Requiem for a Dream (2000) PLOT & ENDING EXPLAINED

Ойын-сауық

Hope you guys enjoyed my film analysis on Requiem for a Dream. I worked really hard on this one so I hope you guys thought it was good. Sorry my skin looks super red. For some reason the camera recorded more dimly than usual. I record in an area with no natural light so sometimes the footage looks pretty blurry. I will be ordering an LED Ring Light soon so hopefully that will fix the trick.

I am going to remake this video. There are a lot of problems in regard to explaining the plot, also at the time I was pretty clueless about hard drugs and have a much better understanding now. This video is my second oldest video, and I cannot handle watching my younger self, its painful. I Made the video when I was 18, and I am about to turn 23. This video was not getting many views and then randomly starting going off. While that may seem good, out of all my videos this is one of the most problematic ones. I will pin the link when its done.

The only thing this movie messed up was that when you shoot heroin your pupils get small.. Just a bit of a pet peeve from a recovering addict. Man, the scene with Marion hugging the drugs and smiling trips me out so bad. I got really into prostitution to fund my heroin habit. At first I was really resistant to do it, but I finally gave in. Once I was able to do it and not care about my pride anymore I felt so satisfied with being abke to get all the dugs and alcohol I wanted. I had no real friends and rented a space on the floor of a crackhouse for $10 a night, but felt satisfied.. for a while. I'm thankful every day that I was able to get out of that life.

The part where she’s tearing the place apart looking for drugs got me, I remember that feeling and anxiety when you know you’re going to go thru withdrawals and need any tiny amount....she’s such a good actress it was so convincing. I’ve been sober almost 9 years.

Good for you! happy for ya :) the only other thing that always gets me about this movie, is the entire florida trip-plan. Nyc would... nevvvvvver run completely out of drugs.. but how they were treated by the racist southern cops, or cops in general.. very on the nose. Im just happy I live in the one place in this country that will finally stop throwing sick human beings in jail or prison.. for being sick.

This is probably nitpicking, but I don't think Marion's smile at the end is because she's happy about where she is ... if she's happy about anything, it's that she's got a decent supply of drugs (for now). I think she's long past the point of being able to think about her actual situation.

At 20 years old I was diagnosed with a rare cancer and had to do a year of chemotherapy and radiation that tore my body apart. Then I was prescribed large amounts of opiates which quickly spiraled into IV heroin use which tore my body and soul apart. I can envision the music of this movie going from the day I was diagnosed with cancer up until about two years ago. My life was like this movie.....except it went on for 14 years.

While I never spiraled into heroin addiction.....I too was introduced to opiates to handle all the pain and trauma the treatment for my anal cancer (squamous cell carcinoma). I refused opiates up until I was hospitalized (neutropenia, sepsis, radiation burns) and then was on morphine drips. Was hospitalized almost three weeks. Upon release I was then prescribed fentanyl patches, oxycodone, OxyContin. I asked my oncologist if I would become addicted (I was terrified that I would as this occurred 9 yrs ago when the public started to become more aware of the addictions of opiates and people were overdosing right and left) and he said absolutely not. That as long as I was in pain...I would not become addicted. What he FAILED to also tell me was that while not everyone becomes ADDICTED to opiates (I thank God I did not because I could not imagine having to deal with THAT WAR on top of everything else) that you will still become PHYSICALLY DEPENDENT on opiates. First time I stopped taking them I lasted 10 days but finally went back on as I did not sleep 6 out of those 10 days. Second time I went off....I stayed off...but can honestly say that the withdrawals from those opiates (I was on opiates for two years) was comparable, if not WORSE then the pain and trauma I went through during my cancer treatment. Those withdrawals lasted MONTHS. To this day, I refuse to take any type of pain medicine (outside of Tylenol, Aleve) unless I’m terminal. Worst, most traumatic experience of my life. It’s always nice to hear of the “happy ending” stories from others that came out on the other side of opiate dependency/addiction because we all know that MANY DO NOT. Stay strong....you are a WARRIOR!!!! 🙏🏼❤️

It's true, I lost a cousin to drugs and this is jarring. The movie made me remember my aunt's words before my cousin's final days "that's no longer him anymore". Seeing someone get lost in that stuff and knowing that people like the characters in requiem for a dream are being lost daily all over the world to drugs hurts. I know plenty of people that are using too but they all think they got it "under control". Worse epidemic than covid if you ask me.

