Repotting Grocery Store Orchids

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Repot your grocery store orchid to keep it alive and healthy. Orchid expert Randall Bayer shows how. Orchids live on trees in tropical areas. Their roots absorb water from the almost daily rains in those areas. The tree bark where they are growing then quickly dries out. The orchids store the water in special structures called pseudo bulbs or in their leaves.
Orchids for sale in stores are usually potted in sphagnum peat moss. The peat moss holds water and does not let the orchid roots dry out between watering like they do in the wild. This means that without special attention, the roots will rot, and the plant will die in a short time. To keep the plant from dying the orchid must be repotted. Randall repots an orchid purchased in a grocery store and shows and explains all the steps.

@@sharynloshakoff5404 ooohh no… Don’t use the “ice cube” watering method. It can actually harm, freeze the orchids vellemen which protects the root inside. Orchids are tropical plants. Freezing cold water should never be used while watering, this can shock the orchid. Try using room temp to tepid warm water to water or quick soak your orchids. Good luck 👍🏼 happy planting.

Using just orchid bark wasn’t letting my orchid take up enough moisture, water just runs right through. A mix of orchid bark and sphagnum moss seems to be a good idea to keep some moisture around. I rescued an orchid with only one inch long root and setting it in a Tupperware with sphagnum moss and keeping it moist has grown four new roots in only a month! I’m so excited he’s not dead 😅

Hard water is not good for orchids. And do not use ice cubes as has been advocated by some growers. The best water to use is room temperature reverse osmosis water or bottled distilled water. Do not use the type of distilled water that has had perfume or scent added and that is used in steam irons. The scent is harmful to orchids.

Recently repot some of my phalenopsis orchids because one I discovered the medium had broken down and had mold. the roots started to not look good. When I repot it had a smell so that was worrisome. some of the other orchids were also in older medium so I decided to repot them before they get to that stage. I decided to repot while they were done blooming. And another I needed to check the roots and it wasn't doing well in the pot I put it on as well as the orchid medium the bark ships were too large and I assume it had too many air pockets that collected water. But it was my first real trying to save an orchid from my colleagues who potted her in sand from the work garden guess it also went through shock from the ordeal of everything. It has a terminal spike so i am not sure how much longer this poor orchid is going to stay alive for. I'm trying my best to give it the best care I can until it's leaves are done. It made a keiki I want to give back to my colleague. So she can take it home.

Very informative! I am not sure if I should repot my orchid or to wait, it was bought as a gift on a really cold day and many of the flowers look droopy. I was thinking maybe to let it settle in the warm house for a week or 2 but it basically came in the same type of pot that the video showed. I don't want to mess with it too much since I have no idea how it was treated inside the store.

Why not pride out the green roots out of the bark filling to give the roots a helping hand to become air roots ?

Whay happens if your store bought orchid loses it's flowers and the leaves are starting to wilt? It definitely needs a repot which I'm about to do but she's lost all of hrt flowers but showing new growth? I really need help because they are one of my favorite flowers but I can never seem to keep them alive and it makes me sad. The roots still look amazing! No root rot and new growth.

The flowers will die after awhile, but the plant can survive and re-bloom. The single biggest problem is over-watering. Make sure the "soil" dries out before you water it again. Grocery store orchids are planted in peat moss which holds too much water. Try to transplant it to bark if you can. If not make sure there is a hole in the bottom of the plastic cup so the water can drain out and limit how often you water.

You should wait until the flowers have finished.

I'm confused can I repot an already bloomed orchid? I wanted to change my pot, but I have 4 buds that haven't bloomed yet.

Sorry if this question has already been asked. But where do you get the clay pots for orchids with the slits? I am in Canada and have never seen them. Thank you in advance.

Hey, our suggestion is a quick Google Search for Orchid Pots, and you'll have several suggestions pop up.

I assume you mean the flower stalk. Just wait and take care of it.

Orchid bark probably costs more than the orchid itself.
