Rescuing/Building a MASSIVE Warhammer Necron Army

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This week I finally pulled out every Necron model I have and made an army. This Massive pile of plastic, some painted, and some new in box, was kindly donated to the channel, and it's finally time to get everything out and do something about it! This was an undertaking, and I almost didn't finish this video in time, but here we are, and I'm ready to put some metallic spooky minis on the table!
A Huge thank you to Dale for donating these and other excellent minis, and to my friend Beau for coming by and helping me actually get it done!

I have to say Painting with others is the greatest. Its why I love having a wife who is also in the hobby. We've been busy of late so not much painting but last time we went to visit my parents this spring we both took a kill team project with us and some paint and worked on painting at nights after our son (4) was in bed while watching TV with my mom and dad. I got basically 75% of a Death Guard roster finished and then finished up the last 25% at home afterwords and my wife got maybe 40% of her blooded done but her paint scheme was much more complicated than mine is why that happened.

I think people go in phases of what they consider "not pro" techniques, or "only for beginners". Drybrushing is amazing and can do so much work for army painting. Honestly anyone who says a technique is bad, or not as good as something else is just trying to gatekeep the hobby. Airbrushing goes through the same kinds of ups and downs, some people resort to calling it cheating, I think drybrushing is in the same kind of camp.

Dry brushing is actually a bit tricky to get right... Most people do it wrong (I would say at least 80%) and it makes the results very inconsistent. You have to balance the level of moisture and paint exactly right, which takes a lot of practice to learn.

Whenever I buy used minis off Ebay, and I do fairly regularly, the two biggest issues I run into are bad gluing and over-priming. I pretty much expect to have to take apart, (Unless it is hopelessly superglued or cemented) strip the paint, clean mold lines, and then reassemble and paint. The bane of my existence is the overuse of that GW plastic cement or having to chisel off layers of superglue. Then there's over-priming. LA's Totally Awesome works great on most paints, but has hit or miss affect on primers. And I'm talking to the point where it obscures detail and nothing short of 90% rubbing alcohol will dissolve it. I'm sure you also have your tough cases.

There have been quite a few tough cases on the channel. Sometimes you just get unlucky and have to put in the work to cut away glue and work extra hard to get most of the primer off. The sonic cleaner does help quite a bit, but for the really tough ones I usually end up painting them to match whatever damage the model has, to try and hide the worst of it. Battle damage goes a long way if there are things you can't actually fix. Otherwise I'll try and replace parts and convert the model to get around that stuff. You never know what will be under that paint, but I have to say that most of the models I have gotten on ebay have been on the better side of things, even with lots of paint covering everything.

This video makes me wanna talk about my necrons. So I will. I imagined mine being interred on a tombworld that over the 1000s of years they were intombed became this lush tropical paradise, the issue? The tombs are now under water and so parts of the tomb got flooded. My thoughts was since the Necrons ran on a caste system the basic troops ended up getting flooded while the vehicles had a bit more defense and the overlords or higher had the most. When they awakened they climb up out of the salty ocean water and begin to rust, well the infantry anyways. So I painted them up as terminators at first then i added ruse like "oooooooh this will be fun" and and the rust itself is random too!

The glow effect does look pretty great and I'm biased towards blue and the classic green too. That said and as I'm sure you know, it does seem pretty fast and dirty. Still successful, especially in such a short amount of time, but some of the heroes and vehicles could use another pass and that's a job for another day. Personally, I'd make all their symbology dark gold and add a layer of rust wash in the non-glowing joints to make it feel like they rose up out of the ground.

My son chose Necrons and I’m going to be painting almost as many as you did. I’m basing them with Runelord Brass and dry brushing a silver with purple for the effects. He likes the scheme so I’m glad about that. One thing though, was the Silent King missing? I saw his pedestal, but not him or his servants.

That first army feeling never really goes away! luckily I still have most of mine, some have been lost through the years, but still. I've been using the H&S Infinity CR+, specifically the Angel Giraldez model. But if you're looking to jump in and start learning then you would do well to look at a Badger Patriot 105. That's been a very nice brush for me for the last few years and I always recommend it to anyone who wants to start airbrushing.

This was a big one for sure! The airbrush was great. No need for breaks really. Each section was maybe at most 90 minutes of work. So it never got too hot or started to have any issues. I did need to clean the brush probably every 15 minutes, just from the amount of paint that was going through it, but the H&S brushes are super easy to clean out, so it was never too big of an issue. The metallic paint gave me the most trouble, but the high flow paint and inks weren't too bad.

I've got some kind of tutorial in the works, not sure when it will be done, but the program is Photoshop. Just bring in a picture of a grey mini and then create a color layer over the top to brush on whatever color you want. It definitely works really well for visualizing colors, even if it's not super close to the end result :)

Soooo, looking at your background I was wondering if those walls are chalkboard painted walls. If they are, cool, if not I'd think it would be fun if you did that. Especially if you would then let your kids draw on them. It would liven up the background and make them feel like a part of your videos/channel/hobby.

Great video and love the paint scheme, I haven't painted necrons in a while, I need to add some to my to do stash, question though how is it your still using a paper towel to wick off paint for your dry brushing? I had thought youd be using a texture palette. Also how is the finger, I see your using it but still with a plaster, that just a protective measure?

  • @eBayMiniatureRescues

    @eBayMiniatureRescues

    10 ай бұрын

Thanks! The new Necron models are super cheap these days and definitely worth picking up. Really fun to paint too! The old paper towel for the drybrush still works for me, no need for a texture palette. I've also heard that having one of those can actually make your drybrushing go bad. The paint builds up over time on the surfaces of the palette and you end up getting dust and particles from old work into your drybrush without realizing it. That logic makes enough sense for me not to make one of my own. The finger is much better, thank you for asking! But, still not fully healed. The bandage is honestly there to cover it up for the camera lol, and to protect it to a certain extent, but it would be bad to show in a video so It will stay covered up until it's finally good to go. Painting is much better though, I can at least use the tip of my finger to steady the brush!

@@eBayMiniatureRescues great to hear about the finger, no need to take unnecessary chances, and the texture palette you have to prime it before use, I picked up one cheap off Ebay but find myself using it and paper towel out of habit lol. I highly recommend watching this video from my friend Brent over at Goobertown, he put together one of the best beginner painting guides out there. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qGF2zriSdtvMgqQ.html Second, and it's a bit shameless, check out the Paint Bravely the Podcast, it might have some good nuggets in there that will help :) www.youtube.com/@paintbravelythepodcast I hope those things help! Just keep trying new things and remember that it's just paint. You can always strip it off and try again!

Hello Casey, I would like to ask what solvent do you use with your ultrasonic cleaner? I'm still tootbrushing my secondhand minis after an isopropyl alcohol bath, but this week i've decided that i will buy an ultrasonic cleaner. Though I'm not sure what solvent need to fill it up, some web pages claimes with destilled water, some with a mixture of 50% vinegar+50% water+few drops of washing liquid. Now my head is in full chaos, and i would like to ask a professional before i make something stupid. (many sources claimed do not use IPA for ultrasonic cleaner) Can you help me out with an advice? Thanks so much!

Awesome! Welcome to the ultrasonic club :) I use a concentrated degreaser called LA's Totally Awesome. It works really well and is very inexpensive to get in the US. Anything similar will work pretty well too. Purple power, simple green, any kind of concentrated degreaser, but LA's has been the best for me. Just pour it right into the cleaner and drop in some minis! I definitely don't recommend iso in the sonic cleaner, one spark and you've got a tank full of very flammable liquid just sitting right there. Better safe than sorry Hope that helps!!
