Replacing my Breville Hotcup power switch.

Ғылым және технология

This device is an automated water kettle that heats and then vends a single cup of boiling water on each operation. It's fast (50 seconds) and efficient as it only heats the amount of water that is needed for a drink. In the UK our standard power sockets can supply 240V at 13A allowing 3kW appliances to be plugged into any socket.
I've this unit for a while, and recently it started misbehaving when turned on. Sometimes it would work immediately and other times it would pause before making a slight pop noise and then working. Finally it just stopped working and a wisp of smoke came out of the switch.
It was easier to open than expected and revealed a simple, but very clever switch that latches in the on position, but can be reset by a bimetallic disk that is exposed to steam from the boiling water.
Initially I thought it was a custom switch just for the appliance, but it turns out that it may just be a standard kettle switch mechanism. The original one was made by Strix, a local manufacturer of kettle components, but the replacement was another brand.
In hindsight I now know that I could have got these switches from a variety of sellers, but sadly not a Strix original. It's important to note that some of the switches being sold on eBay are substandard. The contact strip can get hot enough to melt the plastic pin that is supposed to push it down to switch off, resulting in the kettle/cup-boiler continuing to run instead of switching off.
There's a reason that appliance manufacturers still use a British brand's switches. It's the only way to guarantee reliability.
If you have one of these Breville Hotcup units and use it a lot then I'd recommend getting a spare switch in advance. It's easy to change if you're technically inclined. (Make sure the kettle is not on the power base when working on it.)
A search for - Strix R4803 - may bring up the original component.
Alternately a search for - kettle switch - will find a variety of similar units.
Clones will not be up to the same quality/safety standard as an original Strix switch.
As always with these projects, you do it at your own risk. Make sure all power is isolated and try to source original components. If in doubt, just buy a complete new unit.

Our local town has a Repair Cafe, small electrical items are often amazingly easy to fix. Our toaster stopped working the other week, all that was wrong was the tip of the contact broke that completes the circuit when you push it down. The one inside was adjusted and cleaned and it'll be working for another few years. Preventative maintenance is also good practice on domestic white goods. Our tumble drier purchased in 1998 is still going strong, it blew an element after a couple of years and has only ever run on the low heat setting ever since. But every couple of years I de-fluff it,lube the bearings and check the (original) belt before putting it back together and it's still running 22 years later. I have toyed with the idea of fitting a £30 element to get the high heat back but I know that if I spend £30 on it then it *will* have a catastrophic failure.

To be fair, the higher models are less efficient if you have small cups because they ALWAYS boil 350ml, the dispense setting just puts some of that back into the tank automatically. I use a 500ml mug, so still need to operate it twice and manually cut-off as its hard to judge what setting is correct for what you want.

Most common problem is the switch, around 70% of the time, or the element blowing out, around 20 % of the time. Rest is plastic bits breaking, or the seals going bad and leaking. New switches and elements are available, but in general you have to order them via small packet from PRC, so you are without for a week or three till they arrive. Most people just go buy a cheap new one instead.

Went through the same issue this January but I managed to catch it in time. The contact had a coating of corrosion so that only a small area was bridging and I guess this caused the arcing to get hotter and hotter. Gave the whole switch a clean back to the copper and it has been working without issue. I would suggest a routine checkup once a year to clean out any corrosion.

I have a similar kettle to this in the US. It has that exact same base connector. The switch is installed in the bottom of the kettle under the handle, and is interlocked so that it automatically pings "Off" if you lift it up. Its indicator is an old-school neon built into the switch, which you push down to begin boiling. It's nowhere near as fast as your 3kW monster here. My guess is that it's connected to a bimetallic that detects if the heating element exceeds the boiling point of water. Since simple thermodynamics, liquid water cannot exist at atmospheric pressure above its boiling point, so if the element can get hotter than that, clearly the water at the element isn't liquid anymore! Another delightfully simple little device.

The systems used in this and other switches which cause them to want to be at either end of their travel and avoid the middle is called an over centre mechanism. They are fascinating in how common they are and how rarely they are noticed. The simplest and easiest to understand version is the latch on a steamer trunk or foot locker. It resists closing until it snaps over then it resists being opened again.

