Janelle came across a place to look at exotic birds. She went inside and Touki was in a cage under a blanket. He was in terrible condition. When she brought him home he felt comfortable and secure. He loves to fly around the house now but most of all he loves getting scratches from his mom. He purrs like a cat whenever she scratches him and he will cry when he can’t see her.

This is one of the hardest birds to have in your family due to it’s complex needs to thrive. This bird is in exceptional condition, this lady is doing an amazing job of caring for this beautiful bird.

thank you for bringing up the fact that they are hard to care for. im always worried people will see videos like this and immediately think they need one. toucans are not a bird id recommend anybody have as a pet unless theyre specially qualified.

Never seen one really thriving like this in captivity.
It's only recently (about 5-6 years now), that I've come to appreciate how emotional, individual, clever, intelligent - etc., many birds are. When I first saw a video of a parrot snuggling in the bed with it's owner, it was an epiphany. They are extraordinary, and I find rescue/rehibilitation/love stories like these deeply moving.

@@LindaCasey Living in a street with a slaughterhouse the first 18 years of my life, did that trick for me. Btw, the neighbourhood was very violent. Working in such an environment brings out the worst in people. Nowerdays the slaughterhouse is gone, and it's a good place to live.

Parrots are especially intelligent and if they lose thier owner who they've come to love they get very depressed and pull all Thier feathers out it's really heartbreaking to see because these birds really know what love and kindness is ❤️🦜

Domestic turkeys and chickens will snuggle with you as babies 100%, if you raise them with love and as they mature, they will be socialized and make excellent companions.
He's gorgeous ❤ it's like having a dinosaur flying around the house!

@@Robertahausen and if you breed an entire flock of this species don’t release that anywhere outside its release it to South America, where it is native to and if you want my advice, you can breed that thick as much as you want because if you release a flock of these in South America, fruits, native to that area will grow their trees

They aren't easy birds to keep so this woman has done amazing to get him looking so well .

True! That is because they actually shouldn’t be pets. People who see videos like this of rescue birds think they are fun and good pets so they buy one but have no idea what a lot of amazing care they give these beautiful birds. So glad she saved him and giving him a good life ❤

@@LadySamurai88 oh they can be you can have deeply profound life changing relationships with the tropical birds , but they have specific needs and dedication requirements , effectively your life decisions are made based on a commitment to them otherwise they suffer badly , the problems start when people get them because they look good bit like the way they likely select human partners to lol I believe they should be in the wild , the wild birds should be , you can't release the captive bred ones successfully they simply don't have the ability to live wild and actually they would likely be rejected by thier wild counterparts as they would behave differently . They have culture believe it or not .
I have never seen a toucan except on the Fruit Loops cereal box. He is a stunning bird! You have devoted so much time to get him looking so beautiful considering what shape he was in when you got him. You are a very special person!

Same! I have never seen a real one until now. His colors are soooooo vibrant ! And quite obvious it’s due to how extremely well he is being cared for. Did you notice how pale and muted his coloring was after being brought home for the first time?

I saw one a long time ago at a bird and reptile show..it's colors were so vibrant I thought it was fake..then it turned its head very slowly and watched us pass...I would have swore it wasn't real because of how amazing the colors were

I cannot believe the difference between this precious bird from when he first got rescued until now. What effort you have put in to make sure he has the best of everything in order to be healthy and happy. ❤

I had a teacher when I was in 5th grade that was from New York and he introduced us to pigeons. My pigeon flock got to be about 25 or more. Then I also got some chickens. I finally got a parakeet and I've had several. If you treat them good and give them all the nutrition they need and love they are the most amazing sweetest cutest smartest fun and lovable little buddies you could ever have.

She rescued one out of many suffering birds. I'm so happy this beautiful toucan is thriving. My heart hurts thinking about the others left behind and suffering.

They didn't evolve. God made them that way so they are perfectly designed and equipped to do what they need to do

Their beaks are basically just keratin, like our nails and hair from what I understand. They're thin and lightweight so despite their size I don't think the beak itself actually weighs that much? And despite the toughness they're definitely prone to chipping and breaking from what I've seen. Just things to think about

They are closely related to woodpeckers, so the evolution of the beak might be related to that.

Hey was a fledgling, they all look like that. Look up toucan and aracari baby pics. He probably was sick but he looked exactly how he is supposed to at that age.

I'm so glad you put the disclaimer that folks research before rescuing or getting one as a pet. You take such wonderful care if your baby that you make it look fun and easy to have a toucan in the house. But just from having conures I know what a commitment these intelligent creatures require and it's not all fun. It takes a lot of hard work/love and devotion to get from a sickly baby to this beautiful bird!

I don't know much about the "provenance" of his beautiful bird, but it was probably some animal trafficking going on and it is so sad ! it is nice to see that this one was "rescued" but stopping to buy exotic animals is the rich countries is the best we can do to stop those traffics and the looting of wild biodiversity.

Humans have made friends with so many animals by being good itch scratchers.
We spent some time in Costa Rica and we would hike daily for several miles through the rainforest seeing a variety of reptiles, monkeys and birds. We wanted so much to see a Toucan, but we didn't. On our 2nd last day we were having our breakfast outdoors and just 5 feet away from us was a beautiful Toucan watching us dine. He was sooo colorful, we were thrilled, our trip felt complete. 😂

💕I wonder if he could have an aviary outside with other birds as well as the special attention? I had a blue&yellow Macaw that I would let out during the day in my huge mimosa tree. I left plenty of food and water at the base of the tree for him until I came home after work and then he would crawl down and we (my little dog a me) would go inside where he had a large cage to sleep in at night. 💕

What a beautiful bird
I'm thoroughly convinced that the human hand is one of the most transformative apparatuses in the entire animal kingdom. We can pat animals in ways they've never been touched before. We can handle them with gentle care. We can feed them in ways that remove most of the difficulty of wild life for them, taming them in our care. We can tend to their wounds in ways no creature could, even if they had the mind to do so. We can even communicate language and signals with them, just using our hands. Our hands become something like a surrogate parent or almost a kind of godlike being towards these creatures. We ought to use them for good things more often.
