Replacing a Starter on a 12v Cummins

A how to video for those changing the starter on their Cummins. Relatively simple, however we all started somewhere when it comes to fixing things. There's no shame in learning how to do things yourself, I hope this video can help someone get their truck back up and going. Thanks for watching!

Welcome to the American Tradesmen Channel! First of all, we appreciate you taking your time to check out our content. We put a lot of thought into our channel before we ever made a single video. You're not going to hear profanity on our channel. What you will hear is a little humor and a little how-to. There's literally no telling what we'll be doing, we dabble in a little of everything. We can guarantee you will see plenty of tractors, bulldozers, excavators, trucks, diesel stuff, welding, and repair videos. There's a wide array of equipment showcased, anything from John Deere, International, Farmall, Ford, Komatsu, and the list goes on. Andy drives a Dodge 12 valve Cummins diesel, Matt is currently in a big block Chevy (but that will probably change). If this seems like stuff you're interested in, check us out! We would love to hear from you in the comments or over on our Facebook and Instagram pages. To keep up with the latest projects make sure to subscribe and click the notification bell. Hit the "Like" button and let KZread know you're enjoying the content we produce. Those thumbs ups help other folks discover us and we appreciate it!

Thank you for explaining to people that the top bolt has to come off first , or it is going to bind because of the weight & moment arm of the starter.

Good to see someone trying to help the next generation!! Sadly, most really have no clue 😪 Growing up on the farm, I was driving tractor at 5, probably helping dad fix things before that. First starter change, I was probably about 6?-8?? Started welding at 12.... Things just aren't what they used to be.... And hey, Mr firefighter... Started that at a busy volunteer department at 18😎 stuck with it for 20 years, while Farming and Logging...... Now, I just farm and make KZread videos of it.. LOL

At 4:40 in the video, what is that black drain tube called just under and to the right of your hand? I had to remove mine to get the starter out as it was wedged tight by the bolt and of course it broke as it was so brittle. I need to get another but not sure what it is called. Thx. Great video

That is what’s commonly referred to as the “blow by” tube. It’s where crankcase vapors are discharged. It comes down that far to basically keep an oily buildup off of your engine which could be a potential fire hazard. In later models such as the 2001 I had, this tube empties into a canister that is supposed to be drained every oil change. The older 12 valves just discharged into open air. Thanks for the question!

You left the big starter wire hang, blocking the view of what you were doing....
