Reproducing the Winged Victory of Samothrace in Bronze: Part 2

Ғылым және технология

This is a reproduction of the winged victory of Samothrace. I used lost PLA casting to get it done and cast it in silicon bronze.

    Wooow. honestly the 3D printed version in the first video was lookin pretty awesome, especially after blending the seams and it lost that plastic-y gloss. i would gladly stick that on a wood base and call-er-done but hot damn that end product looks amazing!

    I really enjoyed this video, Im glad you push through the hard parts, and end up producing a beautiful statue! Also i think it would be neat to do a statue of The gayer anderson cat. Its beautiful simple and could be sized to fit your flask well. Cheers from colorado.

    For the 3D prints. 1. You can print some pieces without the top layer, this way you won´t have to cut them off later on with the soldering iron. 2. For infill you can use "lighning infill" with the prusa slicer, it works really well. It´s saves the most possible amount of infill and is easier to get out the infill later on. 3. For PLA /PETG / ABS Use the soldering iron to fuse the individual pieces together instead of the super glue, this should result in a cleaner melt out. 4. Use Polycast instead of other filaments. It has a very clean burnout rate, it does not expand while its hot and cracks the ivestment plaster and it can be smoothed with alcohol. It´s basically made for metal casting. It costs 3x more than PLA but for your use case it should be worth it and 60 bucks for 1kg should still be okay price wise. Also the holes for the investment are so small, why ? Make them as big as you can get away with. And if you want to increase the thickness of the model just slush some wax in there twice. To capture all the details, mix a little bit of investment first and brush it on thinly with a painters brush and THEN dunk in completely in while it is still a little wet to prevent seperation from the two shells. And you ALWAYS forget the metal pins xD

    Don't hate me, but im in love with the small flaws. This piece is from the 1800s. To me, it wouldn't be perfect. It's old, and it should show. In any case, you did an excellent job!!

    Great work! Maybe try beveling the edges that you weld together for better penetration. The welds should be stronger if you do.

    I enjoy your contents, and I have two questions for you. First, when you steam the wax out of investment, how long do you leave it there and is it just boiling water? And second question, after you steam the wax out do you still follow the normal burnout cycle or you do something different because there isn't really any wax left? And also, do you do anything different to deal with the additional moisture content in the investment which wouldn't be there, like let it completely dry between steaming and burnout? Thanks!

    When I steam the wax out I still follow a normal burn out cycle. I heat it slowly to slowly drive off the water. I steam it as long as it takes to melt out the wax and that depends on the size of the flask. Roughly an hour though, give or take.

    If you never fail, you aren't trying. get a smaller hammer and make some punches from old drill bits. I love seeing your progress. When you can afford one get a Foredom tool, having a foot control and all that power at low RPMs is amazing. It will help you realize your potential. I appreciate your persistence and rapid progress.

    I do a lot of 3d work, next time you hit a wall like this, reach out. It's very easy to increase the wall thickness of parts like this and modify the support structure to actually work. Obviously I like your work and am happy to offer what support I can.

    excellent video as always. You may find that a Professional version of the Dremel tool, The Foredom tool, has an option to buy an reciprocating hand piece... which you can mount stone, files, or any thing else.. and get a back and forth motion instead of a rotary motion.. this may allow you to do a much faster job of getting that nice filed finish in those hard to reach places. Also... if you have not heard of them, though expensive, Gesswein is the name of a company that makes exceptional sculpting stones and products. Love your videos, grats on the hot wife, and good life.... keep em comin. if you decide to sell merch for your youtube channel.. i will make the effort to buy a Lundgren Bronze Studios Coffee cup.

    @@lundgrenbronzestudios Lady Liberty is colossal weighing 450,000 pounds(mostly concrete base, inner steal supports, and a copper covering). This exterior copper shell is entirely hand hammered from sections of 3/32" copper sheet(weighing approximately 62,000 pounds, 151 feet tall!) The torch segment was damaged in WW1 by German Spies who blew up a nearby ammunitions supply about to be delivered to our Russian WW1 allies. The explosion was the 9/11 event of its day, blowing out thousands of windows, damaging the statue's torch, and permanently closing public access to the torch(highest point). The explosion was the equivalent of an earthquake measuring between 5.0 and 5.5 on the Richter scale, and was felt in Philadelphia, PA. Gutzon Borglum, who later sculpted Mt. Rushmore, redesigned the torch a few months latter, replacing much of the copper torch with stained glass. Those wishing to climb the narrow inner staircase to the Crown Balcony must purchase a special ticket, which may be reserved up to a year in advance. A total of 240 people per day can ascend: ten per group, three groups per hour. Climbers may bring only medication and cameras-lockers are provided for other items-and must undergo a second security screening. Stair access to the Torch Balcony remains closed to the public but can be seen live via webcam. www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/statueofliberty/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Liberty. 2nd the SOL nomination!! Once had a cheap 9" die cast pot metal SOL that fell off the mantel broke in two - bronze would never do that.

    I’m making a two part silicon mold but my wax keeps seeping though the cracks in even when everything is clamped and keyed. Any tips? What kind of wax are you using?

  • @lundgrenbronzestudios

    @lundgrenbronzestudios

    11 ай бұрын

    I’d have to see the mold but fist make sure the seams a tight. Sounds like you are trying that. Next make sure the wax is a low temperature. And even if it leaks, let it cool and pour the wax again. It will self heal and then your will be able to wax chase the seam away.
