Rescue in the Atlantic- SV Alliance Sinks

While participating in the Newport to Bermuda race, the sailing vessel, Alliance, struck, an object approximately 300 miles south of Newport, Rhode Island damaging her rudder mechanism and making it impossible for her emergency pumps to keep up from the massive amount of water surging into the boat. The crew, sent out an urgent Mayday message to other vessels in the area. Several vessels responded, including the SV Windborn and the SV Banter. SV Ceilidh was the closest and was able to help the 9 crew onto their vessel and continue on to Bermuda. Remarkably, while the SV Alliance sank, none of her crew were injured.

I appreciate that everyone on the rescue vessel was wearing appropriate gear. I couldn't see if the aft crew was clipped in, but I am guessing they were. Excellent job on the rescue.
Nicely handled. I’ve done 26 Chicago Mac Races, that was an awesome display of seamanship and why we take our SOLAS training. Bravo Zulu

Struck an object with their rudder. This caused a hole in the boat that the pmups could not keep up with.

I have travelled off shore east coast Australia , and have seen a sea container just a foot showing bobbing in water. I us3d it as a FAD , trolling around , best day fish ev3r . Never like to hit one.
