Reproduction RP-46 Belt-Feed Conversion

Operator's Guide to the RP-46: • SMG Guns - DPM & RP46 ...
You can order your own by contacting SMG Guns at [redacted per KZread rules]. It's very exciting to have these available, as they are extremely difficult to find originals for sale - and these reproductions can be mounted on standard DP/DPM guns (semiauto or full auto) whereas the original require a couple permanent modifications to the host gun.
Full comparison video with an original RP-46 coming soon, I hope!

    It's interesting that you focus on the ammo container issue, which does seem like it would be a big deal. But in practice, I think infantry using M60s and FN MAGs (excl. the M240) almost never use , or used, ammo cans attached to the gun. German infantry use them for the MG3 sometimes but still you very often see them carried with belts dangling.

  • @509Gman

    @509Gman

    6 жыл бұрын

    There are bags that clip on to the M240 version of the MAG, I just didn’t use them because they made it more awkward to carry. If you’re right handed, you like to carry the gun hanging the sling around your neck, across your front with the muzzle pointed to the left. When you have the “nutsack” on the gun, it’s between you and the ~30 pounds of GPMG, digging into your pelvis and belly. Also availability may be an issue in some units.

    So, one of the thing that has been with me for a really long time is: why Soviet need the PK machine gun. That question then relates to other question: Why Soviet didn't use the RP-46 like how the MG-34/42 was. In infantry role, why didn't it has the ability to use a tripod mount, like how Tachanka did? My thought on this answer is, the SG-43, as they are adopted by Soviet infantry in hot time of WW2, the production of them is huge. The modernize version of the SG-43 also comes sometime around 1945 so it's before the RP-46. Because of that, if you change from SGM to RP-46, you would waste a huge amount of guns and production machine And to be fair, I have considered the idea of making a medium machine gun from the SG-43 too. You see, the KGK version of the SGM machine gun, and the fact that the SGM use 722mm barrel, which is significant longer than the DP machine gun or the PK machine gun. By cut down and thin down the barrel, I believe it can at least cut down 2 pounds, and the weight is about the same as the MG-34, MG42, or the RP-46 just like barrel weight on the PKMT vs the PKM. But let's say, there are still a huge amount of DP machine gun production machine, so the RP-46 might be needed Another question may comes up: did the Soviet try to create a belt-fed DP machine gun before? As we know, the DShK is a big DP machine gun, and it's belt-fed, so what if it's scale down? The answer is yes, they did. The name of the gun is "унифицированный ручной пулемёт ДП-39", the DP-39. There's an article on it, and as you can see, it's mounted on the tripod, so the idea of a DP general purpose machine gun has been a thing before, and you can do that. But just like on the way to create the PK machine gun or SG-43, it took a lot of attempt and time. On the problem of no way to have the belt on the gun, I think it's not a "can't", but more of a "not needed", as you know how RPD, which is tested in 1944, is also eject case down from the gun and they have ability to mount a belt box. But why not needed? I write on my research like this: "there is less requirement for where you store the belt. You can go by aluminum box steel frame like on the PKM, plastic box on M249, cardboard box on M60 and M240, a fabric bag, or even...nothing, just wear the belt. If you see M240 war cam, you will see a lot of the time they do so. I was concern about this. It's not only about your gun can jam. In fact, US M240 only have 1 gas setting, which is the lowest one, and they seem to do fine. But the thing is, you have to clean them after that" Edit: I just read the RP-46 1949 manual on Forgotten Weapon website. The first thing is the name. RP-46 is abbreviated for "ротный пулемёт образца 1946 года", which translate to "Company machine gun". And as it is a company machine gun, the ammunition loadout is huge too, which is 250 rounds belt, written in the very first page of the manual. Even on the video Ian said that gun like MG-42 have belt box of 50. 50 is general number for machine that weight about 12kg. We can see the same thing with M240. As I see on Funker530 channel, they noted in the description that guys that are not from US Military load for 50 rounds first, then he use long ammo belt from his buddy to goes for rampage. Same thing can be see from other video And you know what else has about the same amount of ammo that? DP pan mag. In the manual, they also said about the use of both magazine and belt with the removable of the top receiver A little note but this is where Russian forum has an argument on the MG-34/42 vs DP machine gun. In some way, that make sense, as DP is more of a LMG and MG-34/42 is more of everything else. I also think the idea of using a 50 rounds belt with a fast firing gun sucks

    Hey Ian, I have a question, I've done research into National Ordnance receivers for 1903A3 Springfields made in the 60's and 70's. I've gotten a LOT of conflicting fudd lore that says these things are bombs and ready to blow, too soft, too brittle, they stretch. Whole nine yards. But I also found a source that cites ballistic testing done by a lab that is still in business today that says they tested at a stronger strength than original GI milspec receivers. Where does the fudd end and the truth begin? If you guys know I'd love to see an info video or just a response if possible. As I recently bought one, not know they weren't an original war time manufacturer.

    The SMG conversion is pretty clever but woah is it spendy, otherwise I'd already have one for my DPM. I realize there is a lot of intricate machining done, man hours, and R&D that was involved so maybe someday I'll get one but if they were half the price they are no I wouldn't think twice, I think that's a more reasonable price.

    I understand that it's the best opportunity to get certain weapons and a semi-auto version of some weapons can be almost as much fun to shoot than a regular version, but the MG and SMG conversions usually seem to have all the drawbacks (and sometimes made worse) and less fun than the originals.

    @Вячеслав Скопюк Well, the RPD, although using an intermediate cartridge, was an improvement of the DP28 design and it replaced the DP28/DPM in the Red Army. @Ian Okay, my mistake. I know, that the RPD was designed earlier, than the conversion of the DPM to the RP46, yet it entered service later. Since the RPD replaced the DP28/DPM on squad level, I thought the RP46 was also replaced by it, but it had the different tactical purpose of fire support on company level. And with the designations RPK (AK-family SAW) and PKM (GPMG), i bet I'm not the first one mixing RPK and PKM.

    I am going with Ian on this particular model. The actual definition is Sub Machine Gun and in general designates a weapon chambered in what are typically pistol cartridges(9mm or .45acp) but with full auto capabilities.

    А Уголовный кодекс Российской Федерации (УК РФ) не запрещает владеть таким устройством. У нас ограничены (требуют оформления разрешения) только 5 деталей оружия: ствол, ствольная коробка, затвор, барабан, пистолетная/револьверная рамка.

    And the absurdity continues with KZread. Maybe if Ian was transgender and had some axe to grind with everyone this video would be acceptable to KZread. PS. No notification - thanks for that KZread.

    Axel Pingol Joking, but in an angry way tbh. Very nearly every channel I watch on KZread is under attack from KZread itself - firearms, history, true crime, even science making up the bulk of my viewing. Channels which promote, or are aimed at groups which promote 'alternative' lifestyles are seemingly left alone, irrespective of how distasteful they might be.

    What if you made all your videos private, and then made a bunch of videos that are completely off topic, possibly something supporting minorities or the rights of various none male genders so that KZread can't demonetize it without getting in trouble for being "insensitive" and then post a link to the firearm video of the day in the description of post it in the comments section? What would happen then?

    That is certainly among the ugliest guns I've ever seen, but this being the Russians I'm not going to doubt it's function as a gun.
