I looked up the price online and the operation to repair a malformed heart can cost between 3000-8000 usd. And that is only including the cost of the operation. He has a heart of gold to be putting this kind of money in a dog. I hope he gets help to pay this.

I have absolutely zero proof of this, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Dr. Chris may have paid for the surgery. You could just see how moved he was by Mel's love for Benji. Again, zero proof, but the fact that he accompanied him to SASH just gave me that impression.

In 2014 I took in two abandoned and hurt kittens. One was up for being put to sleep, the other one was up for adoption. I took both of them, because I couldn't leave one - especially when they are brothers and went through hell and back together. It took me two years to get them to trust humans again, but then they truly turned out perfect ❤️ They are amazing adult cats now, so social and trusting and loving.

Years ago my parents wanted to send a cat that my older sister brought home after breaking up with her ex-boyfriend. The cat was stressed out to the point he was chewing out his fur and harming himself. He had wounds all over his body which had hair stuck to them. He was sick, throwing up and had a fear of men. 7 year old me wasn't gonna let that happen and was determine to save him. After a vet visit we found out he had a food allergy and kept switching his food until we found the right one for him and our other cats. His wounds started to heal up. But most all of he got over his fear of men. 12 years had gone by and he lived to be 14 years old. He lived knowing love, family, and most of all got to know a way better life. Even my mom said it herself that she didn't think he would make it as long as he did. All of my family said that I did an amazing job caring for him and bringing him back from the state he was in. And here's the thing I'm scarred for life seeing how bad he was in. Do I care? No, it was worth it to had seen him live the life I give him.

The quote for a balloon valvuloplasty for my little doggie was just over $5,000 USD. We ended up not doing it, as she wasn’t a good candidate for that type of surgery. She has the same type of heart murmur that Benji had, but a more severe degree of disease. We went to see a cardiologist, and their assessment was that the degree of stenosis she has is so severe that a balloon procedure wouldn’t reduce her heart disease enough to make it worth the risk of surgical complications. We are currently in conversation with a different cardiologist farther away that offers a different type of surgery. It’s an open heart procedure that creates a bypass around the faulty valve completely. Very innovative and very risky, but it’s the best chance for my tiny princess to have a normal life. Scares the crap out of me though. My nine pound little beauty queen having open heart surgery. I do think we made the right decision though not doing a balloon valvuloplasty. The riskiest part of the procedure is after they inflate the balloon but before they can take it back out. Extremely high risk, and after watching this episode I understand why. Even with the risk of having an open heart surgery, it’s still a better option for my tiny princess.

Bawled through the entire video. As a VT, you’d think I’d be used to it by now, but I just have this special place in my heart for cats & kittens. I do love all animals & help all types of small species, but cats & kittens are my specialty ! ❤️Thank you Sash for helping all animals that are in need of help & for doing yer absolutely BEST to make sure they have the great quality of life they deserve ! Thank you Lisa for sticking in there in helping the kittens turn around & live, & congrats on yer NEW ADDITION ! ❤️Love you all !

@@Bleachman555 So that the Joey would probably be killed by the other devils? Sometimes intervention is necessary especially when it’s part of a program that’s trying to bring a species back from the brink of extinction. And in any case, “leaving babies with their mom where they belong” doesn’t apply to all animal species.

My little sister has pulmonary stenosis and I have mitral valve prolapse. They did the same procedure on her when we were little to save her life. This episode hits close to home for me. Back in the 90s it was a fairly new procedure but my dad refused to let them do open heart surgery. He made them do the balloon procedure. Glad it’s a successful alternative to open heart now.

I have so much respect for people who rescue animals with medical issues or disabilities. These are the animals that will have a hard time finding a forever home and they need people like Mel (and like my family) who are willing to do whatever is required to give them a safe and long life. Last month, my family adopted a little Jack Russell who has a Grade II Luxating Patella despite being under 2 years old. One knee dislocates at times and we were told that she'll eventually need surgery and that her other knees may also develop the condition. We'll happily follow any treatment and medication she needs in the future and are very vigilant. She didn't ask to have faulty knees and shouldn't be shunned because of it.
