About threading the hair through the needle: you might find it easier to use a tapestry needle threader (it looks like a double-ended, very thin metal piece that allows for incredibly easy threading into the needle you're using). I've used that for so long now, and it really does help make the knot rooting go faster!

Thank you so much for this video! It has given me an alternative when hunting for a brunette ponytail Barbie, which isn't easy finding on a budget and the ones I do have choppy hair like this one did, and I did have concerns when it came to choosing hair brands for reroots. This video has opened my door to solutions should I find a brunette pony that is within budget but has choppy hair. Thank you again, will definitely try this method.

Wow, Amazing work, you did a great job on the doll. I have blonde ponytail No.3 Barbie and her hair was been cut and trim from the past owner, after I saw your video, it made me to restore her hair back to original ponytail again, but I have no idea what kind of hair type to use for the doll.

Vintage ponytail Barbies had Saran hair. There are different textures of Saran. The Saran they sell today is a hard Saran. I've personally researched this fact. Mohair doesn't heat set . The other fibers do not hold up to heat setting of which Mattel still uses today. Barbie hair is set in a special oven. Many saay acetate but it's a fragile fiber .
@DoeDeerWonderland

Could very well be. A majority of collectors are convinced it's mohair, and it's what is available to us now, so that's what most people use. I have to strongly disagree on the heat setting of mohair, in my experience it sets great, even better than saran.
Just found out one of my girls that’s in really bad shape is a number four so I’m watching this to prep for a reroot😩

I have a question... have you ever done a glamour misty doll? I had my moms as a kid, mom said she came with 3 pens that changed her hair color and when she used one it melted her hair so the whole time she had her... she had her bangs gone and the ends of her hair cut off. Almost like the hairstyle where its shaved underneath and on the sides. Yesterday i finished her reroot and wow is it gorgeous! I used a dark garnet red mixed with bright red and put a few strands of neon yellow in the very front. She looks like she has fire theme hair now. 😊 Your work gets me everytime! So wonderful! Cant wait to see your next video!!

Judging from the way you described the decorative rope fibres you used to reroot the doll as very natural feeling and soft, as well as ha ing limited colour options, my best guess is they’re Kanekalon some similar fibre. Kanekalon is/was used pretty heavily for barbies, especially those from the 1980s up until at least the 2000s. I dont know what fibres vintage barbies of the 1960s used, as I haven’t had the chance to handle one myself and identify the hair texture, but it’s possible they used some natural feeling fibre like Kanekalon.
@DoeDeerWonderland
2 жыл бұрын
I find myself having to disagree, I have felt kanekalon many times, it is way thicker and is definitely more "fluid" than this fiber. Also it can't hold a curl very well. This is something else entirely. I guess it's just one of those things where you have to feel it to see the difference haha
Love your videos because they are all Barbie. Thank you so much for them. P.S. You should try using a needle threader it would save you so much time threading the hair.
@DoeDeerWonderland

Thanks for the tip! I probably should have used one haha
Haha, I loved the doll's hand touching the hair. Very funny! PD: how long does it takes you to finish a rerooting?
@DoeDeerWonderland
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you haha. This particular reroot took me about 4 full days between my job and other life stuff 🙃 reroots where you poke the hair in and glue it take way less, about 8 hours if there's something seriously wrong with your head and do it in one sitting like I do haha
Wow, I've never heard of people using anything like that for d9llhair, but it looks great!! It's expensive to get doll hair shipped to my country, so I might have to try it somr time. I wonder if its a grade of nylon that is no longer used in dolls? You can dye synthetic fibre with rit dye more, but it might turn out weird if it's still braided in a rope....
@DoeDeerWonderland

It’s a great alternative, the best I know of in terms of thickness of the fibers

Yeah I left mine alone she has that short hair not due to having a hair cut but because the hair has become brittle if u pull on it not tugging it the hair is brittle and pulls out. And yeah I'm afraid of rerooting it. But thank you for sharing.

Well, that is what happens with 50+ year old toys. Plastic degrades and it is definitely a choice whether the owner wants to try and do something about it or not 🤷♂️
From what i know the vintage ponytail barbies used mohair as their fiber 🤔 i can't really confirm myself cause i don't owm one, but it was said in an interview with bettina dorfmann, so that's gotta mean something
@DoeDeerWonderland
11 ай бұрын
That's a very divisive opinion. Some claim that a few Barbies were rooted with mohair, most say it's always been synthetic mohair. Often times mohair is also used as a generic term. I haven't personally come across any Barbies rooted with natural mohair, as a simple strand test can prove, or in my case, disprove it (natural mohair turns to ash when burned, synthetic melts into a ball) What was originally used we may never know for sure, but I, as many other people in the business, have tried both, and this is just what looks closest to the original. I don't want to come across as disrespectful, but Bettina Dorfman is a collector.

@@DoeDeerWonderland no worries! Thought since she also has some restoration experience maybe she found a way to confirm the fiber 😬 had no idea it was such a split opinion on what fiber was used 🤔 didn't mean to come across as rude either :') i just figured since it was in a low-views german interview maybe it wasn't spread info, so i' m sorry if i threw you of in any way

Aliexpress sells them! Just look for shiny Twisted cord
I have one like this Her hair has been cut But rather than rerooting which I don't do ( but a great concept) I thought I would just paint her bald spot with black liquitex and maybe a matte finish to seal I think I have enough hair to style somewhat What do you think DDW? Would this be a good Idea? Before styling I think I would comb the hair away from the bald spot and use an elastic around to secre the hair down then paint the bald spot I'm surprised they didn't paint the head as with other dolls

You know what? It's quite controversial to do anything to vintage dolls, as I've learned the hard way, but sometimes you just have to get creative and work with what you got. Or you could get flocking powder and use that to distract from the missing hair with something that looks vaguely like hair?

Whew! I thought for sure that this was going to be the second video where a dude punches new holes in the ever deteriorating vinyl head of a doll that’s pushing (if not pulling) sixty that I watched TONIGHT. What a relief to be be wrong. Too many people do things to dolls - out of ignorance, impatience, carelessness or whatever have you that can damage them, sometimes severely & it seems as if a sizable number of these people are on youtube teaching other people to do things in the wrong way. Ironically, this damage is sometimes done in the interest of “restoration”. I’m so pleased to see someone who knows what they’re doing & doing it in a non-damaging way. Cool idea to use the fiber from drapery cord for the hair. That fine, silky texture is worth the extra work. And did I hear wrong or did you say “limited” colors?? Because where I’m from, the colors you can get that stuff in is limited only by what the store actually has on hand. And I suppose that, Trends being cyclical in nature, the colors made available for decorating is subject to shifting availability of colors. Still, the basic golds & browns have got to be pretty basically always in stock.
