I bought a USB one on ebay for around $5. I know, I KNOW that ebay sells cheap chinese junk but there was a distinct chance that whichever one I bought was going to end up destroyed, so 5 bucks beats 50 bucks all day long. Besides, I am retired and don't use one for a living. Besides, it was worth every penny watching the grandkids playing with it when I was done with it.

Bought "Depstech" bore scope off Amazon for $30... Highly recommend!

Great video Thanks a million for the info.., I’m trying to determine if the 7.3 Is hydro locked as it seems to be locked up big time. So I’m going to pull the GP to see if the there is oil on top of the pistons. Also might re-place the o’rings in the injectors

My mechanic friend told me I should ask you. I've been through my system and keep getting a p1271 and p1271 as of late on my 99 F350 7.3. First I rebuilt the injectors (first time) using 409 and then rewired the harness from stem to stern (upon advice of my mech buddy) and kept getting 1271, 1273, 1274, and 1277 also 1293, 1294. running the tests it said to put a new IDM...got one reman and programmed for my VIN. seemed to run better but had those codes. Out of desperation, I spliced/soldered 3 wires on the side of existing wires of that bank--the high side, and injector 1 & 7 just inches away from the IDM and the valve harness.Upon a cold koe-off test it finally seemed I did It ultimately knocked out everything. When it seemed to warm up the engine light came on again and throws 1271 and 1277. I'm at the point where I'm thinking it is a bad clearance between the armature and solenoid on the offending injectors--slightly as to which when it gets hot, it expands ever so slightly causing some goofiness with IDM. I'll change out the PCM if I have to, but am thinking about putting two spacer plates on the edges of the offending injector, while quickly engaging the solenoid measuring distance between armature and solenoid. My buddy said I needed to shoot you a line and you were passionate about this. Thanks, Scott

Same here Dave Fabian - just got my "new" (1999, 275,000 miles) 7.3. It's a great truck - we also own a 2005 6.0 which is good in many respects, but not the 7.3 by any measure. Restated, the 7.3 is probably the best diesel engine Ford ever installed, and the 6.0 is probably the worst - just glad I'm reasonably mechanically inclined. Regardless, these vids have been very helpful.

Try using loktite primer T or Primer N it truly help the loktite bond.

Two years late, but THIS is part of why I'm hopefully getting a 02 F350 on monday. Because you can still work on the damn things unlike this new crap.

Denatured alcohol leaves no residue, I suggest trying it... You'll be amazed.

So I’m about to do o rings on mine. Do I have to replace the cups? I have 175k on my truck

What if one or more injector cups were installed without loctite?

Great video Stephen ! On the number 7 injector cup how do you install ? Not enough room to swing a hammer.

You remove the HVAC unit...6 bolts hold it in

Did I miss something? There are no links to the tools you used in the desc. The only links are for your recording gear.

I just did the head gaskets and injector gaskets on my '95. Went well.

Awesome video. New subscriber here. Any idea why my 2000 7.3 Ford burns like 8qt of oil in a month without seeing the oil nowhere? it doesn’t smoke out the exhaust either, oil disappears. Had it checked my 3 mechanics and they don’t know either , someone said a ring may be bad in one of the cylinders. What’s your opinion?

If you drain your fuel bowl I bet your fuel will be black. The injector orings are shot and it's pumping oil into your fuel system and it's going back to the tank. You'll have to change your injector orings for sure but here's the exact video for it haha

What brand of orings used

When you pull a cup, I'm guessing it can't be reused since you used a tap to pull it out? So 1 bad cup means all of them potentially need to be replaced?

Yes replace all. You can buy the two tools at rosewood diesel. And put a penny in the one you are taking out to prevent shavings from getting into the combustion chamber. You can do it!

LOL.. Says 7.3s don't "need" glow plugs. Lives in Texas.. All in fun.. In MD, and anywhere north.. They definitely need them

They don't, with one caveat. They must be in near perfect working condition. I've cold started them no waiting in 20 degree weather, they aren't happy but they do start pretty quick. But throw a 20 year old HPOP and injectors on there and it's probably not going to start.

I know with out proper working glow plugs in Northern Missouri you will NOT get your 7.3 to start. I might be possible if you have a rebuilt engine, but 322,000 original engine in my 2000 F250 will not start below 10° with good glow plugs. Even at 10° or slightly above I have to cycle glow plugs about 4 times before it begins to light the cylinders.

Im not sure if alot of people know but ford leased the injector technology from caterpillar , so the injectors are cat injectors not ford or international.

Get an aftermarket battery from battery depot on line. Not sure if thats the right company name , batteries for all tool makes .
