Rescuing a sick street kitten - Flatbush Cats

To make more of these stories possible, please join us as a monthly supporter: flatbushcats.org/donate. While the injury here is tough to see, Mani is the lucky one.
At the same time we were trying to keep her alive, we had tons of other foster cats, TNR projects, colonies to care for, kittens to socialize.
And that’s how we learned you can’t rescue or adopt your way out of a problem this big.
We promised Mani that one day soon, we’d prevent other cats from ever suffering outside at all. Join us in making sure that happens.

I have admired your work for a while now, and it has inspired me. I saw at my new job (working at a bank now) there is a colony of 12 cats living across the street from the bank. Only one was fixed, and I knew I had to do something before it got worse. I set up an appointment with the local humane society, and thankfully they have a clinic come out there twice a month that pays in full for spay and neuter services (the only thing I had to pay was the $10 rabies vaccine for each cat). Unfortunately they only had enough appointments for me to bring up to 7 of them, but I went for it anyway. I did a lot of research into TNR, got the equipment I needed, and my coworkers also pitched in and helped with the costs. After a lot of planning, time, and effort, 7 cats (3 boys 4 girls) were caught, fixed, and have returned to their outdoor home in good health. I plan to get the rest of them on the next day the clinic comes to the humane society (they aren't visiting this week due to Christmas). Thank you for your work not just in TNR, rescue, fostering, and kitten socializing; thank you for inspiring others as well.

It's heartbreaking and yes sometimes I still think about the one cat that I couldn't help on vacation in Jakarta but this motivates me to help others 'in honor of...' please do whatever you can! If you can't foster them or have much money donate food to foster charities or at least try to allow them on your property. Spay, neuter and at least be considerate with them. We can't help them all but we can all do something small to help and achieve a better world for us and ferral cats.

My partner volunteers with The Cat Protection Agency in the UK. They do such great work in really difficult circumstances. I see the videos of their cats and they're all so friendly and gorgeous. she would bring all the cats home if she could too. No doubt about it. I wasn't really a cat person until my dog died a few years ago. I now belong to a 7-month-old tabby called Lily and I love her so much. I used to have stray cats showing up at my door all the time, and I would have to scramble around to find a place to have them fixed that I could afford. The Feral Cat Project was started in Seattle in 1997 and since then they have fixed over 133,000 cats. I haven't had a new one in 10 years, and now am fostering through a shelter instead of street rescues. The shelters around here are able to take in cats and kittens from other counties and even other states because the stray population is so low. My own personal colony only has 1 feral left and he's 15. It's a miracle organization.

Look up feral cat rescue organizations in your area to get advice, and possibly help in paying for the surgery. It's a big job to get a feral cat spayed/ neutered, but after you do, you will know you have done a huge kindness to an innocent animal. Good luck!

I have one of these cats. I rescued her at 4 months. She was feral and blind, missing one eye completely and the other was so enlarged and scarred that it doesn't have a pupil. The woman I took her from who saved the remainder of her last eye, took her to the vet but was going to let her live outside, blind, thru a Michigan winter. I took her Thanksgiving week and my husband didn't speak to me for 3 days (we already had 4 cats, 2 were her age). I began a placement search but it's hard to find a home for a blind kitten. I ended up keeping her and she is the joy of my life. She fetches and chases toys and she beats the hell out of her ping pong ball in the bath tub. She gets around find and she is less trouble than my full sight cats. I would do it all over again. I hope others will consider adopting a blind or sight challenged cat. Thank you both for all you do

Beyond heart warming, so glad to see Lionel happy and thriving. I had a 24 year old tabby until a year ago, who was asthmatic, and has loads of arthritis. He couldn't jump on and off the counters like he used too, but I made sure to hoist him to whatever his desired platform would be, as well as off. He would sleep with me because of this, otherwise he would be lonely somewhere else in the house. His name was Lionel too, and my biggest regret was not being there for him when he fell down the stairs, and needed to be put down. Lionel, I love you buddy.

How people can just walk on by a kitten in clear need of veteran assistance I’ll never ever comprehend. This isn’t something we experience here in the UK, so so many cats living on the street, the same goes for dogs, shame on the government for not handling this crisis effectively or rather at all! It’s so very sad, and no doubt disheartening to the Flatbush team.

Your videos never fail to make me cry. Happy tears though! It just, I literally can't help it. The kindness and goodness and care, to these sweet innocent animals. If only every single cat could be loved and given pets like Mani. My heart breaks for the ones still on the streets but your organization fills me with such a sweet and tender thankfulness, that even some cats get their second chance. Sweet little babies get to be loved.

I remember Mani from her voice in a previous video: which is the very one featuring Lionel. I remembered Lionel dearly because he reminded me of my dear kitten Soba, who unfortunately left us too early. It’s so heartwarming to now learn about Mani’s story and how there was once an older cat who looked out for her, in the same way she then did with Lionel.

I found and recused a cat on my way to work one day. His right eye was injured and hanging out. He went to the vet for surgery and had that eye removed . When I went in to take him home the staff at the vet's office were in tears because in a few short days he had touched them deeply with his personality. I named him after the road I found him on and that moment forward he became Jack Afton. My sister thought of him as a dashing Captain so he later became Captain Jack Afton. Unfortunately we lost him all too soon do to heart failure. We think he may have had heart worms. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication saving street cats.
