Repotting My Amaryllis Bulbs (2021)

My Amaryllis bulbs have just entered their dormant period and so now is the perfect time to carry out any repotting. In this video I repot three of my Amaryllis bulbs into larger pots in the hope that they will continue to grow bigger and may one day give me three flower spikes per bulb. My Amaryllis bulb which was struggling to grow for the last few years did very well over last summer and should flower for the first time in two years. I also give an update on my new Amaryllis bulb which is growing well and should have 8 flowers on two flower stems.

Thanks, yes it recovered well after cutting it to allow the new leaves to grow through. Its now flowered almost every year since.

Must be great to be able to grow them outside, I have seen them grown outside in Taiwan and they do great with the extra light levels. There is a hardy variety that is supposed to survive UK winters which I might try next year, although my winters are so wet I worry they might rot.

I live in Central Florida. Rather sandy soil, very high humidity in summer, cool & windy in winter with rare freezing nights. I did purchase some from a big box store after Christmas & they were fine. Sometimes it a matter of flower coloring for the would be buyer. I take them home, clean off dead leaves. I’ve never trimmed the roots back, just pick a well drained sunny spot & plant them. I don’t special water. Spent flower stalks are cut off, but green leaves stay on until early spring. I got some lovely deep red ones the came from my grandfather (he lived in Alabama). The whole line of garden across the front of his house was full of these beautiful red flowers. Some of the bulbs are twice the size of your big one. They make lots of babies that I don’t remove for a year or so. 2-3 flower spikes & 4 flowers per stalk. I don’t buy the store leftovers any more as I love grandfather’s colors better. If it gets cold I put my Christmas lights around them & cover with a blanket.

Me and my wife planted an amaryllis in central Arizona when we first met 6 years ago. It flowered a few times and mostly grew enormous leaves all year round. We have since moved to Oklahoma where winters actually get cold, so this is the first time I've seen the thing fully go dormant. So, I just transplanted and slightly trimmed one of the 2 bulbs and left the mother bulb in the original pot. We shall see how this goes. Thanks for the information!

I have a few animals bulbs the first couple years they bloom beautifully I followed the instructions on KZread video similar to yours but now all I get is leaves I get beautiful healthy leaves but I never get a flower stalk I don't understand I follow directions let them go dormant etc but I only end up with the leaves 😕

If they are going dormant and loosing all their leaves but not flowering when they come back into growth it could be,: lack of light over the growing season, not enough high potassium feed or high temperatures whilst dormant, i.e. above 20C (68F). Another reason could be a choked bulb where the neck is too tight for the flower buds to emerge, but usually the leaves are also stunted when this happens.

Great video! We were gifted an amaryllis at Christmas. It flowered with four flowers and also grew a daughter bulb. I've tried to look for dormancy info but all I've found is to put them in a basement and not water it but we don't have a basement. Would you be able to do a video on it? 😊

  • @Gardeningat58N

They don't need a basement for storage, I've had mine for 6 years and I've never had a basement in that time. In autumn reduce the watering and move to a cooler position if you can. The leaves should then go yellow and you should stop watering when this happens. Once all the leaves have died keep it cool and dry for a month or two. After this time or if new growth appears, move the bulb to a warm location and slowly start watering again. It doesn't need to be very cool, in the past mine have been around 18C (64F) usually the natural drop in house temperature between summer and winter is enough. Here is a video where I discuss dormancy kzread.info/dash/bejne/oH6Dk9mPXc2wp9o.html

Question! After you repot your plants do you bring inside of the house! This is good information mine I need to repot but I am afraid when is the right time to repot. I think I did wrong my Amaryllis because I planted in big pots and covered the soil. But still thriving. Thanks your tips and learned a lot your videos relating to repotting the Amaryllis plant. Thanks your response as well.

Yes I grow mine indoors as in my climate the summers are not very warm, but outside is also OK for them over summer. They need lots of sunshine over the summer to build up their bulbs, but don't put them from a low light area to a high light area straight away without slowly getting them used to strong sunshine, otherwise they can get burnt by the sun. Indoors a sunny windowsill is best, just avoid the midday sun.

If the soil is damp and not wet then it should be ok, keep the soil a little dry but not bone dry, then once growth starts water as normal.
