can’t treat cats like you treat dogs. They’re more cautious. They have personal space. Cues that you need to understand in order to understand how a cat is feeling. You can’t try to pet a cat who is lashing their tail because “dogs wag their tails when they’re happy” and then get angry when they bite or claw you.

It's actually not hard to _earn_ a cat's affection. Whether it's your cat, a friend's cat, a stray cat, or just some random cat you've never seen before, if a cat likes you, it's going to be affectionate towards you. It's not hard to earn that affection if you respect it. Cats can sense when someone is kind and gentle, just like how humans can sense when someone is kindhearted and a good person.

my parents still favor dogs even after almost 20 years having cats. after raising my own, i realized just how much they had no clue what they were doing. they would see scratching posts as unsightly and yet, complain when they scratched their recliners. so they declawed them causing them pain for their lives and one of them to have litter box issues which resulted in that cat being euthanized for "behavior issues". he was also highly unfavored by my extroverted family members for being too "scared, shy and aloof". they would throw toys as if the cats were dogs. they would complain about the crazy running up and down the stairs (yes because if you dont engage with them the correct way they will do that) and the smell of litter and would never give them wet food bc of the smell and overfeed on dry causing obesity and diabetes. some people should just not own cats if theyre gonna have biases and be willfully uneducated.

as i think about this further, i dont want to demonize my parents but they were kind of abusive at times. not just to my cats but to me as well. the whole euthansia thing gave me a great deal of trauma because they took him right out of my arms to take him to the vet. and when i looked in their faces, there was no semblence of them there. just anger. my mom then asked why i didnt go with after she came back as i was whailing my eyes out, having a full on panic attack...why would i want to go to see my cats premature death???? i had endless nightmares that would shake me so hard and i still believe now 7 years later that this has fundamentally changed me mentally at my core. the worst of it all was my other cats painful crying at night. i can still hear it haunting me. i know theyre "just cats" and everyone goes through a death at some point but i still dont understand why it was and is so violent in my head. my other cat is actually getting very old now, and everytime my dad brings up him leaving us, idk if its just an implanted thought in my head but i just think hes purposely making me relive it all again. ahh im getting too personal. (btw theyve slowly after the incident tried to learn a little more but are still not regretful of what theyve done and still favor dogs way more. so i dont think theyre gonna adopt any more cats any time soon thank god) but honestly, theres a lot of things about animals we dont understand. but one thing we should all understand is that anger should not belong in these kinds of relationships. my parents often yelled at our pets, and i believe their anger along with their ignorance caused many of these problems. cats are not people. they deserve an owner who tries to understand them and treat them the way cats need to be treated. with patience and willingness to learn.

update: my other cat is dead. my parents put him down after 16 years because he had diabetes and was losing too much weight and hair. i am beyond depressed but it does help feeling like this time around there was a legitimate reason (old age and diabetes). its easier when i can tell myself that i dont want him to suffer anymore. he could barely walk. but of course my mom still is emotionally distant about it. not comforting me or giving me any reassurance. just "hey you wanna say goodbye?" i knew all this time she hated having them but this comment really puts it into perspective. all she thought of them was a burden she can finally let go of. it just sickens me so much. im trying to be there for my 2 year old cat though and it helps knowing i can treat him better than my parents ever treated me or my best friends. rip max and tiger

