Replace a Printer Pickup Roller (Samsung ML2010, SCX4521, SFX4725 and others)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Misfeeds? Paper jams? Change the rubber pickup roller and your Samsung printer will feed paper like it was new! Same procedure on the ML2010, ML2570, ML2571, SCX4521, SCX4725, CLP350 and many others (see long list of models below).
TO BUY a pickup roller, go to eBay and search on "Pickup Roller For Use In Samsung ML1610 ML 1610 2010 2240". That's where I bought my pickup rollers. They are $6.60 for 1 complete belt and the core ($3.60 + $3 shipping). I actually bought 3, because each extra one only adds $1 in shipping to the bill (that made them $5.26 each, including shipping).
It ships from Florida (NOT China!), so it only takes a few days to arrive.
According to Samsung, the same roller belt fits the Samsung ML-1610, ML-2010, ML- 2240, SCX-4521f, CLP300, CLX3160FN, ML1610, ML1610R, ML1640, ML2010, ML2010R, ML2015, ML2240, ML2241, ML2245, SCX4321, SCX4521F, SCX4521FG.
The part number is JC73-00302A (for just the belt, which Samsung charges $8.95 for! And then Samsung adds on for shipping!!! eBay is a much better deal.

    In 2021 this video is still relevant! THANKS so much for making and posting your video. Getting those two tabs pulled out was definitely "challenging", but I would not have figured it out without seeing you do it! I ended up using a small blade screwdriver on both sides simultaneously to pry them OUT (horizontally). I could not seem to do it one side at a time. When I found the sweet spot, the roller came loose easily. Turning the tire inside-out revealed the inside surface was very smooth, so I didn't opt for that. I just stayed with the original exterior side and rotated it to orient the best surface at the pickup point. I used silicone waterproofing liquid to clean the tire (the rubber), which only had some minor cracks. It went back in quite easily. Worked great on first try and on all pages since. I may buy a spare tire on eBay for next time. This has been a remarkably reliable and economical printer until the feed jams started a year or two ago.

    Good for you! Many fixes work temporarily on the surface but the rejuvenator seems to actually make the rubber "young" again. I have extra rollers in the closet for if I ever need them down the road. Better to have one and not need it than to need one and have to wait weeks for a shipment.

    Thanks to your video I bought one from EBay (for $1+$3 shipping) - and due to 3-6 weeks shipping to Hungary, I "repaired" my original with a slight rubber shift AND an electrical tape to the rubber support (I measured: 0,1 mm worn away). Before I tried another "Just clean" video hint (which is easier) - and it worked for 5-6 feeds, but not more. So my 10-years-old ML1610 printer now reliably feeds paper again. I did not want to throw away, because I have extra toner for it and refill is VERY easy (no chip, etc). HP (who bough Samsung printing division) will make repairs life harder...

    Thank you very much for your comment! If one can wait, it is amazing how cheap a new roller can be. Or with paying for faster shipping, it's often pretty cheap to get 6 or 12 rollers instead of just one…essentially a lifetime supply. In my case it meant I was ready when any of my several printers needed a new roller. And thank you for alerting me to HP buying the Samsung printer division. I wonder what difference that will make to quality and prices.

    You are so right! Rotating the roller rubber around halfway is a great solution. If you use the rejuvenator once in a while, that newly exposed side will last much longer. it is great t feel in control of the only thing that has ever given me trouble on these printers over the last ten years! Also I like having an extra roller on hand for that fateful day when I know my roller will break at the worst possible moment and I don/t want to have to wait days for it to arrive.

    Hi Michelle, I'm glad flipping the rubber roller inside out worked for you. It all depends on how old and cracked the rubber is. I like having a new roller on hand for when the old one finally gives out. And once the old one is out for flipping, I figure why not put on a new one and get another 5 years of carefree use out of it.

    Thanks for the video on replacing the pick up roller. After watching the video I got to thinking. When I looked at the surface of the rubber on my roller it was dry and crinkly but i wondered what kind of shape the inside surface of the rubber was in. So I removed the pickup roller ( which was quite easy thanks to you) and removed the rubber. looking at the back side of the rubber it was sooth and shiny just like new. So after washing it with soap and water I turned it inside out and reinstalled it in the printer. Hallelujah it works like new. Just thought I would throw that out there as another alternative for solving it problem. Cost= $0.00

  • @shamankultmusic7889

    Thanks, that was just the help I needed! :-) I wedged two small jeweler's screwdrivers behind the roller tabs to keep them disengaged while pulling out the roller. Also it's easy to remove the entire front panel. When installing the new roller, there is a "false" click before it's all the way in. Push harder to get the second click. If the printer won't clear its error state, try removing and reinstalling the print head assembly, and open and fully close the top and front door panels.

  • @maximpulse

    Glad to be of help, Shaman! The main thing is folks get to see that any kind of tool can make this possible. I recall someone had long enough fingernails to do the trick! What is removing the "printer head assembly"? It sounds like a bit more involved. Another way to clear the printer is to go to the printer's control panel and find the print queue, pause it, wait a few seconds and then restart it. Alternatively sometimes turning it off, unplugging it, waiting and then plugging it back in can do the trick.

  • @maximpulse
    @maximpulse10 жыл бұрын

    Hi Richard, one more thought: another solution to a roller with a worn surface is to coat the rubber with a "rubber cleaner and rejuvenator". If one searches KZread for "Renew your printer pickup roller!", I have a video of how to do that, too. It actually costs more than a new rubber roller, but it's really quick and easy…it only takes a minute to do.