I had one of these that became intermittent in operation, and managed to get it going again by cleaning the switch contacts. They were well blackened but not destroyed like in the video. When it first started acting up my wife bought a bigger, better one with adjustable cup size and a cancel button, so I took the old one to work to fix it and use it in the office. I got made redundant from that job in 2017 - watching this video has made me wonder if my repaired kettle is still there and if it's being used.

Hi Clive. I'm not sure what you use to film, but a lot of cameras have a HDMI output (mini HDMI usually). You could potentially connect this to an external monitor, and have a live image while filming. If you mount this on the wall in front of you, or have it sit to the side of what you're working with, it'd be much easier to see what the camera is doing and if things are in focus. It gives you a reference to how things are looking without having to wait until after you're done filming. That being said, I love these videos. I've learned so much from you thus far. Thank you :)

I'm amazed you had one long enough for the switch to fail. We went through I think it was three of these, because the plastic pipe kept popping out of the boiler tank. :( We tried the model up and went through a couple which did the same, before finally getting one that kept working. (at least they all broke in warranty) Eventually they released a higher model which uses stainless steel pipes instead (probably with plastic pipe inside it) which we have now.

Cool. My grandmother had one and liked it. Unfortunately the fact the tank is full of fairly constantly lukewarm water can lead to growths. She keeps a very clean house but was unable to see the very swampy green compartment. Pity because it's handy with arthritis and other conditions. I think a regular descaling would maybe help keep it at bay.

I adore a good 3 kw kettle. It was one of the things I brought with me, along with my tools, when I came back to North America after working electrics and IT in the UK and mainland Europe for a while. Not sure why the NEC & CSA don't require 240v sockets in kitchens, garages, and workshops as standard kit over here. They may catch up to that eventually. I certainly have 240v sockets fitted in my North American houses, specifically because of 3 kw kettles, induction wok hobs, and lab & shop equipment. And of course, there is no way I would bother charging an EV from the typical piddling 120 volt domestic sockets. Enjoyable as always Clive! But now I'm going to need another cup of tea.

@@NiHaoMike64 Mostly in older installations, exploiting the shared neutral nature of the 120/240v split-single-phase system. But it's bad practice in the current era of RCD/GFCI and Arc-fault breakers. Additionally most of those shared neutral circuits never fed 240v sockets. To be fair it didn't save much copper per installation either. Any monetary savings would be eaten up by the cost of the then requisite double pole with neutral monitoring RCD/GFCI breaker (RCBO) or Combo Arc-fault breaker. Since did quite allot of industrial electrics I carry over some of those practices to domestic. Not strictly necessary in North American houses, but in mine I have two service panels (Consumer units). One for all single pole 120 volt loads, and a second panel which houses all 240 volt double pole loads. This makes organization & load management simple, and makes full or partial backup power a snap to implement with manual or automatic interlocks for generator inputs, and also simplifies islanding your solar inverters for back-up use. I don't like unplanned or prolonged power cuts if they prevent me from getting things done. Or from boiling my kettle. Though, other water heating options are available.

@@NiHaoMike64 Interesting. Not sure how in a double pole device serving a split single phase set of 120 volt loads how that would be able to sum the power on the two 180 o phase conductors without also monitoring the neutral. The ones I'm aware of without neutrals can be used on 240 volt only loads. I'm not partial to using GE equipment, so it's very possible it's something I've not seen. If I'm not using DIN rail based protective devices, then it's usually schneider/square d QO. It's the only thing available in North American molded case breakers that I don't find to be hugely archaic for domestic use from a trip curve standpoint. Though you have piqued my interest; I'll look for the device type you've mentioned. If it's indeed what you say it is, I may have to buy one to take to pieces just to suss out it's mode of operation.

They detect when the wheel's about to slip then at the same time as stopping the roller, use an AC powered valve in the pipe to the gauge to hold the reading. With these things powered up, unused, the gauges gradually creep up - it's the electric non-return valve acting as a pump !

Nearly every home and office in the US and Canada has a "coffee pot" (electric drip brew coffee maker; mostly unknown in Europe). Japan has even lower voltage, but electric kettles are ubiquitous.