I dont think I have ever cried so much after watching a movie... I started going down a bad path in my life. I can relate to some aspects of this. The one I cried for the most was the mother. Because she was by far the most innocent in this movie. She was just lonely and got her first bit of good news in a long time. She just wanted to be on TV. Everything she did was either out of love or innocent desire. But even then she ended up in a mental hospital. So sad...

I was hoping for the actual explanation of the ending. If you just look up the position they take in their beds, which u simply described as "curled up", the details show this: "Fetal Sleeping. This position can imply introversion, sensitivity and shyness, and a desire to protect oneself. People who sleep in this position are known to be tough on the outside, but big softies on the inside". In other words, they just return to their childhood, where they are in need of affection / protection from their parents and there is hope for a bright future ahead. Plus this movie showcases the fixation / addiction many of us - humans have, with, money, substances, or making it big no matter what, or being recognized by others. Also, the whole visual set of life on the suburbs is backed up by the awesome score of the brilliant Clint Mansel. Maybe for a younger audience, the term "disturbing" sounds more appealing, thus ensuring more views. However, it is an in depth view of some of the problems that many face in every day life. Disturbing, not so much, alarming though, yep that's more like it. Peace.

My second thought was that she’s portrayed as a super fan of the show, so it makes sense that she was a frequent caller or sent a lot of fan mail, thus ending up in their radar. Also, when she ends up at the tv station, one of workers there mentions that it can take a long time for people to be on the show after they apply.

The movie really shows down to the wire what heroin addiction does you and what you're willing to do to get your next fix. It also shows how quick you result to crime to support your habit and eventually something catches up to you (overdose, arrested, rehab, institution). I was a heroin addict myself and I've been sober over 4 years. I never did any sexual favors, but who knows, if I went further down the rabbit hole, prostitution may have been a choice. Thankfully, I never got that far down. Stealing from family/friends, stores, robbing houses, doing runs for the dope man was how I got money to help my habit. I've managed to force myself 4 times to watch the movie all the way through. Other times I had to tap out. It's just that disturbing to me because it's so real how the addiction world works. I won't spoil the movie, but the ending will fuck you up, whether you're an addict or not. I read an article that Director Darren Aronofsky actually interviewed drug addicts and asked them questions (What Dope Sickness/Withdrawal Is Life, Abscesses, What Did You Do For Your Fix) trying to make the movie as realistic as possible.

I suffer from severe chronic pain and can only function with heavy opiods which barely dull the pain. I still work four days a week in a very responsible job and I do this well, but I often reduce the dose in order to feel more normal for as long as i can, but eventually have to increase again. Its very legitimate pain, not a desire to get high, but a movie like this is very confrounting because you realise the situation is similar regardless of why you need drugs, they make you depressed, they are addictive, and the reason why someone with legitimate physical pain take a drug and a drug addict takes a drug are actually the same - because they are in pain. Its very very very hard. Being in agony always is unbelievable

I was with a chick my freshmen year of college, and this was her favorite movie. I had never seen it before. When we watched it, I was really disturbed. This world is all too familiar to me, and to see it played out in a movie for over an hour and a half was very hard. It brought a lot of trauma back, and I can safely say I'll never watch this movie again. That's really a credit to the movie, the writing and the acting is gripping and accurate.

@@foreverkingdom8560 I know I’m kind of late with this reply, but nevertheless I’d like to add something to this. I think the reason WHY this would be someone’s favourite movie is important. Personally this is one of my favourites, not because I enjoy it, in fact the first (and only) time I watched it was one of the most uncomfortable and disturbing experiences I’ve ever felt watching a film; but that’s exactly why it’s so good. That’s what the director wanted. You can appreciate a film as art, and see how successful it is in conveying its intended message , without glorifying or condoning anything that occurs in it. On the other hand, if this is someone’s favourite movie for entertainment reasons, or whatever else, then yeah I guess that’s a red flag. Basically just look out for the reasons why someone says a movie like this is their favourite, and it should be clear if they’re a bad person.

I never viewed this film as disturbing or depressing; I viewed it as realistic. It plainly shows what happens when you get mixed up with drugs. Who could or would realistically expect a happy ending once you enter that world? To do so would be as unforgivably foolish as playing with rattlesnakes and expecting to not get bit. Therefore I couldn't feel sorry for the main characters, but with a small exception for Sara because she didn't get into drugs with the intent to get high, she merely wanted to lose a little weight so she would look nice on television. However, she knew the consequences of drug abuse from watching Harry and didn't even attempt to stop him. She enabled him. Even when he warned her to quit using she didn't listen, and thus she wasn't as much of a victim from that point on as much as she was a your typical junkie. Harry had no redeeming qualities throughout the movie: besides the drug use, he stole from his mom, encouraged Marion into prostitution, broke promises, and never seemed to feel a hint of remorse. Marion also "got hers" in the end. She was already damaged goods at the outset, and took to prostitution like a fish to water which said to the viewer that she probably would have ended up a whore even if she her and Harry had stayed together.