@@elizabethosborne9059 some tips for interacting with strange cats! first is let them come to you. when they do, you can slowly hold a finger out toward them, stopping a few inches shy of their nose, and let them get closer to sniff you. they will either sniff then pull back, in which case you should leave them alone and wait for them to approach you again for another try, or they'll push their nose against your finger, in which case you can use that finger to rub their cheeks or chin - just make sure you let the cat guide where it wants you to touch it, and don't try to keep going if it pulls back. if the cat gets into it then you can try going for a full-hand pet, scratching their ears or stroking their head. Stick to the head until they're comfortable around you, most cats actually don't like full-body petting (it riles them up). in general with cats you just need to take it slow and let them lead the interaction. and also be patient, some cats can be skittish and will come sniff, run off, and come back to investigate and sniff again multiple times before they finally let you touch them for more than half a second. i have a cat who is like this, with her you just have to accept that you're probably gonna get 1 good pet per interaction and nothing more, lol. but you can also just...play with them. ask their owner if they've got a wand toy and try getting the cat interested in playing. this is a good way to get a cat to warm up to you, in addition to giving you a way to interact with them. i was able to form a very strong bond with a notoriously unfriendly cat just by being the only person who played with him on a daily basis, so it works.

@@elizabethosborne9059 Frankly (and @Guindo, The gave good comments here already), the fact that you don't go to pet them immediately means you're halfway there. Patience and knowing what *not* to do are basically the key to winning a cat's affection. Pet lightly, always go head-to-tail in terms of direction (with the grain of their fur), and I'd avoid really using your palm at all. The bottom of their back (right in front of their tail), their hips, and their head area (neck, chin, behind the ears, top of the head) are the sweet spots generally. Belly pets - really depends on the cat, but they generally need to trust you first. Kind of a cheat code, at least with both of my cats, is where their ears join the top of their head. Really hard area for them to reach as accurately/easily as we can, they'll melt lol

Offer your hand like you're another cat offering to sniff noses, and wait for them to pet _you._ If they want to be petted, they'll show you where by rubbing it against you. After that, you're basically good. But unless you know the cat well, I'd recommend not doing full body pets, since it can be pretty overstimulating for some.

2 months late on that comment, but cats hardly "love" anything or anyone. There have been multiple studies to prove it, so I can understand dog people as you called them to be upset over someone bringing dogs to the same level of those uncaring felines. Not saying cats are evil or bad or anything of this sort, just stating that what you, and many other people say about your pets is untrue. What i mean to say is your cat doesn't care about you, and most likely never will, as it is for the most part a solitary creature that generally doesn't form a secure attachment to their owners. Most studies show that dogs produce 5 times the love hormone of cats when bonding with someone so whatever was said about them being equal is a load of crap. Have you ever considered why there is a such a thing as a "service dog" even if it is a very small breed, but service cats somehow don't make the mark? That's because training cats to keep humans safe is near impossible. Before you go full furry fiesta on me I'd like you to know that I own both cats and dogs, don't mistreat them and love them equally, but I can still tell the obvious difference in their attachment.

I think because people base it off dog behavior. Cats are usually more subtle in their expression, especially when compared to dogs who jump all over you. However, cat owners understand their behavior. My parents have a cat who is just totally obsessed with my dad. She loves him so much, and when he leaves to go to the store or do stuff outside she wanders the house meowing and looking for him. Even today he got in the shower and she went and found my mom and started yelling at her like "What did you do with him? Where is he?" I think cats are just more secure in their attachments to humans and know they don't have to go overboard showing it.

Yes. My parents in law hate cats and they say that cats are mean, selfish and are not (clingy) like dogs. I've heard multiple dog people that think that cats just use their owners to get food. They obviously don't know how sweet and attached cats can be to their humans 😍

4:20 I am (a little) disappointed in this response. I think majority of why ppl think cats are mean is because they are expecting cats to be dogs, period. I love all kinds of animals, so I am not saying cats are better than dogs. Neither will I say dogs are better than cats. People don't expect horses or pigs to behave like dogs.. but cats are expected to have many dog-like behaviors. And very much like in the movie series -- How To Train Your Dragon ..it is important to earn the cat's trust, before you can earn the cat's love. Dogs (being the angels they are) are a lot more generous with this trust and love. But once you earn a cat's trust.. and eventually their love -- it is frikking precious, and worth all the time and effort! So -- don't be lazy, learn cats ...learn about THIS particular cat. And don't expect cats to be dogs, or even other cats.

