Replacing the Spindle on a Troy Bilt Pony Lawn Tractor
Mower deck spindles wear out. You'll know because they make a very loud noise. Replacing them is fairly easy. Drop the deck, remove the blade, remove 4 bolts, and the spindle drops out.
This spindle for a Troy-Bilt Pony costs $30 and takes about an hour to replace with common tools. The spindle is made by Fourtry and can be found on Amazon at www.amazon.com/dp/B098PZYMT4.
This spindle has a grease fitting. Grease regularly for longer bearing life.
The spindle replaces part numbers 918-06991, 618-06991, and 285-216, found on many Troy-Bilt, Craftsman, Murray, Huskee, Yard Machines, and Yard Man mowers.

Just want to thank you for your video on replacing the Spindle assembly... I bought 2 from the site that you recommended... Got it fixed today, running like new... Troybilt wanted over $ 110 .... Again many thanks...
V good/helpful video. Removing old spindle was helpful, I though i have to remove the pulley and slip the spindle unit downwards, was having a hard time unscrewing pulley nut. All that was not necessary since the 4 screws is all it takes to slip unit off deck's top. One more tricks -- do NOT need to remove deck to do what video recommends. I use a Honda Civic jack the mower to 30-degree and unscrewed the 4 bolts from the bottom, ie, no need to remove deck.
Thank you.
I was using my Pony on a job today when it started making this god-awful noise under the deck. I shut down the PTO, took it over to my truck and ran it up on the ramps. The right hand blade was very difficult to turn, and was not bent.I'll be ordering and replacing that spindle soon. Maybe I'll even replace both of them and save more trouble later.
Thank you, I have a t1000 craftsman I just bought used and having hell finding info on it.
Buy this high quality spindle from Fourtry on Amazon at www.amazon.com/dp/B098PZYMT4.
Thank you
Your sheds like mine right next to the coop.
Thanks!
Pretty sure those new spindles dont come with grease in them. Need to top the grease off via the grease fitting
I just replaced mine on this mower and I have a question. The originals that I removed had no grease fittings. The new ones I installed do have grease fittings. Do these come fully greased or do they need to be greased before using the first time?
The part I can't do is what he skipped over. I can't get the new spindle in.
Hi John great video, I just bought a used 2019 Troy-Bilt pony 42” and I noticed that the spindle was broken. The belts were off, and I think it was missing some parts. I ordered the pulley the belt and the belt guard so far but I think it’s missing a spring or two, but I can’t find the right diagram to know which deck I have and where the springs go. My question is do you have a picture you can share with me of a 42” deck assembled so I can see all the parts installed? Thanks so much for your time.
Your pully brakes are excessively worn and the pully is grinding against the rivets inside the brake. Makes a tone of noise when you disengage the blades. Also makes the 2 pullys rub against one another
30” different?
Im not even sure that is what it is but we could try and fix it and still have problems try and find us another one and fix it for back ups. Damn we have people here for a class
I'm glad my deck don't look like that.
If I’m going through all that trouble (which I am) I’m replacing both of those spindles. 😏
