Nice work! To people who are raising questions about viability of the idea - the idea is definitely workable, but it's a bare bones idea and it will need protection circuitry around it if it's to be used on a daily basis. For example, it will need a cut-off circuit to ensure the alternator doesn't overcharge the supercaps, raising the voltage to dangerous levels (dangerous to rest of the electronics in the bike). Then to those who think the caps will discharge eventually - yes, that's correct; the caps will discharge faster than a battery. Much faster in fact. So the bike will need to be in regular use. Even in case the supercaps discharge, I am sure they can be recharged to the level required to crank, just by using a powerbank (10000mAh or such). It may need some additional electronics to make this adaptation work, but am pretty sure it's doable. Supporting head-lamp and such when the bike is off - well, that's where this will have a problem. That's where practicality will suffer I guess.

yup... maybe adding a smaller battery. using the caps for starting boost only. vanguard is coming out with a "small motor" thats i think is using preloaded caps and no battery. so, "the future is here!"

It takes some days/weeks that the voltage goes below 1V....after that level it drops very slowly an need months to reach 0,9V. If you Instal 10-12 pieces -> you have a lifetime akku

also definitely use 6 capacitors, not 5... the bike will kill it, because it charges lead acid battery using 14 or more volts.

*This battery reconditioning program exceeded my presumptions. It worked on any drill battery, several AA and AAA batteries, **batery.repair** and any camera battery. The steps are simple and the act itself is exciting to do. No matter what type of battery you`ve got, it is sure to function again!*

    1) Due to the different characteristics of each capacitor, the individual exceeding the limit voltage may cause the danger of capacitor explosion. Therefore, the use of supercapacitors must have balanced charging management. 2) The total capacity of 4 units of 500F series capacitors is 500F/4=125F. In a 12V system, the amount of electricity that can be stored is Q=C*V=1500 coulombs=1500 ampere second. That is only 1500/3600=0.41 ampere-hour. 3) Due to the low internal resistance of the capacitor, it can supply a large starting current. If the starting surge current of the motorcycle is 150A and needs 2 seconds, the electric power required for each start is 150A*2S=300 coulombs. The storage capacity of the capacitor is 1500 coulombs, therefore it can only be started for 1500/300=5 times. The headlight and signal light needs 5A, this capacitor can only last 300 seconds if forgot to switch off power. 4) Generally, the battery capacity of motorcycles needs 7~10Ah. To calculate the equivalent electric energy capacity, at least 20 times the capacitance combination, that is, 4 series and 20 parallel (total needs 80 units) combinations are required. 5) Otherwise battery and capacitor working together is the best way.

First, the total capacitance of the series string is 100 farad. Second, the voltage rating is too low to be safe. I would allow for some margin by using a total of 20 to 25 volts rating. Third, the battery acts as a zener diode keeping the charge circuit in the 13 to 14 range. The capacitor has no such self limiting, so terminal voltage can rise much more than that safe level. Fourth, there is nothing to keep equal voltages in each capacitor. Fifth, the wire size is too small. Observe tbe size of the bike wiring. It may have been a fun one time experiment, too many engineering rules have been broken to call it useable as built.

these work best on a motorcycle that has a battery, but does not have electric start as the only means for engine starting. I use a similar setup (5 X 350 Farad in series) for accessories on a street legalized kick start only motocross bike. (dirt bike does not need a battery to run) I added a light coil to the engine and the super cap is kept charged with that. its plenty for running a trail tech vapor, LED headlight, tailight/brakelight and turn signals. since I don't need it to be energized for starting, its the perfect thing keeping the headlight from flickering on the (pretty lame) single phase light coil.

Correct me if I'm wrong.... That capacitor stores 12.5 volts to start the engine, the starter instantly drains the capacitor and it depends on the charging circuit to recharge the empty capacitor. What if the engine is hard to start and you have to crank several times, I'm not sure the capacitor bank holds any reserve power for repetetive cranking as in a engine flooded situation, or at an idle with accessories on and low charging system output, seems like the power would not be there. How does it continue to supply 12 volts for repetitive cranking, or to power accessories by itself if the engine is not running or idling slow?

It only contains 12.65625 Wh energy. It is a poor equivalent of a 12V 1Ah battery but the voltage drops more dramatically than you expect from the cheapest lead-acid cells. Practically you can't utilize more than half of the stored energy because the voltage drops below the operable level.

I used a bank of 6 Maxwell 2.7V 2,700F in my Toyota corolla and my Mercury villager Minivan. They worked great. Well mostly. The issue is about holding charge. They would hold a charge good enough to start vehicle for a bit over 24 hours. Even run down to 11 Volts, would easily start vehicle. What you can do, is put solar panel(15 Watt) on dash, and in good sunlight, they will maintain full charge. Cloudy days not so much. I'm sick of replacing lawn mower and motorcycle batteries every few years. These capacitors are often rated for 1 million charge/discharge cycles. Yes, may have to charge them up before use, and they could cost 30% more than battery, but in the long run, will definitely be worth it. But what if motorcycle is out on the road, and capacitors get run down? Hate to be stuck. Use a small booster pack to charge them up. Maybe salvage some lithium cells(3.7V X 4) from discarded laptop, and momentarily hook them up and charge up capacitors. Use something to limit current to prevent damage. (light bulb)

One doubt. Here Capacitors are connected in series so, as you know 1/C = 1/c1+1/c2 +1/c3 +1/c4 +1/c5 That means you are getting the effect of a 100 F capacitor only: Here 5 capacitors were used only to overcome the dielectric capacity, sacrificing the total capacitance. Same effect can be achieved by using a single 13 or 15V 100F capacitor. Connecting more capacitorso this type in parallel will be more effective and more safer.

Ive been using this arrangement for 6yrs now with no issues. The capacitor does not get damaged as its rated at a higher voltage to the alternator. When the bike is turned off the current in the capacitor is absorbed by the dead sla battery.

Issue will be the voltage across the capacitor going down faster.Hence we need some switching regulator to boost voltage levels.

These ultra capacitors are ultra sensitive to excess voltage. A balance circuit is needed to keep any of them from exceeding 2.7V. I would also go with 6 instead of 5 to get more margin between the max voltage and the charge voltage. Exceeding 2.7 volts on any of them can cause them to short and explode. Shorting one will increase the voltage on the rest and can cause cascading explosions of each capacitor. They may not explode like lithium, but they can turn into a molten aluminum short across the alternator output...directly under your butt.
