A trick so you don’t spray your engine with that tack spray is to simply lay the gasket onto cardboard and spray it the put it on the part.

I doubt it. Some people start it by blocking the air intake with their hand after turning the engine just a little bit past the compression stroke. Get it spinning with the intake blocked then take your hand off & it usually starts. The broken parts usually sit on the bottom of the engine.

I agree, those $29 dollar "kits" that Amazon has are junk. I could probably snap the weight off this one by hand without too much effort. And don't get me started on that wadded up gasket... My original cam (17.5 hp Intek) was broken just like in this video, so I slapped it in anyways. Set the intake lash to .003 and the exhaust to .005, new battery, still too hard for the starter to spin it fast enough to fire up. I can see the intake valve do a little extra bump on the compression stroke, but Im guessing it isnt opening enough. Got another 18.5 hp intek laying around with a (i think) a dropped valve seat. About to Frankenstein these two together if the bottom end is still ok. Tryin to make a half-assed race mower here!

@@andrewaliotta5033 so far the cam I bought is holding up. What I finally found out woth mine was the head was so warped it was never gonna seal. Came to that conclusion after putting it back together (with the new cam, and a new head gasket) had to use a battery jumper set to 175 amps to get it to crank over, started up and it had oil coming out of the breather filling the intake, oil filling up the fuel pump, and the dip stick about blew off when i unscrewed. Smoked like hell after a reving it up too. I got a real flat surface (well, I used a cinder block) stuck 120 grit sand paper to it with spray adhesive, and just worked the surface of the head back and fourth for like an hour until it was flat again. Wa la. Cranks over and doesn't puke oil anymore. My guess is the warped head wasn't letting the gasket seal, so cylinder compression was entering the crank case, so much, that it was basically fighting against itself to run.
