Replacing upper and lower ball joints on 2001 Dodge Durango 4x4

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The actual times was about 40 minutes. But I could not expect anyone to watch all of that!
I also had to edit out myself coughing and hacking severely a few times. I did this with a head cold. :-(

Great Video! These how to videos are so much nicer when they show you every step that was needed to get the job done. I hate when the commentator says "Now, disconnect the ball joint" then they do a scene jump where the part is out of the vehicle and the commentator is standing there nice and pretty without a single grease stain.

Thank u for this video. I have a 1999 Durango & just replaced water pump, thermostat, both upper & lower radiator hoses & back flushed the heater core with air, CLR, & rinsed it with a garden hose. Now this is my 1st attempt at the upper & lower ball joints but I bought the Ball joint service kit from Harbor Freight. A word to the wise, If you have a 1998-2003 Durango, don't buy a Autozone thermostat, buy 1 from Chrysler. The ones from Autozone stayed stuck opened & I went through 2 new ones before taking them back & getting a refund.

I, too, had my autozone thermostat stuck open early on! But before I had a chance to replace it, it popped open suddenly, and I've had no problems for the 2 years since! If i had it to do over again, I would avoid the Autozone thermostat.

Thank you for this video. I could not have replaced my 2002 Dodge Durango ball joints without it. It was really hard because, as you mentioned, the kits aren't made for dodges. I had to grind a bit off the top of the hole in the arm so the ring had some level of stabilization. Aside from that, it was relatively easy.

I only use a "ball joint tool" for the lower ball joint that is pressed in. The upper ball joint I just remove the nut then use a pry bar to hold steady pressure as I want the joint to separate, then smack the knuckle there with the hammer and usually with a few blows the joint pops right apart. No pickle fork or anything else. I use the same technique to disassemble tie rod ends as well.

Nice speed, even @40 minutes actual runtime. I don't have a garage. So, I have to cart all my power tools and a generator around front if I want to use them. Most times, I have to do it all by hand. Your clip was all about inspiring me to get'r done, again. But looming rain may compel me to abandon that and just do the easier uppers this swing.

  • @hackfreehvac
    @hackfreehvac11 жыл бұрын

The lower ball joint is not pulling out of it? You may need a second person. One to hold a big pry bar in there to keep tension on it as if he's trying to separate the joint, and the second person to smack the outer part with the hammer. The shock of hitting it with the hammer is what makes the pressed part come apart but you need constant tension pulling the joint apart with the pry bar for it to happen.

The balljoints have to be worn pretty good before they fail as seen in some of the photos of the wheels tipping over, etc. Those people usually ignored the popping sounds for months. As long as you check them out for wear you are fine. I had a 2003 Dakota before this. I drove it hard. And this Durango has done 70MPH around that curve where southbound 101 drops into the I-10 in Avondale. :-)

Chuck Behymer I never have to on these. Just put a pry bar in there to pull it in the direction that makes it want to separate (a second person helps for this) and wack the metal that the ball joint goes through and a few wacks usually knock it right loose. Works for tie rod ends etc where people usually use a pickle fork thing. But this is faster and don't tear up the rubber.

If the upper is bolted in, it's already been replaced. Unless they changed them at some point newer than 2003. Stock ones are usually riveted in . But who knows. I assumed mine had already been replaced because they had bolts and not rivets. Once the bolts or rivets are out and of course you already removed the hub assy from the ball joint, it comes right out. It's the bottom ones that need a tool. The bottom ones last longer though.

No, I never had to do that on this beast. And I no longer have the Durango. Rear bearings hardly ever fail during the lifetime of the vehicle unless it runs out of grease, etc. If they are the outside bearing they might need the tool to press them off and back on. I haven't done that or seen it done in like 20 years.

I've taken apart ball joint connections for approx 30 years and never use a torque wrench on such a thing. Once it is seated there is lots of friction holding it in place. As long as the cotter pin holds that nut it will NEVER COME LOOSE. Leave the torque wrench for the head gaskets and other critical things. LOL

hackfreehvac I have done the same thing in years past by cranking down on them. Being too tight will and cause premature wear. I started torquing suspension components about 5 years ago and components are lasting longer and are able to articulate better. The friction can be too tight and kill your parts. Rick Deckard LOL. Not too mention he is a "Christian" who is telling his listeners to basically lay up their treasures here on the earth. Opposite of what the bible teaches.

HA HA! Thanks bro. And your name reminds me of BRUNSWICK. So I may as well add that I throw a 16 Lb Roto Grip and TRY to maintain a 200 Average when possible. :-) Seriously I'm just a person who's not numbed down by vaccines or fluoride so my mind is always spinning. :-) I'm not the best business or office minded but I am a GEEK with gadgets.

+Phil C I think my breaker bar was missing or broke right at that moment. That torque wrench is about 25 years old and the ratcheting part failed about 20 years ago! That is why I lifted it out and back down like a breaker bar.

It is very dangerous if you are not familiar with suspension components. Lots of force applied to these components. People can loose a limb or worse.