Seems like the rubber is too thick, even installing the original worn rubber doesnt work and hits the toner cartridge too. Not sure where i went wrong here. My roller was not picking up any sheet of paper anymore because it was pretty much baked by the heat, having strikes and small ruptures on the surface. I found that simply removing the rubber from the roller and turning it inside out (exposing the inside, now better surface) fixed the problem ;) I am pretty sure I won't get the same run from the reverse side of the rubber but it will definitely work until the new part comes in. While I don't see a problem wearing the rubber tire both sides, I strongly recommend against doing the same with clothing :D LOL.

    Quite right about reversing the rubber roller pad to reveal a new "grippy" surface. I did mention that in the video. You can also just slip the roller pad around, say, 90 or 180 degrees and use that portion of the roller. In my case the rubber was cracked so I replaced the entire pad. Since the rubber pad had lasted something like 8 years, I figured I may as well have a totally brand new start. I am itching to make a video where I take the cover off one of these days. Genius tip - to undo the two clips, cross your hands over and use the fingernail of your left forefinger to pull back the right clip, and the fingernail of your right forefinger to pull back the right clip, both at the same time. Easy peasy! Also there is often a part of the roller that is in better condition, so you can bring it round to the position where the roller is currently white from rubbing against 10 years of paper. Another video suggests turning the roller inside out.

    Good for you! These Samsung laser printers were incredibly well built. It would be a shame to have them fade due to these rollers pooping out. It was quite an adventure figuring out how to fit a tiny camera (an iPod back in 2013) inside the tight confines of the printer. It's pretty cool how useful the video has been. By the way, I have another video about applying a rubber rejuvenator periodically which is easy to apply and really works. kzread.info/dash/bejne/epqm08Zxg9zaiJs.html

    Nicely done. It appears that your technique would work with the ML 1610 as well...based on the roller, and install style. RE the different tabs on the roller: I think before I undo, I will mark lh rh, as the plastic part of the roller could easily go either way. (back to front, or front to back.

  • @maximpulse
    @maximpulse9 жыл бұрын

    Re: Johnny Tucats Sorry if you had trouble installing your roller. You can see in the video (around 4:00) that it doesn't take much effort at all to click the new roller back into place. It's darned awkward reaching in there, and you have to have the right little "knobs" or "projections" in the right little slots, but once you have lined it up correctly, it does click in pretty easily. If you had trouble I can only guess it was either upside down or the knobs weren't in their respective slots. I agree the square bar the roller goes onto isn't the sturdiest part ever made, but I have done this procedure several times and when lined up correctly, it doesn't require much strength or force to install. I recall once where I was frustrated and then realized I wasn't doing it right. I relaxed, watched my own video again, looked things over inside the printer and in it went. For anyone doing this procedure: if you feel you have to use a lot of strength, back off and re-examine the procedure…it doesn't require getting heavy-handed!

    I had 2 methods that works if the rubber portion of the roller is not broken/badly cracked. 1) Coat a layer of rubber cement to add more traction. 2) Add a layer of double sided tape on the plastic part which comes into contact with the rubber to increase thickness by 1mm.

  • @maximpulse

    @maximpulse

    9 жыл бұрын

    I looked at 1:57 and I'm not sure what you mean by the "cream band", but I try to answer anyway! I didn't get where I am today by letting ignorance stop me! All the cream colored parts are nylon plastic. Immediately under the black rubber belt is a cream colored nylon C-shaped part which the belt wraps around. Under that is a core which the C-shaped part clips onto. Behind those parts are a couple of "gripper fingers" (that's my term) that hold the paper against the black rubber belt as it turns. it could be that those gripper fingers are dirty and are smudging your prints. If it were me, I'd clean them off with a damp paper towel or makeup pad, let them dry and see if that helps. You can also try a little Windex on a pad/towel, just be sure to let things dry before printing a test.

  • @starkillermx

    maximpulse Many thanks maximpulse :), yep, excuse me if I didn't explain me jeje. Yes, I think that is a gripper fingers that help the C-shapped band to take the paper, it's too dirty, and the rubber band have the same cream-yellow tone that have the gripper band, I'll try to take a short video to explain me better :) Many Thansk again!

    +jmtexan77 It just occurred to me that the parts were not clicked back into their original position. If that were the case when the metal bar turns one or another part might be "left behind" and make noises. But you do say you are sure everything clicked back together. It is a pity it is so hard to see and reach back into the "cave"!

I don't have the part number handy, but you can go to my web page www.greendept.com/maximpulse/printer/index.html and scroll down to the section "Replacing Samsung Pickup Rollers" There's a link in that section where to buy the rollers for $3.60 + $3 shipping. I bought some myself for my ML-2010. The center plastic part seems like it is made of white nylon, so it is much stronger than you might think. Nylon can be bent pretty far and still spring back.

    Unfortunately for me, my pick-up roller housing is different than the one in your video. It's even different from the roller housing in the Samsung repair manual. Probably because my printer was manufactured in early 2007. So, if there are two white disk shaped pieces, one on either side of your pick-up roller, you may need to slide those white pieces away from the pick-up roller and then gently finesse the roller housing off the shaft. I don't think it is possible to to remove the roller from the housing without removing it from the shaft.
