Also important to put the same axle back on the same side of the car. The metal has been stress hardened by years of torsional force in 1 direction, putting the axle on the other side and stressing it the other way will increase the chance of a failure.

Yes because driving backwards don't put stress on the shafts...

Thanks for the video. When I did my 4runner's front axles, I didn't put the grease on until after I has the boot clamped onto the shaft. Made it less messy. Also, I used a metal clamp for clamping the boot on the shaft. Great job. Thanks again.

Thanks, it's super heavy duty axle grease designed not to come off of whatever it touches, get yourself a box of gloves and don't be afraid to use as many as you need!

I am in the middle of it, splined hub wont come off......yes clip is off, thanks for sharing, now I know I just have to keep tapping that hub until it releases.

Is there any risk while performing this boot replacement? Will my axle perform as it is supposed to or is it a better idea to buy a new axle? I appreciate this video. Thank you for your time.

I rebuilt the boot, but now that its in the car the boot is not hard like the original was and it makes a sucking sound when I move the axle back and forth no matter how tight the clamps are. Is that normal for this boot?

Do new complete cv axles come pregreased and packed fully like you are doing here?

i never bought a 944 axle but normally axles come pregreased, I would think these would, you'll probably be able to tell when you see it in person

The boot comes with a ring and a half circle doodad, they are both black. What are they for?

No idea, I didn't use them, they might be for other cars that the boot fits. The only rings and circles I used are the clip ring and the clamp to seal the small end of the boot.

Sorry I don't remember a green dot. I fully rebuilt each side one at a time, and since the shims on each side are different, I used them as a reference as to which side attaches to the transaxle vs hub.

a DIY Car Guy I just got back from the junkyard and looked at a 1985.1 944. Looks like the inner race, metal thing in the middle of the CV Joint is flat on both sides and is made of a different metal as it is silver in color. Also, they have different teeth counts, so may not be compatible with whatever part you want to switch out on the joint. And also the cvs had the ring @ the end included with the new cv boot kit. It goes in first before the joint and has the concave end facing out. That is probably why both sides of the CV Joint is flat. The half circle thing is a stupid version of the C clips/circlips,/snap rings it has no holes for c clips. Hope this helps someone who reads this.

Thanks for the info. I don't know why my axles didn't use the concave piece. Either it's because it's a turbo, design revision, or someone rebuilt them before me and didn't put them on.

8:36 Did you inspect the bearing surfaces after you cleaned them up? They look pitted like the balls have been binding. I am making content and mine are all wasted like yours look. I had to change all four. This WILL make noise and cause future issues.

They do look pitted but they didn't, and still don't make noise