But if new people ignore her first and just be in the room for awhile, she will eventually rub herself on their legs and let them pet her. Interesting is that she behaves like that even if they offer her treats. Also she doesnt like loud people. She kinda behaves like me when i meet new people :/

This is so true. Sure, it is not hard to earn a cats trust but cats are much more honest than humans. That said, you can misread a cat and they can't always tell you gently when they had enough. Dog are much simpler creatures, they are herd animals hardwired for a strict social order and humans know how to exploit that. Cats are more independent the same way healthy humans are. Independent as in still appreciating the company of others, at least some of the time. And since cats sleep or snooze most of the day, that means they can be _vary_pushy when they wake up and need interaction.

We really shouldn't speak of humans "owning" cats. The cat certainly doesn't see it that way. People who complain that their cat hasn't bonded with them need to remember that bonding is a two-way street. What are YOU doing to bond with the cat?

Listen, I'm friendly to a fault. I love other people. But if a stranger came up to me, started touching my face, rubbing my stomach, and pulling at me roughly, I'd be pretty mad. I don't think that's mean or "aloof".

Not just cats. I think it's the same for everyone. Animal & people. I wonder how much money they have spent on this lab for the main reason of "helping owners understand their cats better." When most, if not every, cat owner knows very well how our cat feels about us. For anyone who is paying attention, kitties make it pretty clear how they feel. Give that money to a cat shelter or something. PS. I think you're great, Massimo. Lots of love to give.

if your cat is on it's back exposing it's belly, you have a friend for life. that is a sign that they trust you implicitly as they are exposing their most vulnerable spot, their belly. i walk upstairs, and my tuxedo cat plops on the floor and rolls on his back, the other two are more aloof about it.

Firstly I LOVE both cats and dogs, both are fantastic, I mean what kinda sociopath would hate an innocent animal? But I think cats get a bad rap because they acquire more "attention". But I actually like that about cats. I think they mimic humans more closely than dogs. If you ran up to a stranger on the street and started petting them, playing with them, hugging them, they would probably be weirded out and uncomfortable. That's kinda how I see cats. They take more time to build a bond than dogs (not always the case but a generalization) but ONCE you spend the time with a cat and earn their love/trust. It's like the greatest reward in the universe.

i feel stupid for saying this but i always assumed that if a cat liked someone then they would sort of act like a dog; meow a lot, cling to them, always want to be pet, etc. i now have a cat of my own and i’m learning that just because she doesn’t want to be held constantly doesn’t mean she hates me.

I owned a Birman cat for over eighteen years. He would be behind the door meowing waiting for me. If I went next door to my neighbour for a cup of tea, he would meow at her door. Any visitors, he would ask for attention; everyone loved him and it really did break my heart when I finally had to say “goodbye”.

I moved out 4 years ago and my two cats who live with my mom will still go crazy whenever I visit. They clearly not only recognize me but are also happy. You can especially see this with our girl that is one of those cats that will hide at least for a few minutes when someone visits but she NEVER does that with me ever. She recognises me before she can even see me. My other two cats who live with me are also very affectionate.

This video is basically “prove to me cats aren’t mean” over and over again. I learned the “hard” aka awesome way that cats are actually cute and cuddly amazing pets by owning one. My baby is so sweet and playful, but also yes, I have to leave him be when he doesn’t want to be held or play with me and I’ve learned those vocalizations and his body language. Also a lot of owners I’ve known over my life never told me that the reason they’d be all scratched up isn’t because their cats are evil lol. It’s because they’re just so playful and love being all over you and if they don’t get their regular trim it’s gonna inevitably cause some scratching. Scared me out of having one for so long!

When our female cat plays with us she keeps her claws retracted if her paws touch bare skin. If she touches us on our clothes though ger claws can be out. It is as though she thinks clothing is our für that gives us some protection so it's OK to have those claws out.
