Replacing YZ250 Shift Shaft

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Common ailments for the pinnacle of Japanese two strokes include pump-gas detonation and a shift shaft that bruises easily. VP can help you with the first one, but I solve the latter here.

    @3:13 The bearing I point to is for the powervalve governor. The waterpump bearing is actually in the right side case.

    Hey, I’ve got a shift shaft that slips the tines on the torsion spring because it can move side to side about 1/16”- just enough for the tines to fall off. Does your shift shaft have any lateral movement or is it pretty tight? Great video and humor;)

    Not sure if your still active but does the kick start gear touch the other gear when kicked and retract back in after kick because it wouldn't make sense for it to be moving with all the other gear

  • @katayama_co

    @katayama_co

    2 жыл бұрын

    The kickstart gear and idler gear remain connected to the clutch basket the entire time. There is a ratchet mechanism on the kickstart gear (behind the gear) that allows the actual kickstart lever to disconnect from the spinning kickstart gear while the engine is running. The action of kicking the kickstart lever down pushes the ratchet assembly into the kickstart gear to engage with it. The assembly then retracts after the kick and the kickstart gear remains in motion with the clutch basket. This video shows the action: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lXp9lMeApZi2qto.html&ab_channel=spamsafe

    I had a small issue removing my bent shift shaft simply due to the bend making it hard to pull it through the case (it wasn't actually hitting anything inside or making any clicking noises) Based on your description, the only thing I could think of would be the internal shift cam drum. The shift shaft comes through the bottom right hole in the picture linked below. The shift cam drum is directly to the left of it as pictured. cdn.thumpertalk.com/uploads/monthly_06_2012/post-333271-0-71973000-1340610662.jpg

    So I have a 91 yz250 with a stripped shift shaft. I took it to a shop and they're telling me it's gonna cost $1000+ to fix cause they have to "split/Crack the casing" or somethingto that effect cause its an older yamaha? Do you have any expertise on the matter?

  • @katayama_co

    @katayama_co

    2 жыл бұрын

    The 91 YZ250, and basically any moto bike ever made, has a very similar shift shaft design to my modern YZ250. Fixing a stripped shift shaft is the exact same process that I perform in this video, and it does not involve "splitting the cases." "Case-splitting" is much more involved and refers to removing the engine from the frame and separating the two halves of the bottom end of the motor, which house the crank and transmission (which again, is not necessary for a shift shaft repair). Labor hours for a shop to replace a shift shaft only should be 1-3 hrs maximum.

  • @katayama_co

    @katayama_co

    I always recommend changing the gaskets after opening up cases, unless the gaskets only have a few engine hours on them. Not worth the risk to leave old gaskets on unless you absolutely have to due to time constraints.
