Replacing Airport Concrete OVERNIGHT
Ғылым және технология
How do you replace worn concrete pavement at an international airport that operates 24/7? You do it fast… REALLY fast.
First, engineers evaluated every square meter of Melbourne’s concrete taxiways and runways to identify which sections needed replacement. The total? Hundreds over a few years.
The issue? They couldn’t interrupt the air traffic from around the world. No problem-enter Eifers Civil.
The Eifers team has perfected replacing concrete slabs in only hours. The operation is scheduled in 15-minute increments, from about 11 PM to 4 AM. By 6 AM, planes are rolling over the concrete.
First, they stage all equipment on trailers, ready for mobilization once the area is clear. After air traffic control gives them the all-clear, they spring into action.
They sawcut each section the night prior. This allows the excavators to cleanly remove the concrete without a hammer. They remove and haul the concrete off in trucks.
The excavator quickly grades the area, and then the drills step in to drill for the dowels, which tie the new concrete into the surrounding slabs.
Finally, they use volumetric trucks to make the needed concrete on demand. The mix uses a rapid-set high-strength concrete that sets up in only hours, giving it the strength to hold fully loaded aircraft only hours after placement.
They finish the concrete, load all their equipment back onto trailers, and vanish without anyone the wiser. Until the next night when they do it all over again!

Ajax Paving has done this on major interstate highways here in Michigan, absolutely incredible how quick they are able to mobilize, execute then demobilize in order to minimize the impact on morning traffic.

I'm surprised he doesn't do a mini series of every trip could make so much more money on the tube
I do maintenance here in Houston TX on freeways or service rds and it’s basically the same process we also use volumetric trucks . Saw cut, drill , lay down re bar and pour concrete, loved the vid !

this is insane, thanks witt
I'm surprised Aaron did not mention more about how this process may be similar or different at other airports.

I did this exact work years ago at LAX, process is identical, only thing different we would add dowel baskets at the joints where they line up to existing slabs! Slabs were I believe 20-24” thick don’t recall!

At Newcaslte Airport here in NSW Aus, Downer are replacing and extending the runway, but they are using hotmix with a mobile batch plant just off site.
Very cool methods being used here.
A mile of road will take you a mile, but a mile of runway will take you anywhere.
Great video Aaron cheers from Greg in Australia 🇦🇺

I was doing a rental job as a truck driver for a company that was working at Logan international airport in boston. On the airstrip. First thing I was asked is do I have a felony because if I did, I could not do the job. You pull up to a certain gate they check your ID make, sure you’re not a felon. Then the dog walks around the truck, guy walks around with a mirror looking under then they lift up my cab, and after that, I’m allowed to go in then I am escorted by a state trooper to where I am going. It was so cool. I was driving next to big commercial planes. 20 feet from me. Only thing that stinks is every time I leave to go dump my material when I come back, I have to go through that whole process again. Other than ID being checked only time they checked out again as the following day when I was there again. That was a really cool experience.
That's a well oiled crew! Fantastic stuff

Peeps who build pools use those kind of cement mixers a lot. Pretty slick.
Hey man you should connect with Hartman & Company in Springfield Missouri. They got a big project shutting down a whole interstate highway due to it collapsed under the pavement and ripping it up and redoing it all in a certain amount of hours nonstop around the clock

Huh. Interesting ! runway apron = thick slab = no rebar….learned something new today. thanks Aaron 👍

least I can do
Wow, I work at the airport and remember the night they did this. I was literally a few metres away working international ramp 🤣
Rapid Set cement, they provide cement for projects all over the world. Minimum 3,000 PSI in one hour, with a standard mix, higher strength if needed/wanted. Did many interstate bridge resurfacing projects when I worked for them, shut down a lane of traffic at Friday nite 11:00 pm and have the entire bridge resurfaced and open for traffic before Monday morning at 4:00 am. With traffic always getting by in at least one lane.
Was this at O'Hare in Chicago by chance? I didn't catch the airport name being called out. Just flew in there on a layover on Sunday and they were doing the exact same thing, job site looked really similar.
Why, Aaron, is there no reinforcement steel bar in the airport's paved concrete?
safety caps cast in with the pour?
Then there’s us in the UK, we will close any road or major infrastructure for 3 years with terrible temporary solutions just whilst 300 road workers sit on stand around smoking rollies.
I was always under the impression that concrete required a rear grid. How does this stuff work??
Aaron it’s tuber. I’m still trying to get you out here for wind turbine installations.
Don't work many night shifts?
Man i thought they were doing the whole runway! Lol Great video though!
That must be some fast acting concrete to hold a plane up
way to go
My grandson who's almost 27 is the project manager there and this is his crew.. pretty cool eh

Auckland International Airport could learn a thing or two, instead of taking months to do the exact same job.
Didn't know there was airport-grade concrete that could cure that fast. Neato

Your tired??? Your cold?? Dude, you only stayed there for couple hours man what about the final product? At least show the one from last night??? Bad work man
I can understand why more people aren’t subscribing: stop talking, you barely made it through the event obviously and you did’t show the finished product!! Wtf man? I sat through the entire video and was majorly disappointed that you couldn’t get to the end. If I’m going to waste my time the least you could do is stick it out…man up.
video too short!!! at least 20 minute videos! Explain jobsite, show job site. explain something, show it, little montage, explain something, show it, mini montage.