I am a social worker, as sad as it seems, this movie is scary because it is reality. We often forget that people try to get their life under control with drugs and alcohol. Most times we don't just lose control because we want to, it is an effect of a greater problem and drugs/alcohol seem like a way to handle the pain of it, until it takes the pain and control away. People often judge with "they choose to take drugs" yes some of the addicts do but most are a victim of the circumstances as weird as it sounds. Most people who caresly judge over drug addicts are the people with enough privilege to never have met anybody who is struggeling and it cannot be covert with money (sorry about my english, it is not my main language)

Yeah I was 13.. not super little up but still young enough to where I had only smoked weed and cigarettes and drank maybe 2x at that point lol I started mi opiate habit around 20 because my new boyfriend did it and I guess I just.. wanted to be on his level? In retrospect, idk what I was thinking really. I was naive as hell tbh. Wish he would have warned me about the withdrawals tho, omg. Cause once those started to occur (or at least when I realized that's what I was experiencing everytime I would have nothing for 6-12hrs) and the drama conveyed within. Fortunately I have never went down the road of prostitution, but I did lose a lot.. clothes (stolen of course), my home, money, friendships or loved ones.. I did always hold a job down tho because my logic was, no work = no $ = no drk = sick af.. My advice to couples struggling with addiction/codependence is to taper down and then move out of town when you feel you've got thru the tough part of the sickness. It makes it so much easier to not relapse after the 3 days when you remove yourselves from the trap environment and most importantly, the people.. triggers are a very real thing ans you want to avoid them like the plague! Learn what triggers you and make sure you can get as much zen and rest because detox will have you feeling not only fatigued and lethargic but your emotions all over the place lol. I wish you all good health and prosperity. I hope these two cents help shed some light on the stuggle. Peace. Xx

Notes that would have made this more realistic..as a recovering addict who now works in healthcare. The ER would not deny healthcare especially with an illness/injury so severe in order to turn you over to law enforcement. They won’t turn you into law enforcement just for being an addict and having an injury related to drug use. So that doesn’t seem realistic to me. Also, I’m sure shit like that does happen with his arm and the infection, etc. but I think more common is stuff like endocarditis which is also very serious and life threatening. Also, i don’t know anyone who has hallucinated off of just straight heroin. Maybe if it was cut with something bad etc. i think meth is more likely to do that because you stay up for so long. I think it’s a pretty common misconception that heroin makes you act crazy. While you might act crazy and do stupid horrible shit when drug seeking, when you’re high you will probably just chill and nod out. Especially if you’re shooting up. The drug seeking behavior is the shit people usually associate with drug addiction. Some people of drugs forever w/o crazy drug seeking behavior bc they are able to pay for their drugs without resorting to anything crazy. But once you run out of money to support your habit is when you start doing shit like stealing tv’s from your mom or prostitution. (Which is one of the arguments behind decriminalization & medicalizing the illicit drug supply..if you provide a safe supply to people with medical oversight, there would be far less overdose deaths, far less of the crazy shit that goes on with drug dealing, addicts wouldn’t be committing crimes by getting high, and it would be provided legally so they wouldn’t resort to crime to get it, so once they do get clean they should be able to live a more successful life with no record, etc.) Also, opioids don’t make your pupils bigger they make your pupils smaller.

When I was on drugs I literally had the same pills she had but cut with mega fentanyl and stims and this movie reminded me sm of me and my ex when we first met everything was perfect and once drugs got involved it got even more perfect but than my worst nightmares came alive I don’t know how but I still believe in a higher power

I was in a group home for children aging out the foster system when this came out. For some reason or another it was chosen as one of our Friday night vhs rental movies. It was the last one we watched late into the morning hours. Prolly the best message to young people you could ever give them about the dangers of drugs. During one of the scenes where Sara had encounters with her fridge it startled one of the other kids so suddenly he threw his soda across the room!

If I had to choose between Trainspotting and Requiem for a Dream, I'd probably choose Trainspotting because it had a good ending.

End of the day - Renton was the smartest out of everyone. He realised they weren't his mates, they were just the people stuck with him.
