RESCUING FREE TRASH PLANTS: overwatered Hoyas, repotting, plant shop day in the life, huge new fern!

Ойын-сауық

Join me for some houseplant care and rehab! I rescued some free hoya plants from the plant shop where I work. These sad and overwatered hoyas aren’t going to save themselves!🧚✨ Watch me dig through the trash like a raccoon to look for free plants 🦝🤦‍♀️
One of my favorite perks of working in a plant shop is attempting to rescue extremely sad plants and being able to save them sometimes😊💞
PLANT CHORES: EPISODE 9 - HOYA RESCUE EDITION
0:00 plant shop life (+finding plants to save hehe)
3:21 my new big fern! :)
5:52 easy DIY disposable paper potting tarp
7:03 overwatered hoya carnosa compacta
13:27 weird hoya kentiana variegata
19:09 hoya compost salad pot
23:03 bonus footage: my dog slowly falling asleep sitting up
What plants have you successfully or unsuccessfully tried to rescue? What’s your biggest rescue success story (or saddest failure if you're inclined to share)?? Do you like trying to rescue plants or do you not find it worthwhile? (That's cool too! As a lover of perfection, I can get down with the idea of a struggle-plant-free collection) 🏹💖✨
I also just want you all to know that I washed those cuttings from the compost as soon as I got home with them but forgot to mention it in the video😬
Some topics in this video:
Hoya carnosa compacta, Hoya kentiana variegata, Hoya wayetii variegata, variegated hoya, how to save an overwatered plant, how to tell if a plant is overwatered or underwatered, over or under watered plants, moldy hoya, spots on hoya kentiana, working in a plant shop, plant shopkeeper, taking plants out of the compost, how to save a dying plant, potting cuttings together, repotting hoya, making an easy DIY potting tarp, the joy of rescuing plants 🥳
There are so many plant care tasks to tackle and so many fun observations to share when you have over 300 houseplants and keep bring home more - someone always needs something or has exciting new growth (or needs serious help)! 💜 Let's do some plant care 🌿💪🥳🧽🌿✨

Omg my friend and I also worked at a plant shop and went "dumpster diving" everytime we emptied the trash on Sundays 😂🪴 We would salvage any plants that were tossed but still look like they have life in them and called ourselves the plant ICU 🥰 after we healed up the plants we'd take some to plant shares or even gift them to friends. I love this video so much! The store you work at looks beautiful too 😍

@@soft.jungle ooh I still do this sort of thing today with clearance plants from big box stores! Most of the time these plants end up in clearance because they have too many yellow or brown leaves. I always check to make sure there aren't any pests in the plants or soil. I imagine what the plant would look like if I took off all the dying leaves and if it seems salvageable from that, then I go for it 😁

I’m so glad you enjoyed this video!!🥰 Normally I never get to bring home a haul like this with multiple big plants because I try my best to care for the plants that still have life in them and make them sellable (and by the time they’re free for me, they’re usually too damaged to bother with😅) But a lot of my plant collection consists of plant shop rehabs from the past few years, so maybe I’ll make a video showing some of those from past rescues and where they are now. Thanks so much for your enthusiasm and for the suggestion!!🤩☺️💜💜💕✨

I like to 'save' overwatered plants just like that, pop em out of their pot and onto a folded up bath towel. That gets the water out fast, and can give it a dry towel second day if it is still soggy. If the soil/rootball wants to fall apart, you can put the plant and towel into a basin that can hold it. Seems like Lowes' purchases need this pretty often! I enjoy your channel, especially saving plants....

Doing a nice airy potting mix is good for drainage and air flow. When soil is too dense you are likely to get root rot when is not properly drain at each watering. All my plants i use cactus and succulents mix and add orchard bark and perlite for more of a chunky mix.

Funny that these are the 2 hardest hoyas I've encountered and I have 100+ hoyas. 😅 I've killed 2 compactas so far. 😰 I find that the wayettii/kentiana IS very susceptible to root rot and dry rot. I wish you're able to save them both. 🥰

thanks for telling me this!! I’m so sorry that they’ve been hard for you but I feel reassured about these plants now. 100+ hoyas!!!!🤩 that’s so amazing, are you mainly a hoya person or have lots of other plants too? thanks so much for watching and sharing your experience 🥰😊💜💜💜✨

@reallybigplant I have lots of other plants too. I just upped my hoya game in 2021 after not buying plants for almost a year due to lockdown. 😅 I love your videos and I love your energy. I feel like you're genuinely a good human person and will be a very nice friend. 🥰🥰🥰

Every time I see a big var. kentiana it always look kind of rough with burn/weird brown damage like you showed. It looked sooo much better after you worked on it. Good luck!

My Hoya wayetii also has those spots I’ve tried treating them with neem oil and later alcohol they don’t seem to be spreading, already had the spots when I opened my order thought it would probably die, making a lot of new leaves currently. I’m monitoring the new leaves for the same spots, fingers crossed it’s just some weird old damage, I thought they were insects at first.

Loved the video! Just wanted to point out that Hoya kentiana variegata is incredibly rare in the houseplant community. The plant you're saving is a Hoya wayetii variegata and it's beautiful! The two are really commonly misidentified/mislabeled.

I found a crimson princess at lowes. Roots look super healthy and the plant looks very healthy overall. My concern is...they really watered it like alot before I got there. It wasn't sitting long because I was at the store the day before and it wasn't there. Will it die from them saturating the soil a lot once? Had it a few days but pot is still heavy af obviously. I have experience with a lot of different plants but never owned a hoya (have a lot of healthy happy plants in my home). Hoyas scare me a bit. If anyone can maybe help me that would be much appreciated! Ty! I do have a 8in terracotta pot that is the same size as the plastic nursery pot. Should I transfer it to that?
