Replacing Mk4 golf rear suspension bushes, on the car. Project daily

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The daily has needed new rear suspension bushes for ages. Now we've finally got around to it, and we managed to do it on the car without removing the beam or the brake hoses.

Good work HOWEVER! never remove the rear brackets from the car, this will knock the tracking out needing an expensive 4 wheel alignment!!!! The best way to do it is to pull the bolt out till it touches the fuel tank, then cut it off with a grinder, then pull the rest out. once you have changed the bush and pushed the axle back into the bracket all you have to do is to insert the bolt from the wheel side and put the nut on the inside. It does not matter which way the bolt goes on this part as long as its tightened after your finished! and always always always USE BRAND NEW BOLTS as part of the change, Its them two bolts that holds the whole back axle to the car, If you have had this work done at the dealer have a look under your car and you will see that they fit the new bolts the other way round! Also there is an upgraded bush that is not polly, its a much better bush than the standard ones, part number is (6Q0501541E) or (1ML501541) or (febi 31694) any of these are much better heavy duty bushes but are not quite as hard as polly bushes which are shite on the back end of a golf.

Superb video and plenty of good ideas of the use tools most of us have in our garage. Apart from having to either borrow or buy the bush puller it all seems quite easy to do. Thankyou you have probably saved me a small fortune doing it myself instead of letting the MOT garage do the job . I look forward to more VW video jobs .

This was the video I was looking for - unfortunately I learnt the hard the way by repairing the rear brake lines and knocking the rear alignment out ;-) - I found Poly Bushings didn't make much difference to the comfort, but super easy to install and do not require aligning. I also replaced rear suspension top mounts and springs. Really like the way you implemented the scissor jack and hydraulic jack, highly recommend 4 wheel alignment after any suspension work.

I’ve just done the rear bushes on my VW T5, done the arb bushes as well. What an absolute ball ache on a gravel drive. Brake pipe snapped both sides trying to get them out..didn’t have a removal tool like you so set the bushes on fire & then knocked the inner casing out (one took 2 hours as it was rusted to the arm 🤦🏻‍♂️) I was putting poly bushes in so they went back in a lot easier than the standard bushes.

If it helps, I was able to get plenty of height with axel stands using two hydraulic jacks and blocks of wood. Brick the front wheels and combine jacks and axel stands for extra safety when clubbing the old bushings out. the plastic bush are easier to remove. Some have older metal housed busing, these take a bit more work but same process.
